Flying again after a long break. Downloaded more scenery and trying thailand for a change. Takeoff was a mess because there was no ATIS even though charts say there should be and the route is a mess because of my mistake but whatever I'm rusty. Slowly getting the hang of things again, it's interesting how much you forget but it all comes back.

Only literal boomers are still playing FSX and some even play FS2004, I think FlightGear has an incredibly small community that play mostly for a Space Shuttle addon which I believe is supposed to be good. That reminds me, Orbiter is still going, that has a small, autistic community too.

Well, sometimes windows games run better under linux via proton. Reason is not simple, but I'd speculate sometimes it could be caused by the game's original DirectX usage being somewhat sub-optimal and since Proton translates DirectX calls to Vulkan, it could result in more optimized graphics API calls. Also some games may use Windows API's incorrectly, resulting in unnecessary CPU load and then proton comes along with its own wine based Windows API mock and the problematic call happens to be something wine just discards or whatever so it won't waste CPU anymore. But I'm no expert, just speculating since I've heard many games do in fact run better under linux via proton.

To add to this: performance depends on so many variables it's difficult to trust any claims by randoms on the internet. You could have a different GPU driver version on either OS, resulting in differing performance. Or different Windows version, or linux Kernel version, or you could have sub-optimally compiled Linux kernel or its modules. Or old Mesa3D if AMD GPU on Linux, or whatever. Too many variables.

Science vessel with a big science ROV that does livestreams. There was an expedition near the coast of Argentina for the past 3 weeks, in a largely uncharted canyon. The goal was to observe and safely kidnap critters for studying since the previous way of sampling the area was with nets ripping the sea floor and mangling the whatever animals they catch. It got very popular for a few reasons so there will be highlights reels in the near future.

At least here in Europe you can join a club that has shared planes, costs like 50 bucks a month and a bit of time to do maintenance work. They'll teach you how to fly too.

What do you mean too dumb? You tried it? It was better before these 2 new X-Plane 12 version releases, now it just issues vectors and visuals for me all the time, I don't know why. It also issues nonsensical altitude changes and even if you ask some altitude it will issue an altitude change again after.

Does the exact same for me and it's just plain wrong. If you filed an IFR plan (which in x-plane atc means you "requested clearance" after filing a flight plan), you'd assume ATC to issue you IFR procedures, not visual procedures and especially not visual procedures during a weather that's clearly IMC. I guess ATC could give you visuals even in real life even if you're IFR if the weather allows it, not otherwise and even then they would probably prefer to issue instrument approaches.

ATC seems like the one thing no flight sim can get right. Apparently Asobo are working with Vatsim to improve ATC in MSFS 2024, which currently mostly works until it doesn't. Beyond ATC and Sayintentions still don't support VFR for some reason, but I believe you can use either one or both in DCS so maybe you can use them in X Plane too, I'm not sure.

Yeah and it's actually interesting how difficult it seems to be to implement. I've actually wondered how hard would it be to code an X-Plane ATC plugin that somewhat works for IFR but I have so many other projects going on I can't afford to spend time on that. And I'm not like some kind of master programmer so if people who are way more intelligent than me cannot implement it then what chance do I have.... The reason it's interesting is because somehow I would like to assume it can't be that difficult, right? But it seems like it really is difficult.

Yeah, but naively if you just think about it logically without knowing any better, it seems like you have a bunch of data for an airport and you choose the procedures from that dataset based on some set of variables.
>file flight plan
>atc plugin marks departure, destination and alternate
>atc plugin builds map of route in memory
>atc plugin tracks player location, marks waypoint as checked as long as player aircraft crosses a waypoint with some distance threshold
>atc plugin has database of ifr procedures, selects one based on filed flight plan and current weather
>atc plugin has database on airspaces, commands altitude changes based on this (has to calculate trajectories and shit, difficult)
Yeah well I'm not wasting time on this anymore, it is actually difficult. Still, if I had time, I'd like to try to implement an incredibly simple, dumb, IFR ATC plugin. Dead-simple, so simple it cannot go wrong because it just follows your filed flight plan.

Yeah I think the complexity comes in when the flight plan isn't enforced, you can toggle this in msfs, if it has to take into account weather, traffic, and other stuff then it gets a lot more complicated.

Oh wait, they taught neither of this in school, only useless bullshit like igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic rock, or what poet died from what venereal disease.
I remember they stopped the history curriculum at the fall of the Berlin Wall, because "we ran out of time for the school year". And even then, they didn't explain shit, you just had to mantra back "nineteensixtytwocubanmissilecrisisnineteensixtyeightpraguespring" when prompted by the teacher, like a good fucking parrot.
Total waste of time that only exists to keep dangerous intelligentsia elements busy, instead of plotting the replacement of normal society with some pseudo-technocratic socialist cockamamie, where the highest ranking members of state are like philosophers and human-science academics or some shit, like they usually do.

This is absolutely the most low IQ braindead argument ever.
School isn't supposed to teach any of those (usually). At my school I learned how to run a business somewhat since we had lessons about ROI ROE and other business basics, but what primary and secondary schools are meant to teach you is HOW TO STUDY and learn so that you'll be able to do well regardless if you end up doing a blue collar job, white one or go to university. And in the earliest years to develop your mental plasticity.
>hurr durr why do we need to study history?
So that you don't end up like a cattle that can't think for himself and can only spew out /pol/troon ready made tv dinner slogans, and because it's just the means to make you learn how to properly learn any subject.
>how to manage personal finances
>actual life skills
>how to fix your own shit
>the importance of honor and integrity
Your parents are supposed to teach you that shit, if your family was useless it's not the fault of school system.
>Name five useful and life changing things you learned in school.
-How to properly and efficiently study a subject or learn a skill
-How to work in a group of people
-How to improve critical thinking
-How to improve problem solving skills
-How to deescalate conflicts when you're forced to work with retards (literally life changing)
I think it's obvious, but I'm not american. Outside of the US efficient school systems, even if sometimes flawed, actually exists and help people.

To me this is either:
-you were too dumb to understand why you were taught certain things (most likely)
or
-you're sadly an american whose entire school curricula is in fact simply repeating things mnemonically without understandy why because the US is a failed society.
If it's the second case then you are right in the sense that school in the US is mostly useless outside of universities (where the only students who are thriving are international ones).
But the US is not the world, so saying that "school is useless" just based on your anecdotal experience is wrong and just the opinion of a salty retard, having a meltdown on /simg/.
>not real life knowledge and skills
And like I said at first, your parents should've taught you those. Go complain with them. School doesn't need to teach you how to change a lightbulb.
>So case closed, you're a seething teacher, bitter about being nothing more than just barely necessary.

Before the Shoreham crash there was this one and my dad was actually there as a child when it happened.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1952_Farnborough_Airshow_crash
>In less than a second, the aircraft disintegrated: the outer sections of the wing, both engines and the cockpit separated from the airframe. The cockpit, with the two crew members still inside, fell right in front of the spectators nearest the runway, injuring several people. The engines travelled much further on a ballistic trajectory; one engine crashed harmlessly, but the second one ploughed into the so-called Observation Hill, causing most of the fatalities. The rest of the airframe fluttered down and crashed on the opposite side of the runway

Now that you have defeated dumb American F-35 poopdickschizo, it's time to burst your bubble, like life usually does for you, teacher-kun. I'm neither of these things. I'm European, Prussian-system educated, and though I know you will immediately pounce on this in your desperation for ammunition against my in your impotent crusade, above average intelligent, and a former gifted child.
Instead of declaring imaginary victory over the evil strawman you created, and throwing bitter seething tantrums, it may be time for introspection instead, on how your life has gone so extremely wrong.

I have never in my life met a teacher who wasn't purple on the lips from the hypoxia of living on Mount Stupid their entire life.
My three favorites were the literature/german teacher who was a 100% certain Chaplin spoke perfect German in the dictator, the "biology" "teacher" who told us animals don't have souls, because god only gave humans souls (ahem, biology), and the physics/chemistry teacher who grades us on whether we can recite definitions verbatim (and I mean absolutely verbatim, like you're reciting a poem), but was shocked that we didn't understand what any of these actually meant.
Teachers are literally the dumbest motherfuckers alive, if it weren't the case, they would be doing anything else but teaching.

Also it's interesting how teachers are the only labor class that have nationwide unions in pretty much every country, yet broke as fuck in almost every country.
Trucker, taxi, construction etc. unions will shut down the entire country over a 10% pay cut (or even an annual raise that's not big enough), meanwhile the apparent high-IQ megabrain intellectual scholar teachers are incapable of earning a living wage anywhere. Curious.

I just remembered back in history class. We were told Mussolini won with demagogue promises, that was the keyword, "demagoguepromises", "demagoguepromises", like a trained dog, if the teacher said Mussolini, you replied with "demagoguepromises". Except most of us either didn't know what the word demagogue even meant, or if they knew, why exactly it was a bad thing that a totalitarian gangster won by bullshitting through an election campaign.
And school teacher are the first to gasp in shock, that students will rather believe le ebil disinformation websites than them, the minimal-wage government worker.

I heard the greeks claimed they already had 2 FOD damage (very minor thankfully). When asking someone in the known they told me they didn't do all the proper maintenance for both their runways at LGKL and the M-346 tried to blame improper communication and manuals, but the manuals are the same for every member of the M-346 JUG. I then started following a bunch of greek M-346 pilots on social media and from the stories they posted I often saw stuff like doing engine tests inside the hangars (should be done in a specific clean area of the base), cold and dark but without mass cable installed or like vid rel, where they do engines inspections without the proper and required soft and anti debris suits. Doing an engine inspection dressed like this is just asking for trouble.

nta but It would be neat to recreate the RSV demo team manouvres, but I just think it's useless in DCS, especially if it would be a paid module. With trainers you can learn the basics etc, but with the C-27J or the C-130 what do you do? DCS doesn't even have a functional ATC.

Dualshock 4 + DS4Windows
Set up right stick as a virtual mouse for panning view. Set up left thumbstick in "enhanced precision" mode for more... precision. Set the touchpad up to have seven extra inputs for swiping up/left/right/down and for clicking on the left/right side + both sides at once. PS button is an extra free input over most Xbox style gamepads. The only issue is that the two triggers don't work as a single axis which makes it a pain to set up for yaw on some games, but you can get around this by just setting up the gyro as a yaw axis instead, turning the whole thing as a steering wheel. You can even get rear paddles for two extra inputs without needing to take your hands off the sticks.
Honestly enough for basically anything less complex than the F-16.

on the one hand there's something comfy about how slow these really planes fly
On the other hand I could really do with the fucking half hour of slowly climbing in a circle before doing a mission
Also that the game doesn't explain what a reconnaissance flight entails and I had to google it to find out I should have had a camera or notebook attached to my plane before I set off and spent like 15m flying over enemy lines
At least the game seems fairly forgiving with jumping out mid mission

Yeah, what a disappointment of a game. Incredibly cool systems and lore all around but balance is complete ass and performance is equally terrible - like how do you design a game where dronespam is a nearly uncounterable strategy but 20+ cheapo cannon drones at once tanks framerate to sub-single digits on my 5800x3d? If any game ever deserved a big NMS-style revival it was CoADE but doesn't look like that's ever happening.

I'm currently flying the I-16, and haven't run into anyone in the past few sorties, it's mostly been bomber escorts that take nearly an hour to get to their target without time compression. Their formations are usually fucked too, the lead is usually 2km ahead and they drop their bombs when he does lol

taking off, landing, doing it in weather, doing it in the dark, doing it with a big plane, doing it with a small plane, doing it with a fast plane, doing it with a slow plane, doing it with a helicopter, sightseeing at places you've been irl, sightseeing at places you'll never see irl, going from point A to point B without a GPS and without getting lost, playing pretend bus driver in the pretend sky, larping as a fighter pylote and doing zoomy-shooty in different historic contexts, etc etc.
if you aren't interested in aviation you probably won't be interested flight sims.

I mean, it's whatever you want it to be. Either do the career or fly a really easy plane to sightsee. Or you can choose a more complex module and learn it fully while trying to simulate actual flying. Do crazy stunts etc.

Pretty game and I get what the devs have gone for, like a day by day sim of WW1 where you can be a pilot, but having most of your missions be "take off, fly over an area for 20 minutes to patrol or recce, land" is really not for me.
I tried Rise of Flight again - it feels weird, like it's not really a sim at all. The mouse joystick is kind of fucked as well.
I need someone to make a Nuclear Option (but it's WW1) as soon as possible.

For the SU3 update
>tonnes of fixes all over
>quite a few aircraft updates, the G111 received a giant update, the twin otter quite a big one too, PC-12 pressurisation issues fixed (I think)
>avionics updates and fiixes
>big efb update
>Improved estimation of descent point for IFR flights and other altitude-related fixes, finally
>other atc fixes
>some career mode fixes
>Fixed areas around airports sometimes did not load properly and stayed blurry
>distant clouds and cloud lighting improvements
>traffic improvements
Overall there are lots of fixes, I was actually expecting there to be more plane updates than there were but overall it sounds alright. Most importantly
>Added aerodynamic interaction between tornado and aircraft

is there any website or resource with blueprints to make your own sim rig?
I love flying but having to set up the HOTAS everytime turns me off from doing it more regularly.
I was thinking of welding myself a seat that I can just get into, have the HOTAS ready, put on the quest and go
Before I start 3D modeling my own setup, is there any blueprints out there already?

I'm using AutoOrtho now and it improved the terrain quite a bit. Sometimes it still shits the bed tho and you need to run it before running the sim.
The bigger issue are the roads and buildings, which I think you can fix with Simheaven or other third party mods, but I can't remember if it's free nor easy/user friendly to install.
Xplane is nice but it feels like the devs just plop into your laps a skeleton and expect you to finish it yourself.
I can appreciate this since you can't tailor the experience to your needs and it could become a fully offline long term sim you actually own, but third party modules require an activation code so that will also become a problem in the future.
Oh, and I fucking hate how a lot of the userbase on the Xplane forums often responds to issues, they are the perfect example of boomer mentality, where if you point out a bug or a missing feature they will fight teeth and nails on how it's totally realistic, not a bug but a feature etc.
