Danny couldn't stand how often byuu would come up with a framework or API and build a whole ecosystem around it, only to drop it and reinvent the wheel for the umpteenth time. Recall that byuu is the one who came up with libsnes, which is what evolved into libretro. He also wrote the Phoenix UI that SSNES and later RetroArch used, and also came up with the original XML .shader format. He ended up abandoning all of them and replaced them with others, which is what led to higan (later dropped in favor of ares) and the quark shader format (which has now been deprecated in ares in favor of RetroArch's own .slang shaders through librashader). The point is Danny didn't like this aspect of byuu and others, and being his usual caustic self, he talked a whole lot of shit about him in just about every corner of the internet, and byuu obviously didn't appreciate that one bit.

I always thought it was weird that ares had a different format. Was there anything better about it or did byuu just want to use something different just because?

Byuu was infamous for this kind of thing. Instead of taking something that already worked, he'd just create his own thing that had the same function, but with his own twist that for whatever reason he felt made it better. Danny often accused him of having NIH (Not Invented Here) Syndrome for this reason. As for the quark shader format, I truthfully never looked into it or what advantages it had, but I suspect that while the old XML format was indeed very limited, he didn't want to adopt what libretro were doing because of grudges he had with them, so he just made his own again. It never got widespread acceptance, though.

Anyway, today I got Monster Hunter World with the Cmod fork of Winlator running 30FPS on a Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 / 16GB RAM (Odin 2 Max). Low settings obviously, but no graphical issues after some tinkering. It's actually playable. It's really crazy how far PC emulation /translation layers has come.

Honestly the Jap text lends its own vibe to it in a way, and you can use RA's pretty-decent OCR in combination with a vgtranslate account to limp through it. As for the supposed differences and difficulty, it's not as crazy as the guy in the last thread memed. It's pretty much good ol System Shock with a PC98 FM music option.

(cont.) it's also nice that the game keeps the 640x400 HUD and text even when you select 320x200/400 for the in-game rendering. It was smart to keep the Japanese text legible while giving you the option to reduce CPU load. It's pretty playable at 320x400 in my guest.

There are two versions. First one heavily dropped the ball and was quite bad because it didn't adhere to the source manga, so Eat-Man '98 is it's technical remake/reboot that's way more faithful, even though it has some sequel'esque elements in it. It's like comparing 90's Hunter X Hunter to 2011's remake. As for comparison with Trigun - Eat-Man '98 always BTFO'd Trigun. Trigun was never good.
It's nothing like Outlaw Star, however.

It's crazy to see how quickly Xemu is catching up to PCSX2 in terms of compatibility and hardware feature support. It's still lagging behind in certain enhancement capabilities though...
PCSX2 has z-buffer, FPU and other issues that need to be handled. Emulator's own GS renderer has improved a lot recently, and soft-bloat and parallel-gs seem promising. A lot of hacks also need to be removed from the gameDB... There are some audio issues as well (e.g, True Crime NYC)

Included are RGB, svideo that's blurry enough for mesh dithering, and a couple undither algo + RGB shaders. These are meant for Retroarch, place these in your /shaders/ folder and make sure to update your slangp shaders within RA. These will also work w/ ShaderGlass and Ares.

I did just find one that lets you unlock the draw distance (basically PS4) which is pretty cool

Try convincing Mad World to be a normal gamepad game. I got it close but some of the QTE actions felt a little janky and unwieldy. Shocked no one's made a non-wagglan mod for that, or Platinum never shat out a "remaster" for Switch.

I just grabbed the .asi and ini from there and grabbed a d3d9.dll from the "ultimate asi loader" github page because I don't fully trust the one given there and it's too big to completely dissect. The .asi file itself I examined under ghidra and it seems safe.
You can edit the ini to change like render distance and resolution and stuff.

Played it some more and the limitations of GBstudio and/or the dev do show in a few ways, and it has some questionable deviations from the original:
>SMB3 bounce and shell/jump chain 1ups trivialize things a bit
>hammer bros don't throw nearly as many hammers and aren't as tricky to deal with overall
>fire sticks animate poorly
Still more enjoyable to play than Super Myopia Bros, and the second quest is interesting enough.

Mini LEDs are done for. Only Micro RGB now, for proper and better-than-CRT output. Don't forget that it needs to be at least an 8K panel. 4K won't do. It starts at 8K minimum.

nah nothing is wrong. i just tried to chd god of war 2. shinobi, a 1.3gb game still made this 8gb laptop swap 4kb. now this is a normal swap, this is a zswap so its compress ram but to a degree because it will swap to disk at some point and i dont know what that point is. the system freezed at 18-20% and it went like that for a few minutes until the kernel unfucked itself and gave me a warning that the kernel was fucked up so i restarted the system. when i checked the chd file or whatever of god of war 2 it was 1.6gb in size so i threw it to the trash as theres no way it would compress it to that extent. i mean i dont know anything about this but i am 100% sure thats broken compression job. i had over 300mb in swap and i sure it was way more thaan that while the system froze.
chatgpt told me to use lz4 or something because it uses less resources but i dont trust chatgpt.

Lzma was the original compression format of chdman, zstandard had been added later (which caused some problems since not all the emulators were compatible with it at first). So, trying Lzma could work.
Also, Linux, like, maybe you got problem because you're on Linux.

Because MQ isn't on N64 and trying to emulate it on N64 emulator is buggy and crashes before the end credit video. It's the official higher res version with GameCube prompts and shit which is kinda interesting
>I'd just play the PC port nowadays desu, it has MQ and tons of QoL features.
The PC port is unironically the "doesn't feel right on PC" meme for me, I don't like that arbtirary "Ship of Harkinian" label, that you probably have to be in some Discord to 100% keep up with stuff, that all kinds of cheats are just a click away and that it's probably too tempting to constantly tinker with shit and spend more time optimizing the experience than just playing the game - OoT is a game where I really don't want that. Normally I'd just play it on Retroarch with shaders, especially since the pre-rendered backgrounds look bad and were never intended to be seen at high res and without any kind of CRT mask
Just wondering if the pause delay is also in the official GC game played on a GC (Chat GPT says it is but this sadly doesn't mean shit) and/or if there is an easy fix to get rid of it in Dolphin

That was honestly it's biggest problem for a long time. I think it's a bit laggier than Ymir and Beetle/Med too. It's much, much better than Yabause & forks, and people slept on it for years because they didn't know how to find the ISOs, mount them, or otherwise get it to work.

Actually this is a problem even on modern emulators. The credits cutscenes desyncs from the audio even on emulators like Ares. N64 timings still haven't been solved for the moment

Of course it is! You need it if you have any sort of discerning taste in how you emulate old games, though. I don't really find it buggy/ugly so much, that's up to taste and you can change how it looks a lot, it's just baroque and full of quirks in how you have to do things.
Turbo binding needs a TED talk to explain, learning how default retroarch.cfg, per-game/core configs .opts, and override cfgs work simply takes experience. Want to bind a core's B button to multiple buttons on your controller, especially if you want one turbo'd and one not? You're making a RetroPad/retroarch.cfg override for that game/core.

You're already playing it the 'best' way, then. Nothing about mouse tweaking on pcgw so you probably have to account for it the best you can via external mouse settings. See how binding mouse to joypad works in the console versions. Probably works just as well as that 3rd world port's native mouse support. Sadly the PCSX2 mouse injector doesn't support it. The game was meant to be played with a gamepad anyway.

That's not the HD Project, that's the vanilla UHD release. The textures Capcom used are trash, they just ran them through some early AI upscaler. HD Project is actually based on the GC textures.
Pic related, 2022 is HD Project.
I recommend giving it a try if you haven't already, dude dedicated almost a decade into getting it just right. Everything was remade by hand, he even traveled to some places in Spain where Capcom devs took reference pics for textures to take better ones.

"Dragon's Lair required stacking captures from seven different discs due to wear and tear."
Even with lossless FLAC compression, this contributes to a significant file size.

I see. Well, like I said I think somehow these dumps will get smarter/smaller. We have the technology and use it to make things fit on this stupid board all the time. Granted that's to an extreme extent and does have a cost, but there are definitely ways to encode that look lossless or are lossless with much smaller sizes.

I noticed from using my real N64 that emulators (PJ64 3.0 and ParaLLEl Launcher), using a real N64 controller with an adapter and on 100% range, are just ever so slightly more sensitive with a shorter range than the controllers on actual console.
Is this an issue with emulators or maybe my adapter? (using a Mayflash adapter) Or do I just have the setting wrong?

Holy shit! All you need to do is replace "mod" with "emu" and "Arthmoor" with "stenzek", and it really is just a video about Duckstation.
So I just realized why Ares of all things has ParaLLEl-RDP, but mainline PCSX2 still doesn't have ParaLLEl-GS yet. Near was THE creator of libsnes, which ended up becoming libretro. (Probably not news to most /emugen/ regulars, but it's certainly a shock to me.) However, I still don't understand why the main PCSX2 team is hesitant on adding an extra option that could work better for some games.

It's by far the best RDP renderer in terms of an accuracy to performance ratio and it's not even fucking close, plus its license is very permissive, so you'd have to be a proud, stubborn retard to refuse to use it, which explains why the PCSX2 devs won't use ParaLLEl-GS.

I really don't think it's about that. Mupen (and its frontends/cores) and Project64 are more modular in design and their development culture is more open to things like Parallel and plugins getting added. If one's creating a new N64 emu, as Ares relatively is, one knows it's either some shitty HLE hackjob or miserable slow-ass Angrylion otherwise, so Parallel is the obvious choice. I don't think it's Byuu/libretro politics at all.
PCSX2 is a very deliberate thing these days with hands-on and anal administration and isn't very modular post-Stenzification. It's also an old sloppy mess and they aren't in a hurry to deal with a new renderer's incompatibilities and quirks with it. I've ctrl-f'd in discord recently and one of the devs (I think) said it would simply be a lot of work. We'll probably see it some year, but not this one.

Steam has a feature called Remote Play Together that lets you play any game that has local multiplayer online by basically streaming the game at a very low latency to the other person and receiving their controller inputs. It doesn't work with non-Steam games but luckily, Retroarch has an official Steam version that supports it:
https://store.steampowered.com/app/1118310/RetroArch/
This is really convenient if your friend isn't great at tech stuff like setting up emulators and shit because all he needs to do is have a controller plugged in and accept your invite on Steam

PGS is really demanding, you can easily stress a 3060 (laptop though) on a full 3D game if you max out SSAA and such. At native though, maybe it could work, maybe. Also, Vulkan support is crucial of course.

With the current stable release you need to use one of the managers listed on the front page of their website (pic related)
The latest nightly has their new built-in manager but you need to start 86box with some launch argument to use it, probably because it's not 100% ready yet
The next stable release that's coming out August 24 is going to have the built in manager

So the OoT "PC port" needs a rom so I pick the 1.1 version because it doesn't have the 1.2 censorship. Shouldnt the game now be uncensored or do I still have to go through the options and individually tick the boxes like "red b lood"? Also I think there isn't even a box for the uncensored fire temple music so I hope it just has it because I picked 1.1.

In my experience, at least up until pretty recently, RA doesn't just work that way. You have to associate extensions in a very elaborate way, like linking to a batch that loads a certain core, etc. RA will not just take .nes or .md or whatever and select the right core via extension association. Has this changed recently or are you doing something fancy? The best I've been able to do is dragging a ROM into an open RA session, which then prompts to a core. There's also this too:

It's crazy how undiscerning or uncaring these remaster devs are. I spend lots of time calibrating my display and shaders so the colors and shit are right. These people must not even bother to do a side by side of color temperature/lighting or anything. Here I am doing shit IT-work when I could probably be doing much better for the world if I were on one of these teams. I'm sure I'm too much of an undereducated (on paper) chud, though.

Still capped at 30. It seems Eden's cheat parser is broken; most games' 60 fps mods work just fine because they are "real mods" with efex folder and stuff but, for some reason, MHGU's is a simple cheat.
Is there an actual mod for MHGU that uncaps the fps like for every other game? Otherwise I guess Eden breaks the most important Switch game.

No. DS is 66mhz and he says that setting halves it. What's likely going on is some bus/memory speed is being emulated faster than anticipated. The CPU is running at the right frequency by default, that setting halves it to 33mhz. It probably has a knock-on effect of running whatever thingy that homebrew relies on at the expected speed. So, yes, it's doing something too fast, but I think the CPU is technically at the right frequency.

If it's somewhat yuge like DOS and DS, I start scripting to remove duplicates, slightly different dumps, regions I know I'll never need, demos, protos, etc. For optical disc systems I just download as I need them and pray myrient and archive never ack.

For the rest, look like a whole bunch of speedhack, so, leave all this to default unless your games run like shit, then start fiddling with.

There is an easy drag and drop 60 fps cheat for nearly every Switch game why can't I find one for TotK which is its most hyped up game? I only find some weird tools with a bunch of features I don't care about and people complaining that their 60 fps mods don't work with certain updates?
Does anyone here have a link to a simple 60 fps mod/cheat for TotK and can tell me what update the game needs?
A full list with all the mods would be cool. This seems to be outdated:

Make sure whatever full screen mode you're using is using HW/legacy/independent flip. GPU copy modes are laggy. Also make sure you're using a >60hz mode, especially if you have a VRR monitor. This will give you proper VRR instead laggy vsync to pace frames. Also make sure optimum frame pacing is selected in PCSX2 which cuts as many frames of latency possible. Run-ahead would be nice but probably a bridge too far for 6th gen.

What's the rationale for this again, beyond making automatic configuration of pads easier?
>>535744703
The automated pad configuration is nice, what isn't so nice is how you can't just go into the per-core control configs and say: "motherfucker I want this in-game key/button to the this real-life key/button" with a prompt that accepts any key/button from any device, like you can in MAME. You have to flip back to Retropad's base universal settings and change it there, then save a game/core config. Eldritch nightmare.

Yeah, I've been there. Now, for most cores you usually don't have to change anything, but for N64, Saturn, and other systems with non-SNES/PSX-derived layouts, easy button remapping is absolutely a necessity if you're using a pad conforming to such a layout i.e. the vast majority of controllers. I still remember the absolute headache I incurred upon myself just trying to get Perfect Dark to work with dual-analog controls.

thanks for the link m8 but that part of the overlay doesn't seem to work for me, I must be missing some of the dependencies/data provider you're using. But I doubt I'm running a suboptimal flip mode anyway, I choose 60hz at 4K yet in fullscreen the display is still running 120hz..
They just need to improve their shit. Even 60hz with lowlag vsync is perfectly fine on a properly coded game or emu, I'm even doing the reflex trick and it's still not quite good enough. I feel like the emu just has one too many frame of inherent lag. Using VRR to disable vsync is a cope in my opinion, the PS2 was using vsync with no lag, and since I'm using the lowlag vsync trick it wouldn't improve much anyway (after all I tried disabling vsync entirely, confirmed seeing tearing, and it's still laggy basically the same way)
But as I'm writing this I tried updating and wow an exclusive fullscreen option has just been added in the advanced option! I try it right away

Ah hell I had another one that seemed to work for someone else. Oh well, basically I took one of the RTSS presets and edited it. I think the VRR/reflex one has all the important information, just too much of it so I cut some off.

You do actually want that 120hz mode, so that's a good thing, however, it's important that it's exclusive/flip and actually using VRR. RTSS is good for seeing if it's on by detecting that fluctuating refresh rate.

Pretty much. The UX could be a lot better but RA is still preferable to most standalones because you get have things like proper VRR support and good image scaling across all cores

>"motherfucker I want this in-game key/button to the this real-life key/button"
Probably my biggest problem with RA but I've learned to live with it

Is there any sensible UI for MAME?
>windows gui based
>simple hierarchial list, no bullshit
>no extra things whatsoever
It's been a while since I last owned full romset and using default MAME UI is impossible.
Okay, another thing would be to just manually select few roms and make a another directory, this would be the easiest way I guess.

Thanks, was looking at some stuff but so many of them have been discontinued. Did test out QMC2 and while that one looks superficially ok it still had issues and features I didn't like.

Actually, come to think of it, BizHawk can load libretro cores, and it doesn't use a retropad, does it? If so, then the retropad system isn't necessary for libretro cores to function, so it'd be squarely a RetroArch issue.

Okay, so - after getting MAME 0.279 roms off Archive.org I only now realized that "Archive.org does not generate torrents larger than 75 GB, use jdownloader or something to download the individual files".
Basically torrent is 55GB and the full size would be 85GB.
Jesus fucking Christ I guess I'll just say fuck off for now. This is so useless. Not going to install some retarded JAVA downloaded for that matter.

Wait, never heard of them - going to check them out. Archive.org was the low hanging fruit.
I still think that getting the full set is probably not a good idea, because it's better to pick out the games you are interested in and curate a personal collection instead.
But then again, who knows when all of these are going offline lel. If download them all now I can backup them forever..

Today's your lucky day, because that site offers direct download links to individual games. (Along with different options like split, merged, and standalone.

The first game was pure braindead trash that you could play with literally one button and this looks hardly better
I bet /v/ is glazing this right now just because it has semi decent graphics and candy colors. And you get this instead of a new F-Zero or Smash Bros. Really makes you hate tendies sometimes
