It wasn't an expansion league that's 3.27. A large part of returning players rely on a consistent cycle of updates. That's yhe entire reason they chose the 3 month cycle. Long enough you don't get burnt out. But short enough that your attention doesn't get diverted elsewhere. Poe spent the last several years stagnating because they poached devs and released subpar leagues so they could make poe2. After that massive delay, and realizing poe2 wasn't going to have what they wanted, I imagine a lot of people quit outright. Poe2 couldn't replace 1 and it appears that 1 is being slowly phased out and no longer getting the love it used to have. We should have had an end game rework like 2 yrs ago so most people are burnt out and there's no light at the end of the tunnel

one thing that bothers me in poe2 is that they have these cool ascendancy nodes that proc different cool things or can be interacted with like stormweaver elemental storms, invoker's avatar, weapon smithing, animate weapon etc. many examples but they're all weak as fuck and they don't even look cool.
invoker's avatar is just tree red blue white orbs around him with you activate it and that's it. the fuck is that. for a game that tries really hard to look cool it has some underwhelming shit ascendancies.

The "problem" if there is one is that they balance the game around you needing high raw HP to not get instantly raped by some things and losing your map/boss but they failed to provide any ways to actually get that raw HP other than ES. Sure 5% life isn't interesting but neither are minor or travel nodes, yet they still offer you a choice of scaling your character in a way that allows content to be more forgiving at the cost of doing it slowly if you don't have the gear to do it fast. ES completely gets rid of that as it's basically more raw HP anyway and is so easy to scale that it fundamentally replaced life nodes for any build on the top side of the tree. I agree notables need to be more interesting, like that cool chaos notable that gives you +1 level but -10 chaos res, but I don't think there's much room to make notables like that. Yeah I fully agree, I feel like they invented a problem, their solution caused other problems, and now they have to go around putting out the fires it caused.

You know, ironically, I don't think it's warrior/merc armor builds that are really suffering because of this, they mostly end up stacking a lot of str. But for mercs going right and rangers, it can be really rough to build pool without life on the tree. You have to go into ES and then you're potentially juggling some pretty rough attribute reqs as a result of that, while also being forced north on the tree.
Ah well. I think it's safe to say we'll see a lot of tree changes in the future and that the current tree will eventually be unrecognizable. Maybe it pans out ok. I have some optimism because of how they handled fixing certain issues in POE1 (melee buff, aura/defenses rebalance, caster buffs in Mercs are a step in the right direction). Not perfect but progress can be seen.
