its not that failing checks was inherently a problem to me, as i said, i don't hate it, its a fun system that encompasses almost every interaction in the game. its just that, at specific crutch situations where i'm losing turns because the 8 INT enemy is somehow resisting my INT test or the enemy is dodging my 90% hit chance meelee attack without any kind of debuff on me like blind or some shit, it feels like an ass way to add difficulty in combat and the best thing you can try to mitigate it is adding disadvantages of your own that also has its own resistance check or trying next turn i guess.

that said, my own characters were hitting 60% chance attacks here and there and somehow resisting conditions and all that stuff, so it might just be my personal whining at this point.
but sure, the 5e system in its general sense was done pretty well to me.

I'm glad you're planning on returning to the game! There's so much to explore that you can only experience if you follow certain choices dictated by roleplaying, and Durge is definitely one of those paths!
Furthermore, some things about the main plot are revealed, so one could argue that Durge is the "canon" protagonist of BG3, even though he's present in a Tav run. If you visit Orin's quarters, you'll find the corpse of an albino dragonborn.

i squeezed every drop out of act 1, finished a quarter of the way into 7, which from what I've seen online, seems optimal.

I'm just now descending into the tower in a2 after making ketheric run away like a pussy down below before the final fight, and I'm only like 20% into level 9. I know theres like 3k worth of xp down here from enemies and checks, but I'm seeing people say they finish halfway through 10 somehow, but I've done everything, killed every mob there is to kill, finished every mission, etc.

the strategy that worked for me was focusing on killing mother superior quickly. used the shadowheart spell that decreases max health and bonked her, then i used grease spell to make it harder for enemies to group in the center and hopefully get proned and focused on taking down the spellcasters and then the rest.

Are you sure are haven't installed any mods that decreased XP required to level up? I've read further the description and the author says you should be able to reach about lv17 if you do everything.
And if I understand the XP curve rebalance correctly it doesn't really change how many levels you'd get by the end of the game, but only the pace of getting new levels.
