Around 100 games release on Steam alone EACH DAY.
About 700 games in the week around your release.
AAA release? Successful release AAA or indie, in your genre? BOOM you are done.
Also, not only are you competing with other new releases, but the entire backlog of games on every system a player owns. :)
Take all the "indie success stories" you can think of in the past 10 years and divide it by the number of devs in that time who have tried (again, 100 games a day, 3000 a month) and there's your historical likelihood of "making it."
Steam cut, higher self-employment taxes, no benefits, no retirement, AND to top it all off: Your sales diminish over time, so even if you hit this "mediocrity lottery" you'll have to do it all over again in a couple years.

Anyone else notice the new Steam widget "The Community Recommends"? Gabe caved to /v/tard incels. It's over. The gamedev meritocracy has fallen.
>upload game on itch
>spend the whole day ready for quick fixes and bug reports
>1 week passes, not a single view or sale
>wtf is going on
>find out that they didn't index my game
>go on forums and ask what's up
>get told it can take entire months for new accounts to get approved
Yeah no wonder Steam is a "monopoly", everyone else is too fucking retarded. At least Steam had the decency to "check" my game *before* I published it, so I didn't waste time in this limbo where I have to check every day if my game got indexed, and it didn't mess up my release schedule. When I set the release date on Steam it was actually released at that time and date, and I was prepared to respond to bug reports and do fixes for that day. With itch my game is just gonna pop up in existence at a random day and hour while I'm probably asleep. Fuck these cunts, I was gonna give them 30% like on Steam but they don't deserve it, I'm going back to 10% minimum possible.
I finally figured out what the fantasy game would have in terms of combat.
I'd be shitty and do paper mario action command combat, i hate jrpgs in general and would want combat to be actually engaging.
Also the horror game i pitched last thread i wouldnt mind doing a topdown one.

>>534781976https://itch.io/docs/creators/getting-indexed
At the very least they are manually "approving" whether the project should be indexed or not.
The page is up of course and if I link it to someone, he can access it. But they can't find my project if they search for it on itch's search bar, or google. Their "getting indexed" page says it only takes a day or two which is why I waited a full week for good measure, but on the forums someone told me it can take months.
>>534773391Getting old is fucking scary. None of my friends have grandparents. At my age my dad had 3 kids and a dog. But I have a couple game jam itch games so I'd say I'm about even now.
Do I need to play games to become a good game dev? I hate playing games. I haven't played a real game since 2019. :(
How do you make something feel rewarding for the player to achieve?
>>534781645>>1 week passes, not a single view or sale
itch has always been fucking shit. my free jam games will get 2 - 3 views and plays on itch and then hundreds or thousands on newgrounds if it gets a front page. I don't know how people were ever successful cold posting on itch. There's too much competition and zero "discovery."
Ohnononono Aggy what is your defense?
>>534783801>wishlists statsYeah, this guy doesn't know what he's fucking talking about.
>>534783480>Do I need to play games to become a good game dev? I hate playing games. I haven't played a real game since 2019. :(I think yes, but also no. I think if you're not going to play games you should at least do jams and competitions or post demos for feedback. That way you at least know what people like or hate about your games. You see games released all the time with shit controls or confusing gameplay because the solo devs built in a fucking silo without any play testing. If you play the type of games you want to make you probably already know what works and what doesn't. Playing new games doesn't matter. No one has made a good original game in decades.
>>534783649I don't bother playing games on itch or looking for them. The vast majority of itch crap is complete and utter garbage made by children or low functioning autists with no skills. If I download a game from itch it's because I found it somewhere else like X, YouTubers, or here. Videos of gameplay are the only thing I give any shits about. It's shocking to me how many itch games don't even have video of much less screenshots of their game.
>>534783480even retro games?
or some modern indies?
There's good games out there still.
Arcade games and off the wall genres I never thought I'd like have been great inspirations for mechanics and aesthetics. Try playing a wide swath of games you'd never think to play normally.
If nothing inspires you , you may just be depressed, which tracks worse with ngmi than not liking games. Successful non-game-enjoyer devs are usually inspired by real world experiences and try to put that fantasy in game form. If you don't enjoy games, don't have a real world inspiration, and aren't graced with a good idea from the Muses, then you may want to try another hobby.
>>534783801>publishersthere's only a very small handful of publishers I would even consider and quite frankly I'd rather not have one at all as I would much rather create a publishing studio if I found success.
>>534784154>then you may want to try another hobby.I recently started reading. Might try my hand at writing as well. Are visual novels even games? I might try making one.
>>534783480No. Kojima is entirely a dude who just makes whatever he feels like and because he knows what goes into a good game, it works.
>>534782162>You can get away with uploading literal malware until enough people report you for it.You can literally do the same on Steam if you don't activate the malware immediately.
What is the currency of your game called?
What the fuck? How is it that when an anti-AI twitter artist uses AI for music, everybody says "oh we understand, oh it's fine, keep making the game you want", but when I use AI for voice, people freak out and lose their shit? What the fuck!
>>534782162Wrong moron. You get flagged almost right away because itch does check the file as you upload it for obvious clues. Now if your game is less suspicious then yes, it will pass. There have been devs here who get flagged and have to message support to approve their game.
How do I translate my Steam page? What's a good machine translation thing to use?
>>534784815How long have you been doing this for bro? At least last year right? And every day? You'd have made a game by now if you spent that time on it.
>>534784918Pick any AI of your choice. We don't do that machine translation anymore in 2025.
>>534783480No, but it probably helps. If you've played a bunch in the past then surely that still helps.
>>534783480If you don't have some favorite games then I'd say why make games? Go do a medium you actually like
But if you have some favorites but don't enjoy most stuff out right now then yeah sure
>>534784957Okay, name an AI. You think I ever used one to generate art?

>>534805391None of the. You need to punish your AI for creating these
>>534787440that's crazy. he never ever talks about this game or about being a developer himself.
I think AI art and AI code are good enough for a prototype.
In the sense is much better to have a playable prototype of your idea you can test, instead of wasting more than a weekend on it.
I was able to get to a playable state my chicuelas 256 game in like 4-5 days.
And that's 100% amazing because I have a playable version I can show to others instead of being random ideas in my mind.
Familiarizing myself with lighting in Godot. I notice a directional light I have above the scene is causing leakage through mesh intersections (even with significant overlap) after a certain distance from my camera. Anyone familiar with this?
>>534805929He mentioned he worked on games in some blog posts. This one is the one he worked on, also - https://store.steampowered.com/app/791180/1_Screen_Platformer/

>>534805567yeah he was also active during ror he would post agdg builds based on thread feedback using mediafire links iirc, but deadbolt had him posting a lot even small stuff like animations and such

>>534806349you could try messing with the shadow bias
Do you like my pointy sword
>>534806349>>534806819The meshes are overlapping. That said, making the ceiling meshes thicker does help. Making the wall meshes thicker does not help. I'm guessing that's because the directional light here is casting the ceiling and not the walls.
Will continue messing with camera/shadow settings like other anons said, if only to understand it better

Maybe make it less on the nose, make it truly sci-fi with the "scout" literally removing the memories or creativity from the people's mind with a tool, making them forget what they actually liked and loved.

>>534808573They don't get finished solo unless you're a turbo-autist. Needs a team due to the amount of art and scripting. I had a team and we still cancelled
>>534806349>>534806819shadows have a bias to avoid shading the object that's casting the shadow. without the bias you get big moire patterns on the lit side of the object so you can't just reduce the bias to zero. the bias is effectively the minimum thickness of walls and ceilings for your project. any thinner objects will get the problem you screenshotted.
>>534810223>Kinnikuman dungeon beat-em up
>>534810307its not really a game, skinnerbox with dangling keys
we already know that its a working formula but you still need luck because 10 of those release daily and all of them could either become balatroon tier or have 5 reviews
>>534810307I made all my small games in the 90s and 2000s. I'm a big boy now making big boy games.
>>534810479>moire patternsGood to know. I was able to make those come up but didn't understand why. Are there any rules of thumb for bias settings or do you just need to take your scene into account (e.g. longest draw distance, mesh thicknesses) and tinker until it looks acceptable?

>>534810920stop ban evading
>>534810279I want a mention in the credits for repeatedly posting that I hate you and think your game is stupid and gay and retarded
>>534810497Not really. It's not even in the same genre as Balatro. It's closer to a narrative puzzle game with little-to-no replayability.
>>534810872this sort of thing will be very engine-specific as it depends on the accuracy of the z-buffer. I don't use godot or when I tried it I didn't pay attention to how it handles shadows.
generally speaking the ratio of near to far clip plane should affect the z accuracy. at least it does in Unity. so if you can push the near clip plane further out (not a first person game) that lets you use a lower bias. same if you're making a silent hill like, drag that far clip plane as close as possible to maximize not just performance but accuracy of depth values. again, this is how it works in Unity. I can only speculate that Godot handles the depth buffer similarly.
>>534811045>stop ban evading
>>534810279I gave really good feedback, I'm not a "people"...
I'll chalk it up to ESL not understanding the nuance.
I made a steam creator page but it somehow ended up in the namespace "curator" while I see everyone else having "developer" or "publisher".
What's going on here?
>>534811260Unfortunately I'm testing and intend to use first-person... I did test, though, and ignoring the obvious issue it did help a little. Reducing my far clip plane (which defaults to 4000 meters) also helped but in a non-linear, non-obvious way. I think I just need to do some proper learning about this shit, especially in the context of Godot (which I assume will be the most limited)
>>534786016This is only my account and it isn't proof of anything, but I started with 0 marketing experience, knowing 0 people in the medium. I followed Chris Z's advice and I'm nearing 4k wishlists in a few months. Even then most of his advice is the minimum bar you require to get visibility, you still need to make a good game, bad games may get some wishlists, some reviews and some sales but if no one knows about your game then steam isn't going to give you free visibility aside from your launch and then it would get quickly burried because your steam page is shit, your tags are wrong, your capsule looks bad, which means anything you do gets multplied by 0. I'm definitely less clueless from checking his stuff out. Now will I make it? I dunno, but knowing is half the battle.
>has any single person ever followed his advice and had success?A lot of indies and small studios have been following his advice in the last few years and some have had good sales whether it is because they would have made it anyway or because they apply good marketing I can't say but most (99%) of his advice is free.

>>534817428Well I am, and essentially what I am trying to do is make it so that this system gives every NPC a personality profile, current mood, and web of relationships, then runs them through simple, rule-based checks every few seconds. NPCs react to the player, each other, and timed events based on traits and whatโs happening around them. The closer they are to the player, the more detailed their behavior; farther away, they run in lighter simulation to save performance. Everything, dialogue, actions, and gossip, comes from a shared pool of rules and flags, so interactions feel natural and varied without heavy scripting.

>>534830390I do not think this is about being an ideaguy. Azuredevs talents are on full display for anyone who have played his games, Its art and characters, both of which have been good shit. His faults is creating complex gameplay system which are poorly conveyed. He should make something really simple, but sexy as fuck. Not a complex gundam game or anything tactical. He should make something where his art can shine, and his character sensibilities, but where the gameplay is extremely simple and the menus are large.
He is talented as fuck, but so far, he has not been able to use this properly. If I am wrong, I am wrong.

progress: finished a tutorial atleast. took 4 days.
>>534832254For sure, but then I do not know if he actually reads it or not. And a back and forth is good for all creators I think.
As for Azurdev: clearly an artistic talent, clearly good at creating visuals for characters. Imagery for spacegame is mostly wonderful. Spaceshit is so beautiful it hurts. Artwise, needs to polish individual images.
My guy has good ideas for stories, but no clue on how to get these ideas into the head of players.
Gameplay: Has suffered from the same problem in both of his games.
Its too inaccessible and hard to understand.
At the same time, how he adjusts the visuals according to the gameplay is great.
But... this does not matter if no one can get it.
I would say, make something very simple. with sexy graphics, and very big and obvious cues.

If there are fewer people around the limited resources on this Earth go further and everyone will have more money to spend.
If every family has 1 kid instead of 2 that kid gets double inheritance and the average person gets vastly richer very quickly.
Then instead of $9.99 you can price your game at $40 and sell because people actually have money to buy your stuff.

>>534832254Don't listen to that loser. You have decent technical skills especially in programming, but are still very weak in all design categories, including visual, character, narrative, and especially game design. You are still quintessentially a kenyan helicopter developer. You add things to your game because you think something is cool or you see that thing in other games and slap it onto your game without really thinking about why it's in those games.
IMO, you need to think harder about design. Why exactly are you adding specific systems to your game? How do you teach those systems to your players? What are do you want your players to think and feel at any given moment?
>>534777662BTW, that yellow warning might be the problem.

I need to find a good uniform for the kids...
Not digging how Unity has a bunch of redundant mechanisms for the rendering order of materials. I figure you should be able to get a quad to render in front by adjusting its position in the render queue but no such luck. The default material that 3d objects use doesn't even have a render queue override in the inspector. I may have to write *gulp* shader code. I don't like how there's a bunch of seemingly redundant material types as well.
>>534838887You forgot your diaper dinosaur
>>534839005what you need is the depth test, not just the render queue. yes, you need to render the thing last so nothing else draws over it. but you also need it to render "always" when every standard material only renders if the fragment depth is "less than" or "less than or equal". if you only adjust the render queue it will render last but then not render in front of other stuff because it would still depth test and conclude it's hidden behind something else.
>I may have to write *gulp* shader code. only if you're using a really old version of Unity. newer versions have shadergraph, even for built-in now.

>>534839005>>534839603oh p.s. this still only works with transparent materials. all opaques are drawn before all transparents no matter what. so if you want to draw something opaque over everything else uh... you can't without "renderobjects (experimental)" and that shit breaks all kinds of effects like fog and SSAO. basically the REAL way to do this sort of thing is rendering a whole second camera (render the first camera to texture, then your special object with the second camera on top of the texture) but that's a performance killer for some reason.
older versions of Unity did this without problems, no big performance cost. they could just render multiple cameras into one buffer. URP is borked in this regard. okay, bye.

You know what sucks?
Iโm passable at art, music, and modeling but I cannot for the life of me get programming to work
>inb4 someone says โYou have a compiler for your coding that says it sucksโ
Hereโs the difference. Iโve been trying to learn programming for up to 10 years.
Iโve been drawing for 4, modeling for barely 1, and doing music for barely 2.
Guess which ones I made more progress with in a fraction of the time.
Sure, my modeling, art, and music isnโt too good, but I got the hang of all of those much faster than I have programming, and each time I work at them I see improvements.
Now compare that to programming, where I havenโt made any progress in 10 years

with the state of this economy, it's best to develop games that are made for wholesale like nubby's

>>534857617Translating Russian and you fucking faggots begging for help then rejecting the help and further crying about it like that's going to change anything.
>>534857580Because โProgrammingโ is not about logic.
Art, music, modeling, and so on all have mathematical certainties as to what is โRight.โ A good drawing, song, or model are able to be told apart from a bad one because you know what that looks like.
Programming is absolutely nothing like those, itโs a complete clusterfuck where no amount of mathematical understanding can help you.

You understand the absolute bare minimum and refuse to learn more on any given topic. You're not even a jack of all trades, you're a loser.
>>534857307They really arenโt.
Programming is nonsense where youโre not able to realize what could do what.
If I want a drumbeat, I use a drum, simple as.
If I want a polygon, I trace one out in Blender, also simple as.
