BF players didn't retire in droves from BF4 over to BF1 because the modern setting is simply more popular, and it was a pretty slow rollout for the expansions which honestly are where most fo the best stuff comes from. This is unironically one of the worst fps games I've played. It doesn't reward aim at all. Every single lobby I have almost better aim than everyone I run into but since they're already just chilling and waiting for someone to run into their crosshairs you just die before you can even react half the time. Its because 4's system sucks. Carbines are almost so close to AR's that you aren't going to be sad to not be able to use ARs, LMGs or SMGs. Most snipers use Recon for the perk anyway too.
