Jockeys are only half of it, their influence is stronger on the trainer side imo. Since the first idol horse the Japs have been going to autistic lengths to inquire about the real horses' personality on purpose. Many of the advanced race mechanics like stamina battle that utilize wit aren't in the game yet.
Theres some benefit to wit to reduce the amount of time rushed lasts, and stamina consumption on downhill, but people don't really have strong numbers on how big the benefits are.

With 850 wits, about 5 skills (this is including Swinging Maestro) will procc, plus minus one on average. What else do you want your Nice Nature to do with her stats?
