And we don't see the fight itself, and while half of the fights with the demon gods in those gates were skipped, the others who had their fights skipped (Vegeta and Chamel) did get some focus at different points. IIRC Goten is captured during Big Bang Mission and doesn't do much there too... He does however, get a few gags in Ultra God Mission with Super 17, and the little we see of his friendship with Trunks is cute.

IIRC he has it worse in the games. Elder Supreme Kai unlocked his potential, and he was powerful enough to defeat Robelu, but he only had a couple more fights afterwards and hardly did anything in later arcs. Although to be fair to him, Big Bang Mission did start the sidelining of Xeno characters...

I feel she should've gotten some jokes at her expense. Before this the only jokes were some mild embarrassment when Goku asked her for dating advice (Since he's more aware of romance here) and when Yajirobe was fighting Garlic Jr, a vendor accidentally dropped food on her, distracting her, neither of which we've seen.

She was doing that often enough with Maple. In fact too often since Maple at times wasn't serious when she should be.

Reading other mangas and then going back to DB gave me perspective of how much Toriyama knew how to use its time.

For example, the final battle in Jujutsu Kaisen lasted for 40 chapters. In Buu saga, 40 chapters were used to show Fat Buu killing humanity, introducing that sniper, Fat Buu befriending Satan, the sniper shoots the dog and Satan, Evil Buu is born eats Fat Buu, and transforms into Super Buu, he kills the rest of humanity, fights Gotenks, Gohan, Vegetto, gets killed, Kid Buu shows up, destroys Earth, he fights Goku, Vegeta, and Fat Buu, until Kid Buu was killed.

This was insanely eventful, specially compared with JJK where they dealt with the final opponent in one battle that really overstayed its welcome.

Anything that isn’t an ARPG like Kakarot would, while being able to get by just because it’s dragon ball, would still underperform compared to other DB games.

I’d play it, but I’d also play a game based off of Super and Daima, and I’m one more “start at raditz” game away from being okay with a GT centered game. I’ve got Z fatigue.

People say they want adventure but they don't actually want it. DB adventure has always been gay. It has always been shit compared to real adventure stories like Lord of the Rings.

A decent story with great potential, Beerus is better here than in DBS and Nappa gets actual character development. Don’t try to look too hard into it though or you’ll realize, like all anime games with an original story, it’s basically just walking through the anime with different story beats (start off at raditz, watch Frieza kill your friend and get super Saiyan, get ss2 because of cell, etc). And when you finish the story get ready, because they stopped caring about it. It takes months just for them to drop 7 missions where shallot beats mooks or just does that generic shounen mc thing where he gets his ass kicked and gets back up over and over. It’s probably about to end for good.

It’s a PVP game and even the PVE content apart from the story revolves around boosting your stats so you can be more OP in PvP. Not only that, but whenever there’s a new character there’ll be a high chance he’s underwhelming because the only thing that matters is that he’s OP. The new Cooler for instance, could have had an amazing LF where he brought his opponent into that core thing, or he could have gone giant, first game that could have done that to my knowledge, but they got lazy and just combined a green card and a slightly extended blue card from an old unit.

Oh also PvP revolves around the new units, some of them practically play the game for you. You got a good combo going on? Whoops, SS4 Gogeta’s gauge filled up and now it’s gone. Used a blast attack? Uh oh, Majin Vegeta’s gauge was up and he deflected it, stunned you, and if his ultimate’s ready he can screw your whole team up. I could go on but you get the idea.

I’ll always stand by the fact that Legends could be the best modern DB game ever if they stopped relying so much on PvP and actually build up the story. It’s just like heroes and XV where you could pretty much do anything with it and make all sorts of cool what-if interactions and team ups. They do nothing with it

The "Big Green" joke and its derivatives would not exist without the dub it originates from. The problems of TFS do not exist in a vacuum, but are the result of the state of the fanbase in the early 2000s (Goku being a bad father/Piccolo being the "real" dad is a joke/"argument with origins as old as the late 90s), coupled with the popularity of Yugioh Abridged around the same time (and honestly that had a significantly bigger and more immediate negative impact on the series, 4kids staff literally started rewriting GX to include Abridged-tier jokes). Everything listed contributed negatively in some way, more negative in its respective time, than TFS did. Manga vs. anime shit especially still causes problems to this day, mostly on social media sites (but not exclusively).

This series is so fucked up in all of its releases to where there are two distinct censored versions of Kai. Nicktoons Kai censored blood and changed a few minor things. The super censored Kai released somewhere else is where the blue popo comes from.
There is an uncensored Kai. Kai has many distinct versions but the best one is uncensored+ Yamamoto music . Yamamoto music lasts until the end of Namek and then all versions switch to a replacement score some point before or during the android arc.
Z is more fucked up in every release than Kai btw. They always mess something up. Funimation Z is censored at least a bit.

I finished the OG part of Tuffle Quest.

The great:
>Kato's autism of is by far the best thing of the story. She doesn't make connections just because they're cool, but develops them to be part of the world. Miffan is a big example, as Chaozu was its emperor, but left because he was a puppet while others ran the empire, and when Kato introduced Miffan, she did so with the completely nonsensical, but Toriyama favored twist, that Pilaff, somehow, became its emperor.

The good:
>Trip. While I can't say how accurate she is when it comes to buddhism, it's interesting how seriously she takes her vows, and she gets to teach other characters weird powers but without creating another martial arts school, plus it's a nice reference to Sanzo. Her biggest downside is that no jokes are made around her until the very end.
>"Everyone is strong" cliche works here, because the story doesn't make everyone fight at the same time, as characters are available at different times. That comes with its own issues but more on that later.
>Towa is slightly dumbed down, and that benefits her because she's willing to gather allies, most noticeably, Gero, when it comes to making androids. It also shows she can't just make Mira right away and needs years of prototypes such as Magil.
>Launch was an interesting take. She did train to become stronger, but also both sides eventually started communicating with each other, first by notes, later via telepathy that Maple taught them telepathy. It's too bad she was just another character hanging out in the background at some point
>Power levels are nerfed. Something like say, 10000 vs 13000 is a difficult but not one sided matchup, which puts more emphasis on skill. At times it was too nerfed however.
>A the end, Konpei is used to introduce ki mastery, with humans having more affinity with ki regeneration. This is a decent way to keep them below saiyans in Z, while still giving humans a way to fight that isn't just "Raioten for everyone"

The mediocre:

It's only around chapter 39 where they act like siblings for the second time (First one was the "awkward sibling hug" during the 21st tournament). Afterwards they get a few more moments but it feels too little too late
>Acer in general. He's a boring straightman for most of the story, who becomes annoying once the repetitive joke where he teases Maple for having a crush on Goku is implemented

The bad:

King Piccolo arc in particular doesn't have King Piccolo until they kill him, so him killing Roshi and taking over the government aren't shown. King Piccolo also did nothing interesting when fighting. Players made Maple way too self aware when Darkness was messing with her insecurities, so there was no conflict.
>The first chapters are really rough. Too many TFS references and Joss Whedon style of dialogue where characters point out how weird Earth is.
>Piccolo's villainous phase is not interesting. Kato writes him like a grumpy kid trying too hard, and Maple treats him that way too.
>The point of view is exclusive to Maple, so any plot development will only happen if she's around. This means anyone not teaming up with her is not doing anything important. This specially screwed over Krillin.
>Krillin and Bulma are very sidelined. Krillin is no longer Goku's best friend, which reduced him to tournament matches and teaching non-androids 17 and 18, and we don't see him act as their teacher that much. Bulma has almost no jokes around her, so she's only a somewhat arrogant scientist who Maple hangs out with to build something.

So in short, the OG parts started rough, but it did improve into a fun enough adventure. It has a bunch of issues, but it's also a passion project, and there are decent developments around Earth that makes it special when it comes to their usage of ki. There are also other points I couldn't include because I didn't want to make too many posts about it like how Kato occasionally emulates well Toriyama's style of humor (Although I still don't like that Bulma was barely included in such moments). All in all, it has rough spots, writing issues, TFS dialogue, but it also was passionate, had decent development of the world, curveball twists, so it was still rather fun.

I want a DB CRPG, goddammit. Kingmaker would be a GREAT format / structure for a OG DB adventure.

Some pretty fair assessments, matches a lot of things I've both liked and taken issue with as a player of the Quest. I do still feel like some things like the escalating PLs could have been toned back a bit, it's very "Xenoverse" at times with the kinds of increases they get. It's not like it is without justification within the setting, it uses ideas at least actually present and doesn't hog all of it to just one character, but my preference would see things scaled back just a bit. The move sponge nature of Maple resulting in her feeling like a XV1/2 CaC at times could also have been scaled back, or at the very least I'd like to have seen more things use that as a jumping off point to develop skills more (there's a moment later in the Z section where Gohan and Peppa are asked to try sharing skills, and instead of just sharing skills they also share share IDEAS for skills for each other to try out, and I would have liked more of that).

The Quest protagonist exclusive viewpoint is definitely a detriment at times, but it did start to get better later on, even if I'd have liked more (like the thing where Acer and Chichi travel together and get the Masamune could've been a whole thread on its own). There is a lot of improvement on these things, which is notable to me when I consider the OG Dragon Ball portion of the Quest happened over the course of like four months of threads in real time. In contrast Z (Raditz to Raichi) took three years and was kinda juggled between Tuffle Quest and a Zelda one she started up after Kato started to go through a bit of writing burnout (and I think some health issues?) after like halfway through Z.

On the more positive side the worldbuilding is definitely a highlight, and it being used as an actual story tool instead of background dressing was always good to see. Not just that there's a bit of lore that will connect some things together, but that it's actually setup for a thing that happens later (the pirate cave dating back to King Piccolo's time, or the pure-hearted Saiyans that tried to stop King Vegeta being there for Goku learning to control the Oozaru state and also Yazai getting introduced properly later). Even when it's a bit more referential it's still usually based in something tying back to Dragon Ball (like characters developing skills after watching Gundam shows, or Godzilla and Gamera showing up through their connection to Arale resulting in an eventual fight against Godzilla using the Kamehameha).

I also find the idea that in spite of the absurd gains he got Goku was actually held back a bit during the Quest, but how that's actually a net positive overall, to be interesting. That (Path to Power) Goku would've kept growing at an accelerated rate even beyond what he was in the movie, but in the process didn't have as many people that could match him and that caused him to be more reckless trying to find strong foes to fight, ultimately resulting in him unlocking Super Saiyan against King Piccolo and Shura but causing the obvious problems that'd result in the process, is an interesting take for one of those "what if" scenarios. If anything feels like it's a reaction to Vegeta one-shotting his way through earlier Dragon Ball in DB Sai, or how so many of those similar "what if" stories featuring Goku going Super Saiyan that early somehow keep trying to make things go back on the rails of canon.

Even if I wasn't exactly convinced with it at first (and some players were definitely just going along with it for meme reasons), I do actually like how Goku and Maple's relationship progressed. It's slow but built up sensibly enough that I didn't hate them ending up together, and I'll even admit to finding a handful of moments cute. There's enough of a balance between them that I can at least see why they'd like each other. They make for some fun parents too.

On a final note, I do like how some ideas set up so early in the Quest do get some interesting payoff way, way later. The Black Star Dragon Ball and Baby arcs of Tuffle Quest Kai might be some of my favorite arcs of the whole Quest, and yet their setup happened way back in the OG portion (Baby getting mentioned by Maple and Acer's first teacher, Jaco checking with Bulma on a Black Star Dragon Ball the Galactic Patrol found in space). Lot of commitment to see something like that through.

Yeah more actual discussions and training would've been nice. Whenever Maple learned new things or taught someone, it was all described very vaguely. Maple as Chuu Lee's master only improved after training since they go to interact and Maple gave her some advice, but during the training itself we only got "Maple taught Chuu Lee, and because of rolls, Chuu Lee learned fast!", and a lot of training sessions were like that.

I even found a little ironic when it comes to how she handled training. Roshi training Goku and Krillin in the manga was very good, but pretty forgettable in Tuffle Quest. Korin training Goku in the manga was mediocre because Korin didn't really teach Goku anything, only made him stronger, while in Tuffle Quest he gave everyone extra advice beyond "You waste too much movement".

Acer even mentions he dealt with Magil during it. How Acer and Chichi dealt with someone that much stronger is something that could be shown. I also liked that Roshi taugh Godzilla the kamehameha as a deal for him to keep watch of the fountain of youth once in a while. And he asked that because Roshi accidentally killed the immortal Phoenix... A throwaway joke from the manga expanded into another joke to explain why Godzilla knows the kamehameha.

While we don't see much of it, the way Baba describes it has a tragic tone. Goku killing King Piccolo, indirectly killing Kami, and that causing Earth to lose its dragon balls, and he had to travel to Namek by himself, does all make Goku into more of a loner.

I can see that being a response to Sai, and what she briefly described of that timeline, it changing the circumstances around Goku so logically, and actually killing off Kami, something Sai Vegeta somehow didn't do, just makes Sai look that much blander in comparison, and it was already bland.

It's even funny that both Sai and Tuffle Quest have a character who's a bit too serious for the setting, but Vegeta was just boring, while Trip being a more stern buddhist looks novel when around sillier characters. Helps she was friendly too.

Yeah the pace was really damn fast all things considered. There are still moments where she fell back on old habits but she did at least actually try with it.

It also helps that part of her character arc was learning to be less extremely stoic and serious and more open to accepting some of the quirks of the setting. I think there's a point in Z where Pantea has her try out some videogames, with her being absolutely terrible at them but being able to find the humor in that.

If that happened, that'd be surprising. The impression I got early on Acer is that he was doomed from the start. Actually on that note, it's kinda funny looking back because our Gohan had a lot more clear setup as an equal to his sister and even a slight... I wouldn't quite say "bias" or "preference" but maybe "lean" toward him, even if we ended up playing as her in the specials. Gohan still got plenty of important moments and wasn't quite as much a sidekick. His future counterpart especially was very much the leader of his group and had a good deal more of a "protagonist" vibe, while Peppa's counterpart, when we did hear about her, sounded much more flawed and having to try harder to catch up to him.

If there is one impression I got from OG part of Tuffle Quest is that Kato doesn't know how to write teenagers, period. Her being a chick affects things, but more so at the start. Which of the twins is the protagonist? The girl one (And you couldn't choose Acer). Who Maple spoke with the most initially? Chichi. Who got the most character development for a long time? Launch. It's naturally easier to write the sex you're most comfortable with, and even then everyone else was sidelined in favor of Goku eventually anyway, and she threw a curveball by developing Chaozu as well.

I'm also not sure her incapacity of writing teenagers is because of autism, or just because of it. I feel it's because of lack of writing experience. It's harder to come up with flaws and write a character around them, compared to writing a simple, blander character. compare Maple in the first chapters with her around chapter 12. Early Maple is TFS Nappa but later she's more of a hyperactive kid who doesn't try to say as many "funny" lines, that feels more like a natural writing evolution of someone getting the character's voice.

The Black Star Dragon Ball wish doesn't just de-age Goku, it brings his memories back to when he was that old too. They aren't entirely gone, but everything beyond the Pilaf arc is a hazy blur. Goku as a result is doing this both to save the Earth and try to get his memories back. His body still has considerable strength but his skills, transformations, and everything else he has to work for to relearn. This is an actual nerf so he has to work more for his victories, but also makes him more active and personable, and considerably funnier.

This drastically shifts his relationships with Trunks and Pan. Trunks put in the position of someone who's actually trying to help Goku remember things, but it's filtered through what he's heard from his mother, father, best friend, and Gohan, leading to some fun comedic moments but also Trunks getting a better idea on who the person of Goku is and was through some contrasts. Pan on the other hand is given more complicated feelings about Goku, at times feeling like she's a babysitter as she tries to present herself as more mature than him and is critical of his "childish behavior", but also learning that her desire to "grow up" so quickly isn't really all that it's cracked up to be given how sometimes Goku's more "simple, childish" behavior can help save the day better. Things like getting the Dragon Ball out of the giant's tooth for example, could see Trunks and Pan thinking there's some big fight they have to go through to get it, only for Goku to casually ask what's wrong with the giant, revealing the tooth and Goku blasting it out.

Also Goku not being the immediate "strongest" (because he can't use all his power yet) also gives Baby reason to seek out the Saiyan he thinks is the strongest out of all of them currently, Vegeta. Can also double down on the contrasts between Baby and Goku, with him showing the simple but caring monkey kid that was taught to be kind by his Grandpa contrasting Baby's vengeance schemes.

You could honestly make an entire game about a Dragon Ball hunt. Hell, the Ultimate Tenkaichi CaC mode was basically one.

Inconsistencies can be really obnoxious, but imo, a story has to be engaging first. A story with no plot holes but is the fun equivalent of watching a snail crawl in slow motion is not worth it. That isn't to say inconsistencies don't ruin stories, as they can rob the emotional impact of specific scenes...
