/indie/ - Indie & Misc. Games General
Space Wyrm edition

What the heck is this
/indie/ is the general for all indie games, such as Pragmata, Age of Decadence, A Hat in Time, Axiom Verge, Baba Is You, Battle Brothers, Card City Nights 2, Cave Story, Civilization, CrossCode, Cultist Simulator, Darkest Dungeon, Darkwood, DashBored, Dead Cells, The Desolate Hope, Disco Elysium, Environmental Station Alpha, FTL, Hollow Knight: Silksong, Knytt, LISA, Lobotomy Corp, Loop Hero, Machinarium, Middens, Monolith, Monster Train, Noita, OFF, OneShot, Rimworld, Rain World, Scav Prototype, Slay the Spire, Starsector, Subnautica, Sunless Skies, Underrail, VA-11 HALL-A, Yume Nikki, etc., as well as other games that just don't fit in any other general such as Atelier, Pillars of Eternity, Rayman, and Valkyria Chronicles. /jrpg/ is welcome. Idle, roguelite, shmup, 4x / RTS / city-builders, and RPGMaker games are cool too.

Mobile or consoles, Flash or Unity, freeware or early access. This place is a home for the indie game community and indie and obscure games that don't have a home. So be free to talk and share all your hidden gems, forgotten games and starving devs here.

>Can I talk about games that already have a general?
We mostly discuss games that are not popular enough for their own threads, however, all indie games are allowed. So talk about them if you want, but don't overdo it since you already have other generals for that.

Logic Bombs is a lot of fun.
Developer video: youtube.com/watch?v=x5bzBcFFP-k
Completed 1/4 of the puzzles so far and haven't felt hopelessly stumped by any yet but these last few have been tricky. Very satisfying to solve and each on individually doesn't take too long, done 40 (including tutorials) in 8 hours. Nothing too brain bending yet but am already waking up with visions of grid layouts and bombs, which is a good sign for a puzzle game.

Nta. My main complaint playing Darkest Dungeon is that it's really hard to not reach for a guide because it feels like you are wasting time if you don't.
You need to know in each area what interactions work on what curios, what supplies to bring based on the area length/level, and what team compositions tend to work well.
If you don't look it up you can say goodbye to a handful of attempts and resources for every single area and every single level, which wastes exponentially more time from losing recruits the higher the level the mission. I can't even imagine doing the darkest dungeon levels blind, imagining all the max level + gear parties lost causes me pain.
I'm probably just an autistic retard that hates losing but it's how I felt while playing

I'm gonna copy/paste what i said on /v/ about Ludosity last week.
Ludosity used to be cool, they could have stayed a hidden gem, but instead they got ubris and pride and are now another punching bag to those outside their echo chambers.
Anyone know of any other indie company that is kino like what Ludosity used to be?
I got asked "Depends on what you mean by "like Ludosity". Aesthetically? Or do you want an indie studio who has built up their own little universe of iconic characters from different games?".
The thread archived before i got a chance to respond so my reply to that is, a little bit of both if possible, maybe even some crossover.

My issue is that when a game has a lot of knowledge checks and you need a wiki, you're basically running down a checklist instead of playing a game. Once you've seen a few permutations of xyz, you get bored and stop because it's going to be roughly the same shit everytime. Which is probably why I got bored of DF, Rimworld, Darkest Dungeon, and probably a bunch of others I'm forgetting. The only differences in each run in these games is the start (what trinkets/heroes you get early on in DD) and a smattering of rng throughout the run (which you've seen before half a dozen times so it isn't novel), however the way you play really doesn't change at all once you've figured out your optimal playstyle

I think I'm just retarded, but I've always loved mining in every game I've played. VS especially shook things up for me because I hadn't played a game before with multi-layer rock strata with a spreadsheet to consult for which ore can spawn where in what quantities, and what shape the ore generates in. Add prospecting and the weird sanity bullshit from going too deep and it made mining pretty interesting. You have to get to a point where you have enough spare food to run around for a few days on an expedition looking for a rock strata and ore. Once found you need to head back and gear up for another expedition to mine out the ore, bringing a lot of food and spare supplies like ladders, torches, bombs, more picks, etc. If you are going into a cave with ruins, the gear requirements exponentially go up with healing and armor. I found the mining to be pretty compelling, and the only thing in VS really worth playing it for.

let me know how the reactor goes for ya.
shit kicked my teeth in in the demo since i had absurd single target burst damage but folded hard when there was more than one big guy going after me.
just reached the point where the timer for the reactor starts and just made 2 kids and my build feels pretty different this time. Probably not any stronger though. Picking skills that cost more than 2 or 3 dice seems like a trap at this early point because i just don't throw enough out to roll 4 times the same symbol without heavy rerolls and even then it needs some decent luck. And i don't think i managed to fire this one once yet.
>I still don't quite understand how the eugenics works(Both my kids suck hard compared to my MC and spouse).

Reactor was probably the first area in the game that actually felt like it was putting up a challenge compared to normal but still can't say it was too hard on the default difficulty. Granted I did end up with good HP eugenics(both MC and spouse had ~500HP, lowest HP on child was 450) picking a lot of dice roll stat boosts so me and the kids had 6 rolls per round with one of the kids even getting a couple of lucky levels during the expedition to have 8 rolls(which of course after marrying him off to a spouse who had great attack stat---he has 80 she has 160---, their child had shit stats all around), and I haven't really felt at risk of dying at all on any of my dudes. For reference my MC mainly focuses on vanguard skills just stacking up shield and doing damage by doing so, child 1 went berserker and his 8 rolls + the skills that restore HP help him recover, and the other child is the weakest of my reactor trio and had really poor level ups but she was still a body.

>Fall for youtube slop and get primordialis because the gameplay looked interesting
>Its meh and there is barely any variation in early builds so you always end up doing the same thing that work again and again

I mean its not from lack of trying either, the only build that seem even reliably viable is either a spam of electric nodes, spikes or a mix thereof. Cold inducing cells are kind if okay but its a gamble to take it since it require other rng dependent drops to be viable, and explosives are literally useless because you cant make a bomb worth shit that doesnt drain you so much biomass the enemy can regen before you can send another torpedo or whatnot. Every single build I try to make that isnt a razor edged sperm or an electrical pin cushion get inevitably screwed down the line.

This kind of shit is really rubbing me off the wrong way, why the fuck include rng based roguelike mechanics if they provide absolutely no enjoyment? Normally these would be to add variation, but right now half the options (aka 2 out of 4) are nearly useless past the initial fight and even then...

The dialogue is just portraits and not really a lot of voice acting. I think there's a couple random voiced lines and? idk, dialogues are always just mute. and the opening has voice acting.

To put it into perspective, Noita is kind of similar at a base level (replace organism customization with wand customization, basically you are the wand) but at least they add new unlocked or later biomes "spells/cells" to the base drop table so exploring and discovery feel like an actual upgrade. Primordialis in comparison just suck, like imagine if you had nothing but bouncing bubbles, the base spark, the shotgun spell everytime you started a noita run, and you coudlnt find anything better almost every single time. Also I hate how your attempt at making homing stuffs have some builtin timer while the enemy made ones can just stay forever, really limit the viability of a lot of potential builds.

Hi mister Amplify_FA (which is totally an offline name but I will call you that anyway)
I just want to let you know that your batteries can't support 3 personal roboports. Each of them take 2mj per second (aka 2 mw) while recharging bots and your battery capacity is only 126 mj. You will melt through your batteries in seconds. Removing 2 shields and a roboport to put more batteries and solar panels would help you a lot. I would advice you to add at least 4 solar panels to completely offset the legs drain.
By the way, I don't see any tank on your map. Since 2.0, they also have their own grid (just like K2) and are remotely driveable (they don't have innate radars unlike spidertrons though).

I can always add a bit more if I feel it's being a problem but for right now I've had enough of crafting equipment. The four shields were for dealing with a grouping of three nests, I can replace two of them with more batteries and panels if there's a problem.

The game uses your Factorio account name, you can go offline to use any name you want (Lan name in the options), you can hide it by opening the map (M) and clicking on the engineer icon. That hides player names entirely.

If you're playing space age (which I guess you are since you're using quality), you'll need to do a tiny bit of trains on some planets because the other options are simply not viable. Having a tank with a personal roboport on each planet is extremely useful as a back even if you don't plan to use it. Imagine that a biter suddenly attacks one of your big power pole on Nauvis while you're on Vulcanus, you'd need to put a ton of roboports to reach it or you can just request a big pole on your tank and drive using the minimap. They're also very useful for expansion now that artillery was nerfed and biter nest health scale. Of course if you absolutely don't want to do all of that, you're free to do as you want. It's your run and there are viable alternatives to mobiles bases like simply having a huge roboport coverage.
Another thing from 2.0, roboports now have an innate radar.

That because a lot of "roguelike" effectively just copied the rng mechanics for the purpose of replayability, without providing more than enough mean to think and act outside the box, which is what true roguelike excel at. Like take any sort of roguelike based on ASCII like stonesoup, rogue, qud, etc, the rng is there to add variability, which modern dev misinterpret as unfair rng kicking you in the balls because it decided to spawn an absolute unit that wreck you up, and thus misinterpreted it by codifting the unfairness into the game itself. So you basically end up with a shitty version of gambling where the house will cap your knees if you loose, and your prize is to keep playing.

To put it succintly, true roguelike are more akin to a bar fight where your own quick thinking is rewarded but you can still get fucked up by that glass mug thrown from across the bar, while many modern "roguelikes" feel more like dodging bullets coming from a firing squad, you can only hope even if the odds definitely arent in your favor.

Yeah...

High-quality item are incredibly powerful, on paper.
HQ vehicle and armor have HUGE equipements grid.
HQ weapons, turret, and ammunition allow for extensive coverage due to increased range, and vastly higher damage/ammo. It's great for platform, in theory.
HQ science is up to 6x more powerful.
Building's crafting speed bonus from quality is MULTIPLICATIVE with the bonus from efficiency module.

The payout seems awesome.

But setting it all up is just... a chore. A fucking chore that can turn the whole game sour...
The fact that each tier of item is basically its own thing make the logistic puzzles needlessly convoluted at time. One oversight can easily clog an entire production line.
Anonymous No.535464171 >>535464337 >>535464687
The worst thing might be researching the Epic tier for the first time ever.
Suddenly, you realize you now have to hastily redo all your quality-related production lines. Because there's now a 0.1% to produce an epic item at each step, which has probably nowhere to go.

No other research in the game can potentially cause multiple clogs across all planet. It's such an awful design.

Help me remember the game, anons.

It's an automation-focused RTS with tower defense elements. Released roughly around 2023-2025.
You have a large platform that serves as a "base" you use to embark on different maps.
You make a planetfall and then expand beyond your platform to gather and utilize resources to make chains of production.
Once you fill enough quotas you can take off on a different map (kinda like Against the Storm).
You also play as a robot and can help defend your base against ..ugh I don't remember, bugs?
Also it's not The Riftbreaker, but it looks similar, but more cartoonish.

Trying to figure out what exactly it does, and if there is even any advantage in the system. I hope it at least prevent subsystem damage. Because else it just a straight up detriment as it make your ship destroyable by weapons that otherwise wouldnt...
Anonymous No.535490780

The hull is linked to the energy shield, so you have 30 points. Take 20 damage to the shield, take 20 hull damage. Jump to a new beacon, you're back at 30 shield/hull. You get 2 overconserver drones for mid-fight recharge. It also has a special emancipation grid that deals heavy damage to boarders and causes any that die to instantly repair the system they were in, but it's mostly moot since very few boarders have an Eshield bypass in the first place.
But yes, it's a fantastically shit ship, especially as the B-slot of an actually good ship that you need to beat Chaos mode to get. A- and C- are much better.

I think the issue is that in the vanilla, the whole gameplay loop is about unlocking entirely new toys and overcoming restraints. Car, trains, armor, new turrets, then once you have roboports you become god and map distance barely matters anymore.

Then the dlc throws the player in some shithole with new terrain obstacles, limited space, and most stuff is just vertical scaling. Like, foundries for example, adds liquid metals and all that, but at the end of the day, its just another way to make plates and the same vanilla metal products that you can already make, but with bigger numbers. Super science lab? Just lab but faster.

I am glad, I only recently started playing and im kind of struggling with the progressions. Like I understand how Im basically at the clay stage now but Im honestly wondering if I will even be able to get a bronze saw going before winter, as the more I wanted to make one the more I realize it will be ages before I get anything made out of metal as I effectively need a whole smithy before even being ablebto make planks

Just might be nice to be able to store more stuff on a second floor that isnt made of dirt, I've seen you coudl collect tatch so I guess you can make roofs out of it?

For someone going in blind with no idea how much of anything I might need, it can be overwhelming, but I kinda like it. Just by curiosity tho, how many nuggets youd need to make all the tools needed? I have around 15 at the moment, which doesnt feel like enough.

Decided to hold off on building walls for now, I want the enemy to make a close expansion. I forgot that at some point I need to capture a nest and I'd like that to be closer by to my base and in my walls, could have had it on that little peninsula in the lower right but forgot and cleared out all the nests on it, sadly.
Have installed several mods, mostly for quality. I really want to dick about with it but I'm not waiting the entire game to do so. Maybe having access to early quality will be hilariously overpowered or perhaps it's going to be underwhelming, don't care either way I want it. One of my mods might have fucked with mining rates or something? Yesterday I had two miners run out of resources all day, but today I've had 20 run out in a couple of hours already. Perhaps I'm just paranoid.

You can make cobble for walls/flooring with one clay and 8 stones. It seems expensive, but with all the mining you'll be doing it's pretty decent. Thatch or wood for roofs is going to be your best bet, the shingles are expensive as fuck in terms of time and effort.
You should just suck it up and start with copper, it makes everything easier. The saw is extremely useful for making bigger chests and barrels to get tanning/preserving started early. 900u for the anvil, 200u for pick + hammer, and 100u for a saw. It's really not that bad if you find even a single surface copper vein that is rich/bountiful. No idea what you are on about with the crucibles, you just need one for the entire game unless you want to melt multiple batches at once which only happens later on for mass casting copper/brass/etc

Exactly. Did the same thing with a few of the levels in Snakebird, moved on instinct and ended up making progress in the puzzle without fully understanding how. Seems to be more of a problem in "process" based puzzlers which require making moves in sequence. The OG clans are a bit weaker imo, so that might be part of why you're struggling. They're a pretty straightforward clan though, you get simple access to durability through armor and scaling through rage. Usually you'll have units deal with high hp enemies, squishy backliners get dealt with through spells or your other clan. Something like a Vent with a damage upgrade would be able to clear all those sweepers in your example for 0 ember. The other route is building around imps, but that's more complicated and you're probably going to be relying on the imp queen and/or transcendimp so I wouldn't worry about it for now. If you're having trouble dealing with tanky dudes, try focusing more on damage scaling with rage and multistrike. The armor on kill champ upgrade line is more of a tank option, you can try the other lines for a more reliable heavy damage dealer.

this has zero practical application for actual gameplay. when you're ask for help in a cave and tell your friend how deep you are so he could prepare to descend in advance, you will use absolute metric because then he could just subtract his current height from your height. doing this with Y would force you to multiply it by the constant of how many blocks there are in a singular Y in your head.
i would understand it just as clearly if it would've been [0..50] blocks.

>The logic and scale is easy to infer without reading any docs, config files are extremely fast to read with the first digit already conveing the critical information.
it's easy to infer but it's not specific. to really understand how big your Y is you need to have to either:
read docs/config to understand that
have in-game experience
1 is dimensionless, and if i were working with a system like this, i would very much prefer using absolute values because, if I know player speed - i can get the rough scale of things without having to do extra math

>You're being really autistic about this while lacking information

>there's no need for such precision
Floats are not more precise than ints. They are less precise.
Sure the devs could have used arbitrary integer scale as well, like say 0-200 instead of 0-2f.
But if you knew anything about programming (or common sense) you'd understand why float conveys the use case of the number better than int would.

>>535793881
Your quick search only confirms that your idea of arbitrary scale is retarded since your idea doesn't match the default nor the max. Conversions will have to be done regardless.
It is a good thing it is clearly dimensionless, you absolute mong. That way nobody can confuse it for an absolute block value.
And what the fuck does player speed have to do with spawning depth bounds lmao please find better straws to grasp.

>>535794025
Try to get it into your thick skull that the world height is configurable, conversions have to be done regardless. You're desperately coping that it is fixed height when it's not.

Anyways, I find it unbelievable that you're advocating for a stupid hack that only happens when system architecture is not well planned. In worse software you often see jank where coordinate systems get expanded but params using old absolute values stay in place for compat reasons, confusing everyone.

numerically. i am talking about absolute precision. there's very little value for having a float difference between two values than a single block. i.e. i.e. Y 1.01 and 1.02 represent a one block difference in the context of the current world, there's no reason to have 1.05. and if your world is ten bajilion blocks high and such small changes would matter, then the actual numerical floating point imprecision then would actually hurt you lol.
>But if you knew anything about programming (or common sense) you'd understand why float conveys the use case of the number better than int would.
they convey it in vacuum. things do not happen in vacuum. it's counterintuitive otherwise because you constantly have to cross-reference your docs every time your want to adjust your values for your current sea level config. instead of, you know, just looking at the number to know how high something spawns and what's the difference between values in ranges.

>Your quick search only confirms that your idea of arbitrary scale is retarded since your idea doesn't match the default nor the max. Conversions will have to be done regardless
conversions only need to be done when converting world to non-default size. it's doing the same thing, but not being fucking retarded about it. instead of having main Y value, you have default scale which you then multiply by your value. it's just counterintuitive and impractical, because when you look at HEIGHT you want to get the precise value. it's the same reason, for example, we don't use machs (which is actually dynamic compared to a constant sea level) outside of very specific cases (because transsonic - supersonic transitions are very important), and even when referring to supersonic travel speed we still default to the normal SI units because you can INTUITIVELY UNDERSTAND the time it would take to travel a specific distance at a specific speed, instead of multiplying it by some constant to get the same result.
>It is a good thing it is clearly dimensionless, you absolute mong.
why would you ever fucking want that practically. say, you're making a cave terrain generator, and you want it to only be of specific height/length so you could fine-tune it for player experience. there's no reason to ever refer to the height of the cave in Y units instead of absolute values. same goes for spawn ranges. if they want to modify it either way - you setup the default, easily tweakable value first, and only THEN add the multiplier, not backwards.
>And what the fuck does player speed have to do with spawning depth bounds lmao please find better straws to grasp.
depth is distance. if you know player speed, and their rate of traversal, you can make rough estimates of how quickly the player would traverse caves of different heights. and time spent doing tasks is one of the most important design metrics you should care about when designing a game.

Feel like some modder first attempt at making a difficulty mod but without any balancing done, because from what you said it would mean tier 1 to 3 can only spawn above sea level (all 3d games work on a xyz 3 axis modelling, traditionally X is horizontal, y is vertical and z is depth), which doesnt even make sense in game as the drifters are told to stay underground during the day. So basically the only way they could spawn is from temporal storms and portals, so the early tier enemies normally found at game start could only spawn in overhwelming numbers. Feel more like an oversight than genuine tryhard attitude from the mod dev.

Bit over an hour into Sword of the Sea. It's designed more like Abzu but with the light platforming/traversal of The Pathless (except in skateboarding/surfing form). All these games are derivative of each other, but I'm disappointed it's not expanding on The Pathless more. That game had repetitive elements, but its open world and inclusion of boss fights made it stand out from Flower, Journey, and Abzu.

Flower just has you control the wind, so it's not really the normal kind of fun movement you expect. Journey puts you in control of a character, but the movement options are limited; just walking, occasional gliding, and sliding down sand dunes. In Abzu, you spend the majority of it as a scuba diver underwater, meaning if you don't like swimming in games then it probably won't be a fun time, though the controls aren't bad. The Pathless is where they put more emphasis on traversal, not deep by any means, but unlike the previous games you can learn how to be "good" at the mechanics, as simple as they are. There's also more typical gameplay progression in it, with you unlocking extra wingflaps for your eagle partner to carry you higher. Open exploration with optional puzzles, hidden lore, etc. Sword of the Sea gets to the point pretty fast, it doesn't seem as open as The Pathless but there's still platforming involved, and currency to collect that lets you unlock new mechanics. I even found a traditional trick score challenge, which is funny to see in an artsy-fartsy game like this. The common thread between all of these games is they're short and repetitive--you go around restoring parts of the levels and watch greenery/life return. The Pathless and this new one throw a few curveballs along the way, but they're still not really coming up with many new ideas besides the main gimmick

This feels like it's unfinished, like I get that all of the kids in the castle are orphans but... uh, we never learn what actually happened to their parents to begin with? They all get together, but... well their parents is still dead and our protagonist just leaves. This feels like it's supposed to build up towards something more but it just doesn't. I don't even say that we would have brought their parents back from the dead but, I thought we would have learned anything about them and the cataclysm they went to fight.

While on the topic of the OP, the game list could use a revamp. We want people to easily identify games they recognize, and associate with indie gaming. That way they are more likely to find the thread if searching and stick around if they do.
>Some games which probably aren't serving much purpose in the OP (unless they are way more 'relevant' than I am aware of):
Pragmata, Age of Decadence,Battle Brothers, Civilization, Darkwood, DashBored, The Desolate Hope, Lobotomy Corp, Loop Hero, Machinarium, Middens, Scav Prototype, Underrail, VA-11 HALL-A, Atelier, Pillars of Eternity, Rayman, Valkyria Chronicles.
Some games which probably should be in the OP:
>Balatro, Nuclear Throne, The Witness, Shovel Knight, Celeste, Katamari Damacy, Ultrakill, Furi, VVVVVV, Balatro, Hades, Outer Wilds, Star of Providence (monolith changed name), Animal Well, Void Stranger, Hotline Miami
And obviously Hollow Knight: Silksong should be moved to the top of the list given current circumstances.

I'd rather not remove games as the ones you mentioned have been brought up in the thread and serve their function. But I'd be down to add a half dozen or so more for visibility without having the OP get too clogged. Get more new people in talking about them perhaps.
Silksong is absolutely getting added to the OP, I'll probably toss in Outer Wilds, Underspace, and Balatro as they've been brought up before too.

Speaking of the OP, I'm also in the camp of not caring at all about Silksong, won't ever be buying it. But I'm still extremely tempted to make the OP of next thread something to do with it just for visibility, as mentioned before, lure them in with Silksong, get them to stay for other Indies.

I'd make a poll but it's a bit late in the thread.

This game is a blast, especially for the low early access price. I thought it was just going to be the simple 2D roguelite beat 'em up gameplay, but there's fun diversions like one-off missions, parkour stages, driving, mini GTA chaos. The progression seems decently extensive too. The biggest critique would be optimization, I'm reminded of the devs' previous game Anger Foot and how the performance was shitty there as well, so I'm not feeling optimistic

Dud of a new release. Yet another rhythm-based roguelite, this time a less interesting Vampire Survivors clone where you choose one of three difficulty-based objectives for each short stage. It reminds me of that indie Jap game Parry Nightmare, but that was much better because it wasn't a roguelite. This game is also trying to be stylish, and it's just a visual clusterfuck, not conveying the upgrades, progression, or story well at all. Some of the tunes sound fine I guess

Man... I have to redo the ENTIRE game, redo all the dungeons twice (because the optional bosses are not saved), get my level back, grind the reaper boss and redo all the events to fight the superboss and create the ultimate persona which I just learned isn't even saved when you summon it so I'll only get to use it for about 20 minutes before finishing the game since it requires level 91 to summon.
This sucks... At least I still got my funny trumpet skeleton with maxed stats and I took the time to grind the final shop weapons in the last dungeon. I guess I'll go for the alternative links for strength and sun. Time to doot my way through the entire game again...

Scav is fine honestly, it's just the crazed furries who take it too far and decided to vandalize the thread. And Scav isn't a bad game in itself either, nor are games that have anthro characters front and center.

Just remember, people don't hate the concept of furries, ie, anthro animals, they hate furries for being crazed sex fiends and moral-less degenerates.

Yeah we have a weird mix, some games were important to thread history. A few are deservedly there because of their status as part of the indie canon, and will long be remembered as classics. But both of those categories have some missing (where is nuclear throne?) and a lot of them are just whatever Anon happened to be playing at the time the OP was made. Looking at the archives I can see the case for keeping underail and batlebrothers
>>536169584
Probably best to remove it anyway. Not exactly a pillar of the indie gaming scene, does not have good history in the threads considering recent events, and will not make good first impressions. It's inclusion is detrimental, regardless of the fact it was vandalism.
