Despite the trash translation, it has a better story and better characters. First game, Sumeragi are an over the top evil megacorp with flimsy justifications (adepts'll fuck things up, so we need to do human experimentation and death camps, and then we'll mind control all adepts to be our personal army to take over the world). Second game, Eden are a bunch of orphans who survived some fucked up shit, and became radicalized against the normies because efforts of outreach ended with China building another death camp. Fucked up situation all around, and it's hard to feel that good about killing them like Sumeragi, even if it's necessary. But that tragic edge is what gives GV2 a lot of its staying power. You reach the main villain, and she's like "yeah, I hate doing this too and wish coexistence was possible, but this is the way the world works, proven by all the adept abuse I've seen/suffered" and then it's a fight to the death.

I think GV3 has the best characters, but only because they hang around rather than instadying. Recruiting the boss characters was the right move. I think if you had more time to interact with some the Eden members, they'd have been the best. They're really fun characters in Eden's Party. The special sauce that's missing from the GV3 cast is the misery. All the best GV characters have some of the most messed up backstories imaginable, like Gibril's dad abusing her and her mother, beating her mom to death, and Gibril unlocking her power from the trauma and using her own mom's blood to kill her dad. You can also look at Elise, Zonda/Tenjian, Asroc, Nova, and Gunvolt himself.

One thing I never got about Gibril was why she would sign on to the "kill all nonadepts" plan when her mom, who she legitimately loved, was one and died protecting her? Several of the other Eden members had good relations with nonadepts. Desna loves her nonadept parents strongly enough to flee her home to protect them from the adept hunters. Asroc wants to kill all nonadepts, to avenge his nonadept family being burned alive (ironically, he canonically dies similarly to them, boiled alive in his armor).

They kind of gave up on that over time, since the central premise is "wouldn't it be cool if you (reader; kid) were a ninja (soldier)?" You ultimately can't depart from that, and especially not when you start a sequel series with the same fucking premise.

It's like how the MM timeline keeps ragging on fighting intelligent robots but the story always has to have fighting intelligent robots so we get literally centuries of the same thing happening over and over again.
You need a fundamental rethinking of the premise, like with BN (netbattling is largely harmless and something kids do for fun).

She only uses subjugate in the English script when talking to GV. In the Japanese, she says that they'll be able to overwhelm the old humans.

It depends on the route too. If it's GV, she's less harsh and even seems to show a little bit of regret (implied with the "possibility of coexistence has passed" line). If it's Copen, she's more overt about killing all nonadepts.

Aside from that, I think Zonda would be one of those battles where had GV lost, he wouldn't have (permanently) died. Zonda's last line before the battle starts is:

No, she's evil. To be honest, I much preferred Nova and Asimov as villains. Both kind of have a point in their own way, whereas Zonda was just a cult leader who wants to kill humans (her minions have sympathetic backstories. but her not so much) and she doesn't actually care about her subordinates. People might say she has a tragic backstory, but it isn't really emphasized. Tenjian tells us the story to explain why he hates humans but Zonda doesn't really play it for sympathy or anything. I don't remember her trying to convince the player character or the game presenting her as having a point, whereas Nova and Asimov seemed to get more time to set out their rationale and their deaths were played for drama, with Asimov's being seen as tragic, unlike Zonda, which the game is very neutral about her dying (because she didn't deserve a sympathetic sendoff).

The fact that Zonda professes love for Eden but doesn't really react to their deaths, even that of her own brother, makes me think she's a cult leader who cares more about attaining godhood than actually saving the people around her. I don't remember her expressing any anger or remorse about the player character killing Tenjian, which makes her a sociopath and implies all her talk of love was just manipulation and she was just using him and the others.
It's possible she does care about them but needs them to die for the plan, but I feel if that were the case she'd have been presented as more conflicted or emotional about their deaths. It's possible her powers mean she doesn't really understand death as she can just conjure copies whenever she wants, or that she plans on recreating them when she's a god, but that isn't really emphasised, but she's not really presented as immature or out of touch with reality due to her powers or anything, she's just cold, egotistic, and mean-spirited in a way Asimov and Nova aren't.

I think the fact that I like the Eden Seven makes me dislike her more seeing as she comes across as coldly using them as pawns and discarding them after they gave everything for her, and Gunvolt calls her out for seeing Joule as a tool, not a person. She sees everyone as tools, because she is a sociopath.

I can see where you're coming from and I hope this isn't coming across as judgmental or insensitive. The game isn't really known for its subtlety though so I feel if we were supposed to sympathize with her then her death would have been played for greater tragedy and there would have been more humanizing moments along the way, perhaps with her mask breaking and her expressing regret and apologizing to the Seven for her actions as she dies.

Without that, I feel INTI's intention is that we're supposed to see her first and foremost as a genocidal and evil megalomaniac, not a conflicted freedom fighter or sad orphan girl dealing with her trauma in the worse ways. She is the most evil villain in Gunvolt IMO because even Asimov had something wrong with his head in iX to make him like that.

It doesn't help that the real final battle is between Gunvolt and Copen and what with that and Mytyl's death Zonda ends up kind of forgotten like trash once she's defeated, meaning she makes less of an impression as a villain than Nova and Asimov, which is another reason I don't like her as much. In GV3, they don't bother touching on her too much, though Gunvolt has some choice words to say about how bad she was, whereas Nova and Asimov had a mixed response from GV and redemption battles (Zonda had no redemption battle), which should tell you everything you need to know about her.

I think Zed was the best antagonist in the game. He was just a spoilt rich guy who wanted to rule, but unlike the others, him wanting to rule wasn'tt purely based on egotism and sadism (I'll die on the hill that Nova, Asimov and Zonda all wanted to rule not for the reasons they said, but because they wanted to oppress and hurt others), but because he genuinely did want to help people. I kinda dig the idea of an unsteady alliance between Copen and Eden going into the iX timeline. Not only because of the semi symmetry, but also because this Copen would start out by possibly being the most venomous we'd ever, EVER see. Having lost not only Mytyl to Sumeragi, but also the salt in the wound of finding them to have offed Nori as well. It's all the tragedy of the GV2 ending, but without the added reassurance that there is always an estate waiting for him, should he come around. Now, he has nothing.
Something has to have happened inbetween this, and the mellowed out RoboCope we see in iX who realizes Sumeragi is the issue, and not necessarily the adepts. I don't think a hundred years of anime seethe would be enough to spur that kind of reflecting.

Like, her snide remark towards Gunvolt being "so innocent it's almost cute" when he was laying out his experiences and arguments made me want to punch her in the face. For comparison, the Japanese script has her acknowledge his position and walk him through how living in Sumeragi has made him blind to the crimes being committed against adepts worldwide (yes, it's that bad that Sumeragi is considered relatively nice, probably why adept refugees like Asimov keep trying to sneak through the barrier).

8-4 also implies she sacrificed Eden to become a god ("Let's just say I'm seriously considering it"), whereas the Jap script states only if others ask it of her. She's implied to be two-faced and manipulative in the cult leader-esque way she talks to the other Eden members, vs her more casual and cruel attitude towards Gunvolt and Copen. Again, in the Jap script, she talks to GV and Copen similarly as she does to everyone else, meaning that she was genuine in those earlier scenes. Generally speaking, in the Jap script, she sounds a bit like a kid in-between the perversion, whereas 8-4's script has her talking like an evil adult.

I know 8-4 is wrong, too, because it introduces all sorts of inconsistencies in her character that aren't present in the script breakdowns anons here and the wiki have provided. Why would she cry out for Tenjian if she's just using him or spend her day cheering up another adept child (she didn't know Olga had potent powers, and even afterward, allowed her to choose if she wanted to stay with Eden or be placed under the care of civilians)?

This is a dead horse in /mmg+inti/ by this point, but it still gets me fired up.
