The sooner all the nodevs learn that they aren't cut out for game dev the better. Gamedev isn't for everyone. It isn't going to save you from poverty. You're not going to make the next big viral game. If you want money go find a job.

if Thomas Brush is so prominent as a gamedev podcaster (his words, not mine), and is the self-proclaimed voice of gamedev, then how come he hasn't interviewed my boy Eric Barone yet?
Is it because Eric doesn't push courses, he doesn't whine on youtube about selling his house, and he doesn't spam instagram with pictures of his family??

In short, is Thomas Brush afraid of my hero's aura? As Eric's official sidekick, I'm used to his aura. But a normie like Tommy Bee (thomas brush) definitely couldn't handle the cool factor of 10 that Eric is dishing out.

I think it would be a good idea for Tommy Bee to ease into the coolness factor by featuring me on his show. Then I can do some finagling and mingling with my hero (Eric Barone), and maybe get the two to link up, but only after Tommy has built up a tolerance to the WOW! factor that we're putting out.

>5 Dirk is completely invisible and you can only see two eyes in the black with his boots below
Currently, you have him crouching, then crouching but the ground is a few pixels lower, then crouch walking, the crouch walking at an intermediate point. Doesn't stack up to Intellect which sees him pick up the book, then the staff, and finally reaches enlightenment. Although for intellect 3 you should have him either reading with spectacles or surrounded by previous books to show progression, as right now it's a copy of 2.

I don’t know if you’re joking but I actually do this all the time and I don’t know how to stop it from happening.
My brain thinks of an idea and I become obsessed with it. It’s all I can think about 24/7. I’ll spend hours doing research to support the idea, I’ll start a text file to take notes, I’ll compile a folder of reference images.
Then a new idea appears and immediately I lose all interest in the previous idea as if it never even existed. The new idea takes over my life for the next few days to a week before another idea comes along and pushes it out. Repeat for 27 years.
This is making it impossible to make any progress. I don’t want to be an idea guy forever. Help.

In D&D, the attribute system is absolutely fucking retarded
3 of the stats are useless to most characters and are optionally dumped
3 of the stats are always useful to all characters
the stats serve no real purpose besides being a flat modifier to rolls and thus encouraging some players to simply not engage with entire parts of the game

I actually put a lot of thought into RPG stat systems, and concluded most are bloated and have "fake depth". e.g., if your game has two damage types identical in every way except for the stat they use (think dex/str in Souls games), that's fake depth. Ideally every stat should behave completely in completely different and novel ways from each each other. Pokemon, for instance, has no reason to separate special attack / special defense. If the games followed ideal design, those stats should be merged with their physical counterparts.

If you want to look at a system that does attributes right, look at LancerRPG.
The only shameful thing I find is that the stats you pick don't also relate to your out of combat capabilities in any way.
It's also a 4 stat system but maybe it's better that things are simple.

Somehow, they've made it so that all attributes are both meaningful and contribute to just about any build you could make, allowing you to take a tanky mech and either: Make it mobile, give it more ability uses, make it tankier or make it better at using heat abilities, all of these providing both defensive and offensive buffs.

>>535091194
Of course, I planted the frames of animation that I already have, I think that now I need a frame for opening chests and one for pickpocketing.
Why aren't you criticizing the charm stat though? It's even worse! I think for that one I'm gonna take pic rel and obscure his face for level one, but for 4 and 5 I'll have to basically draw a prince charming from Shrek.
>>535092756
Fault here is that in Dark Souls games you can't progress without combat. I also think that people going for DS games are somehow prepared for a challenge.
>picrel stats
I don't see any stats. A lot of players can mean anything in this context. 20 people in a room is a lot, but when you take the percentage of people playing Dark Souls then it's just a miniscule number.
Still, DS games are different breed. You have a lot of attributes, a lot of different weapons and eventually you will find a weapon that scales with your build. A lot of that text is just misdirection, a false problem that doesn't need solving.
For Dirk? It's a much smaller scale. You wanna hit hard? Go with strength and agility. You wanna avoid combat? You can perfeclty do that. You wanna do no-leveling-up run? I'll make it possible too.

Before I got into gamedev, I learned 5e completely off by heart. I might struggle a bit now but I could quote you any rule from the books and errata / trivia about it from many, many arguments over the rules over on /5eg/.
I have of course played it a number of times, including in a westmarches campaign with /5eg/ anons.

It really isn't good. If I dump Intellect then I'll almost never, ever be made to feel the wrath of it. The only times that Intellect is truly tested is when the DM decides "okay fuck you you non-wizard non-artificer INT-dumping assholes" and spawns an intellect devourer or one of the 2~4 other INT saves in the entire game. iirc Maze was one. Failing an INT saving throw is really bad but they're also rarer than unicorns.

As for the variety in classes and subclasses... Eh. It's all right. I feel people jump to homebrew too quickly because you can cover most character archetypes with existing subclasses. A lot of the expansions add stupid shit. There are also a lot of underappreciated options.
My biggest gripe with 5e is actually that it doesn't make it easy for the DM to balance things / teach the DM common mistakes like action economy advantage, but hey. I still think the stat system is stupid as fuck and rolling stats is twice as stupid.

At the risk of being considered "eceleb" posting, I finally got around to that video posted last thread where the developer making dreamsettler explained why the game failed, and wow, it pretty much was entirely his own fault.

Yet more proof that ultimately whether a game succeeds or fails depends entirely on the developer. You have no one but to blame but yourself for making bad games, agdg. Also, it's way more valuable looking at the failures than the successes.

We live in an era when over 90% of all active game development projects are run by complete incompetents who understand nothing about project management. AAA, AA, indie, III, solodevs - it doesn't matter - it applies equally to all groups.
The reason this makes such a difference in this industry is because this industry is unique in the absurd amount of time it takes to finish a project. This is why minor mismanagement spirals into a ruined project so often.

It has never been easier to make it if you are a guy that's actually good at project management and getting stuff finished. There's a real crisis of competence.

The problem of Gen-X erasure is more than just a meme of zoomers being dumb, because it's symptomatic of the larger problem of knowledge loss. The best video games were all made by Gen-Xers. Just finished the quests system which is 50 lines of code where you essentially define a quest step by a success predicate that takes the whole gamestate and returns bool, and a quest is a series of quest steps. No support for complex quest structures with optional steps or step alternatives, but this is enough to start out.
The UI to show your active or completed quests in a scrollable window was another 100 lines of code.

Always fun to implement a minimal version of something that adds a new dimension to the game.

Famously modern game design means smoothing all edges players can hurt themselves on for a smooth, retard-ready experience(which loses depth, replayability, difficulty for that)
It sounds like he's opting for a streamlined system where the game hands you some options to pick from. Sad but not unexpected, he cried about being on the verge of bankruptcy a few months ago.

Artists are only against AI because they feel personally threatened by it. They're almost always leftists and therefore have no actual morality or thoughts of their own, they're entirely driven by seeking the approval of their peers, and the hive mind consensus is that AI will take work away from artists therefore it is bad.

I hate artists, I think that the entire institution of art has been worshipping a cult of ugliness and sloth for 100 years and it has destroyed western culture. Watching artists suffer brings me joy

I'm against AI because it is shit and demonic. It is incapable of actual creation only of twisting that which already exists. It stands as an affront to the creative spirit and the divine essence of mankind made in the image of God.

AI exists primarily to waste people's time, to atrophy or prevent the development of real creative skills that people could have learned so that they might have taken part in the divine act of creation. It elevates the undeserving and the lazy, giving passable results without them having been earned. But the results are only just good enough for the most vapid applications. Impressing retards on social media with clips, or making memes, or making 5 second porn clips of photoreal futanari with 2ft cocks. But using it for anything real it's no good. .. Even that guy who went viral making those AI fps walking sequences of what looked like a game with 3d pixelart admits that the AI tooling isn't actually helpful in turning that concept into a real game

AI is a faustian bargain and the price may not be obvious at first but I think it's use will prevent you from ever actually being good at anything. And if you're already good at something you'll soon forget

None of you are opposed to modern artists because their art is ugly. You're opposed to them because you disagree with their politics

Most of you don't even have the brain capacity to have a taste that makes you select beauty from ugliness.

What is AI? Replacing one brand of ugliness with another that you support just because you can control it to make the ugliness you prefer. Beauty loses either way, and you're still fake and gay.

I get writer's block when it comes to creativity so I'm using randomized draws to fill out ideas madlib style.
One file is a massive list of words, the other is a massive list of global names.
Here's an example of filling out a town. I need three things: town name, town theme, and town quest. So here's the random draw:
[code]
> select.py n 5
[from line 182322]
Vallas
Valle
Valleau
Vallecillo
Vallecillos
> select.py w 5
[from line 285271]
Parishad
parished
parishen
parishes
parishional
> select.py w 5
[from line 368985]
syzygium
siziness
sizinesses
sizing
sizings
[/code]
So the town's name can be Valleau, it can revolve around a parish church that runs the town religiously and enforces a lowkey amish way of life or something, and the quest... have to riff on that a little, but i'll interpret "sizing" as like "surveying" and your quest can be a research mission to investigate something about the surrounding geography for them.

I'm just going to brute-force creativity through randomization and stream-of-consciousness until I get enough results that I actually like. I can't sit and make things up out of nowhere because I get embarrassed. It has to be externally sourced so that I'm not responsible for it and can just run with it.

Not Google specifically, but one of the FAGMANs. It's only a temp contract so it wasn't as hard as the usual leetcode humiliation ritual that the employees have to go through. It's pretty quiet on the bus usually since most people are doing actual day job work on their work laptops on the bus.

He hated every day, because the bus was overcrowded, full of brownoids who didn't know how to behave on public transport and the bus NEVER was on time. I almost had to kick him out of bed every morning, because he hated it so much. Always said "public transport is collapsing". At one point I got a car and drove him to work every morning and fetched him at noon. Not only was it FUCKING CHEAPER than riding the bus, he also was way more relaxed and good-natured. We moved to a rural area this year and using public transport would literally take an hour for the same route I need 10 minutes by car.
Bottom line: If you live in a rural area, at least in Germany, you *need* a car.

When we moved to that town, twenty years ago, we had the usual number of Turks (pretty okay) and two (TWO!) blacks who worked at the local supermarket. Pretty laid back guys. Quiet and hard-working. Since Merkel's "Wir schaffen das!" (We can do it!) and the following mass immigration I felt less and less like living in Germany with every year. Last year it got so bad that we decided to move. Whenever we visit town, we're shocked how many blacks and browns are there.

Anyway, to keep slightly on topic of the thread, here's a simple prototype for a tilesheet I'm working on, nothing spectacular, but its progress, I think. Still very much in the early stages and I'm still learning the ropes of pixel art.

Can confirm. When we lived in said town, we could walk *everywhere*. Sure, we lived right in the middle (and it still was quiet and peaceful), but within 30 minutes walking distance, we had everything we needed.
We now live in another kind of "brown" village (read: pretty right-wing people) and even the two black kids running around in front of our house speak fluent German and play with the other white and brown kids. If browns and blacks don't get the chance to cluster, they integrate pretty well.

idk what genre my game is in lol. I call it an exploration style game, but idk if that's accurate. the games that inspired it are LSD Dream Emulator and Sludge Life.
I do want to make a trailer similar to the LSD Dream Emulator one, which utilizes video synthesis (like pic rel).. Which I can do, because I have the tools for it. But I don't know how to get stuff onto a VHS tape from my PC, and then back onto the PC.
whenever I do that stuff, it's purely on VHS tapes.

Its core defining trait is the use of simulated systems that respond to a variety of player actions which combined with a comparatively broad array of player abilities allow the game to support varied and creative solutions to problems as well as emergent gameplay beyond what has been explicitly designed by the developer.

Spectre himself would say that Deus Ex was a failure as an immersive sim and that it was more of a goal to strive for than a realistic endpoint at the time.
The idea was setting up an environment and the systems within it to allow for emergent gameplay opportunities to occur.
You don't script anything. All the interactions occur because of the rules you defined for the simulation.
In that regard, Thief 2 is actually a better IS than Deus Ex is.

Study the four basic aspects of music
>Harmony
The 12 musical notes, A to G and their sharps and flats, repeat at higher and lower pitches.
A musical Key is made up of 7 of the 12 available notes. You write songs in a Key, using said chosen notes.
Notes go above other notes to form chords. Each chord has an emotional characteristic. The chords that make up any given Key establish the emotional landscape of that Key. Put chords one after the other to tell an expressive story.

>Melody
The notes that form Chords are the Voices of a piece. 3-4 voices is typical. As chords play out, each Voice should have its own linear melody that plays out through time.
Typically the highest-pitched Voice is the main melody. As you arrange chords in sequence, you want the notes of each Voice to form its own melody.
Repeat and vary melodic motifs to create interest.

>Rhythm
Easy to understand.

>Instrumentation
Extremely complex, the best book on it is like 400 pages.
Basically, stick to established instrumentation conventions (Jazz trio, guitar+bass+drums, etc.) and it will sound fine. You need a LOT of knowledge to put together unusual instrument combos well.

Compose according to your ideals. Expressive output is a good thing to follow, if you can't think of anything else. That is, when you write music, write it according to "Does this express the feeling I want it to express."

Keep to simple pieces at the start. You'll figure out how to stretch into more complex things later.

The biggest and best thing to learn right out of the gate are ARPs and Pads since they do a good chunk of the work. Depending on what game you are making, you don't need anything more than that. A horror game for example really only needs heavily slowed down pads with sound effects insidiously hidden inside to make the player's mind believe something is happening when they hear it in the music for gaslighting for example.

Let it happen. Do that shit. It'll either not be an issue... or it will, and then you learn how to refactor. It's better to understand best practices from experience than just because someone told you. Also, a lot of best practices are just taste. The "programmer" role acts as the final line of defense between shipping or not shipping in a game jam. Any task that anyone other role fails to do ends up falling onto the programmers. Most people who join game jams are shitters and so what ends up happening is that 90%+ of the workload falls to the "programmers" because no one actually knows how to do their job, especially not the organizer/leader.

i think the average gamer actually has extremely low standards and the only reason so many indie games struggle to reach their performance goals is because the developers are too scared of negative feedback to promote their games, leaving their games in obscurity for only indie game enthusiasts with extremely high standards as a result of overexposure to these sorts of games to play and review them, ironically resulting in poor sales and reviews

you are fully capable of persisting with complex systems and mechanics if you put effort into ensuring the learning process for these systems is enjoyable
you can create your dream game, fully to your vision, and design it in a manner where you feel no fear when promoting it to a large audience in regards to them not understanding the appeal of the game premise or bouncing off of the game due to confusion or a lack of motivation

with the games i see being played and received positively after large promotion campaigns, i would disagree
the astronomical quality standards only appeal for games that are underpromoted and thus are only played by hardened gaming veterans with rigid standards
my point is that the more you promote your game, the less good it needs to be to receive praise
once your exposure surpasses the indie enthusiast steam lurking autist sphere, it enters the community of blissful normies, who support whatever their friends support
it takes a masterpiece to achieved 50 reviews on steam with no shilling
but blatant slop can achieve 10,000 reviews if it breaks contamination and reaches the normie audience

the difficulty really was not linear at all, it got easier sometimes, sometimes it got hard, etc
maybe try to make more recognizable levels, even just numbering them would help
that's my feedback. cool concept though.

>Normal, healthy, well-adjusted people aren't afraid to promote their games.
perhaps not to the extent which i assumed they were, but i do believe many games are severely underpromoted, and the only possible explanation for this would be laziness or anxiety
spending multiple years making a game that you're genuinely proud of, just for your promotion "campaign" to be sending out 20 half-baked emails and making a couple low effort social media posts, indicates that there is something stopping the developer from trying harder to let more people know their game exists
what would be the cause of this phenomenon?
why are indie devs so incompetent at promotion?
if my autistic anxiety-laden self projection, is false, what else would be the cause? laziness?

You're a retarded naive underaged coping nodev. Advertising is an entire profession in of itself with just as much skill and domain knowledge required as any other gamedev skill. Promotion material doesn't magic itself out of thin air. Gamedevs have to spend time and effort in making it. That's time and effort that could otherwise be spent elsewhere, such as making a better game. After all, 90% of marketing is the product. Go and make Pong before you post here again you dumb fucking nigger.

the ultimate question is, if the benefit of developing your marketing, advertising, and promotion skills will allow for more people to enjoy your game, and for your game to make satisfactory revenue, why do more indie developers not invest the necessary time and effort into learning these skills as well?
it seems completely foolish to be in love with the process of making games, but to completely ignore the process of ensuring people actually play them
does it not?
if you care about making money from your games, then you'll agree with me
and if you don't care about making money from your games, then you'll see no issue with extending the completion date of your final product by spending the necessary time to ensure your game is enjoyed by as many people as possible
jobbydevs care about marketing because it makes them more money
hobbydevs care about marketing because it allows them to share their passion with more people
are you telling me there's a subsection of developers who enjoy creating games, but have zero desire for anybody to ever play them?
you just make a game, dump it on steam (and not itch, for some reason?), and leave it?
all that time and effort spent for <30 people to play your game, because you completely neglected the marketing/promotion component?
i really don't understand that mindset
do you not want people to play your games?
