I'm of the "toybox" school of everythingfaggotry: where even if certain characters and stories are handle horrendously, someone competent with interest in exploring it can possibly redeem it later (as bad as things are for Silver, for instance, the Generations boss fight helped a lot to let him at least be accepted as part of the cast which can help him later if Nakamura ever takes the reins). Forcing IDW to be very strictly "on par" with Blade of Courage means its portrayal isn't considered definitive just on the basis of canonicity, and therefore will be judged primarily on its merits relative to other "canon" sidework. This helps A LOT to defuse the virulent dicksuckers who rely on that to deflect critique of the book to Sega itself.

This also allows someone to fish, say, Tangle without the incompetence of Ian/Evan tainting it. Or hell, just puts a ray of hope for Yuta to avoid ending up like Chris.

Sparky always has the right opinions

Rouge's character is constructed around Knuckles, and Knuxouge as a ship is the focal point but through the lens of them hating each other's guts, it's a double-tsundere ship scenario.

But most of Rouge's actual appearances is shackled to Team Dark and SHADOW, so he soaks up all the attention so Rouge is just his teammate/ally/business partner/totally not friend. And so the side of Rouge we see most isn't her actual character description, it's her more subtle, hidden depths like how genuine she would care about someone, and almost taking on a slight maternal role towards Shadow at times when she isn't just flirting with him. Which is why Shadouge is so popular and Knuxouge isn't by comparison. I myself played 06 as a kid, I saw that scene of Rouge confessing undying loyalty to Shadow, and when I first created my Rouge-inspired character in my project, it was specifically to give the Shadow-inspired character a friend. My own first impression of Rouge is largely shaped by the lens of her being Shadow's closest ally.

But, that isn't all she's "supposed" to be. Even that role gets misinterpreted as them being best friends and GUN agents or whatever, when Team Dark is supposed to be the DARK team whose not as heroic as Sonic's team, and do shady stuff or whatever, hence why they are described as "not friends".

So surrounding Rouge is layers of how she appears vs how she's used vs how she's meant to be used, all adding up to what's basically ship wars and characterization confusion.

Personally, my current thoughts on where Rouge "belongs" is on Team Rose, away from both Knuckles and Shadow so that both relationships are more balanced out and not soaking up her entire identity, and Rouge's more amoral and selfish side can take the spotlight more against Amy and Cream.

I think Blaze should be #5 with the Core 4 around Sonic, and she should also be partners with Silver. And that's basically what I do with my character "Star" in my project. She's the fifth main character, and she's the polar-opposite to Energy primarily, he's cool and she's "hot" and stuff. But I also have a character named Cosmix to be the Silver, and he was created specifically to be the Silver to Star's Blaze and so the two have a specific dynamic that's integral to both characters.

The actual idea with Cosmix and Star is that he acts like Sans, and that's a direct contrast to Star being very ambitious and intense or whatever, in such a way where they're meant to balance each other out because if left alone, they'd spiral into self-destructive habits. And that's kinda how I see Silver and Blaze. Meaning, like... balancing each other out, in a way that doesn't exist with Sonic and Blaze.

Sonic can balance Blaze out, but not vise-versa because Sonic is SONIC. The more mutual relationship can only exist between Silver and Blaze, so Silver feels like the version of "Sonic" that Blaze needs the most. Not Sonic himself. Sonic can never be that kind of figure for her in the long run.

I guess it's like... from Blaze's perspective, "Sonaze" is the logical conclusion. But that absolutely doesn't work from Sonic's side at all. So, Silver is the best fit as the "Sonic" Blaze needs.

Maria is Shadow's Amy, essentially. What Maria herself actually becomes is a blend between a simple childhood friend that's basically a sister figure crossed with a love interest in some way, but also an older, motherly kind of nurturing caretaking role as she's the one who basically helps Shadow learn about the world and stuff. It's why some people can compare it to a girl and her dog, even though that itself is not "true" to what Shadow and Maria actually are to each other.

Either way, Maria was "everything" to Shadow. Imagine someone whose like your best friend, your sister, your girlfriend, your mother, your teacher, etc, all in one package. Rouge is the polar-opposite of Knuckles, in the form of his weakness (Women), and her calculative charming personality is a direct contrast to Knuckles' straightforward yet very trusting mindset. But Rouge's debut is on the Dark Side with Shadow, so Shadow and Rouge are allies. So, with Shadow, we see Rouge eventually become very affectionate and caring towards him, especially since he's so cold, so the Sonic/Amy side of Rouge is triggered in a "come on, open up and enjoy life" kind of way. This then means that Rouge becomes a Maria-figure for Shadow, in a way that contrasts with Rouge's outer appearance as a manipulative backstabbing spy who only cares about what benefits herself.

Shadow has some sort of subconscious need for an older, maternal-esque role in his life to pull him out of his shell, and that's exactly what Rouge is for him.

I think it's 100% in Rouge's nature to be like that, but it's only in that kind of context where we'd even BEGIN to see it. But it also has the problem of completely outshining her "usual" characterization as well.

Rouge's nature towards Shadow is her hidden depths, we shouldn't see it all the time or even know it exists. Rouge is supposed to be selfish and manipulative and ONLY caring about what will personally benefit herself. The fact that Rouge does have a heart, and can be a very affectionate and compassionate and even loyal person should be the hidden, subtle aspects of Rouge we don't see at first but are there deep deep deep down.

It's the kind of thing that plays into how she contrasts Shadow and Knuckles. Shadow has a strong sense of purpose, to fulfill Maria's wish, that's inherently selfless. Knuckles sacrifices all personal desires to fulfill his duty to the Emerald, and carry on his ancestors' legacy. That is a sacrificial selflessness in both of them, that would force Rouge to self-reflect and realize that there's something more important than her desire to have pretty rocks in her hands.

I think I have it figured out. Nothing has actually changed internally about how Sonic Team views their characters. The manga is still reflective of how they were written in the 2000s. This is the Sonic that Sonic Team would like to write.

They're being stopped however not just by SOA, but also SOJ. The upper management of Sega that wants this brand sanitized to remain successful. In their eyes, the 2000s versions of the character are not considered brand safe and thus have to be neutered in order to appeal to a broader audience.

When you frame it like that, it makes sense why Chris (lore manager) said only material marketed globally is allowed to be canon. The manga was not intended to be "canon" because it's not brand safe. They did not intend to let it be marketed to western audiences because it's not brand safe enough. It's not considered palatable to broad audiences which is why Sonic Team's creative freedom is only allowed in a niche manga in a niche market (since Japan doesn't care about Sonic).

They were not expecting the mangas to do well with western audiences because of how hated that type of Sonic was in the 2000s.
