My Kazusa...

Just read all three Famicom Detective Clubs. The first one is pretty weak but the second and third are quite good mystery VNs, and it's wild they made a direct sequel all this time later. The Girl Who Stands Behind is a really good mystery and The Smiling Man isn't as strong a mystery (there's only one plausible candidate), but the actual story is quite good and the 25 minute fully animated epilogue OVA is incredible. Now I understand why Ayumi Tachibana was the top visual novel girl of the 80s. Read them if you have any interest in mysteries and don't mind a little 80s jank.
The scene where Ayumi's being held hostage and the hostage-taker demands you quit investigating the mystery or else he'll kill her and the only way to progress is to literally quit the game (so you 'quit' solving the mystery) is 10/10. That's some wild shit for 1989.

I also played GIKEI, I'm a big fan of both Chuushingura and Miburo, I enjoyed my time with it. My biggest problem was how they made main girl's personality encyclopedia to explain heian stuff and I thought she was boring as shit. They should have just done the same as miburo and added マメ知識 section instead or something. Also, on the first look it seems like their sprite work improved compared to previous works, but then they got lazy and it's actually worse. And, of course, no sex with tigers is the biggest sin... But it's still a worthwhile read if you're into jidaigeki

I didn't mind the Rokopedia, I read these VNs for historical info dumping. But yes, they picked the two worst girls to be the heroines and every girl from the past was better than the modern girls. Benkei in particular pissed me off, why the fuck is Benkei not a heroine in a Yoshitsune VN? What the fuck are you doing? It's especially bad because after the arc with her mom is over she has nothing to do but fight and say 'onzoushi please fuck me' for 95% of the VN.
But I really don't hold it against them much, because I truly do believe something went horribly wrong and they had to make serious cuts. The fact that the second route ends abruptly out of nowhere with the villain showing up and shooting MC in the head or the true route final figghts against the demon girls gang are super short and feel like they ran out of money. They introduce a group of evil demon girls that have personalities and weapons to match the heroines, and then the heroines fight them and initially lose, and they set things up for a final rematch battle, and then the final battle is <100 lines. What the fuck happened? Also the villain is Kurama Tengu, except he's not he's Taira no Masakado, except he's not he's a third guy and I don't even remember what the third reveal he was.
It feels like they ran out of money/time and had to finish it with what they had.

Fuck gikei and covid was not even a thing yet when it was developed. Inre got lazy, plain and simple.

Just finished the Mare afterstory. If we're gonna be completely honest here, her romance has been completely overshadowed by all of the plot that happened in other routes. I personally don't mind however, I prefer this since I was pretty curious about some of the subplots that were happening in the story. H-scenes lacked dolphins but I was skipping through it with breakneck speeds because even though Mare had mellowed out as a tsun (a little), I still never liked her from the beginning, and this sentiment isn't going to change anytime soon.
I checked the game, there's now 5 short stories for each of the other heroines. I'm going to do them all before finishing this fine meal with Yume as my last course.
