Just hit the opponent without being hit. Pay attention to what you're doing that is leading to being hit and do less of it. Combos don't matter. They're just for you to do more damage with each opening you find, just do the most basic combo you can if you're dropping. Do anti-airs when you can. Don't lose your patience if the other guy is just running away. In some matches you'll guess wrong everytime, it happens. Good luck

If you can graduate from high school, you can play fighting games.
If you're not used to 3d fighting games, they can be hard to grasp at first in general. If anything, things not coming naturally to you makes a lot of sense, especially if you're used to how 2d games work instead.
VF5 is literally decades of legacy knowledge checks thrown at you all at once. That is why it is somewhat difficult to pick up.

You've probably already done the tutorial, but I highly recommend reading VFDC articles on your character and general play.

The big issue with VF is that the characters have so many moves, you're burdened with learning a complex matchup with 100 things thrown at you all at once. So if you're trying to fight in a tournament or online with many different characters, it will be difficult to learn since you're taking 10 different college courses in a row in a speed round test format.

I recommend learning with a friend if you have one. And having both of you focus on just one character if you're figuring it out. That way, you can at least become familiar with how to deal with one character, then eventually more of the game in general.

The thing about Virtua Fighter is that it has a large degree of esoteric knowledge. You need to understand various option selects that make the game less about guessing and ultimately causes defense to be more bearable.

For example, things like Fuzzy Guard allow you to defend against mids and throws all at once. So a situation that looks scary with a 50/50 might end up actually being fake because you can stop two things at once. A lot of confusing little situations like that which you can't learn from only watching match footage.

The problem is that fundamental knowledge is also important and you need to utilize and learn that on top of the esoteric knowledge. This is one of the things that makes VF harder for beginners.

It can be a little hard to grasp these concepts at first, but i you stick with it, watch/read guides, and then try to apply those things one at a time, you'll get better and better eventually. The only thing to understand in fighting games is:
Deplete the opponent's health meter to zero to kill him.
You can block high, you can block low, you can't block both ways, usually.
This applies to your opponent as well.
Look for gaps in his defense. If he's defending high, aim low, if he's defending low, aim high (do an overhead attack).
Mash buttons, figure out what your character's buttons do and what they're useful for, get a feel for them.
Throwing beats blocking so if you can't open them up use a throw.

this is my main problem with fightans, my brain does not compute fast enough during a match.
I'm good at everything requiring tech skill, combos, etc, i have good knowledge of my character and decent knowledge of matchups and i'm even a bit of a lab monster, i discovered a lot of things for my main that people still use BUT i suck absolute dicks at everything that actually involves the opponent.
Can't recognize and exploit habits, can't read their intentions, can't condition, actually can't even get conditioned cause i never suspect anything. My brain is simply not fast enough to recognize and formulate plans around something in real time. I can get the answer on my own still but i need a lot of time to think about it outside of the match.
