Not really. SOTO gives you weapon mastery which allows you to use elite spec-specific weapons (for example, you could use a greatsword as a core necro, scourge or harbinger). It opens up a lot of build versatility but is absolutely not required.
Janthir Wilds gives land spear, which is the only weapon that can be wielded by every class. Also absolutely not worth it.

Play what you want. Reaper is braindead retard core so if you want to do that, go for it. Remember you can always go to the pvp lobby as a level 2 character and try out the various specs immediately, see what you like. Since you have HoT, PoF and EoD unlocked I assume that means all the elite specs should be available to you.

There's a number of symptoms of basically the same bug that gets fixed by unofficial extras, and that's one of them. It sounds like that anon gets basically the same thing I do: If I make small adjustments to the camera while holding right-click, the cursor will sometimes just randomly have moved like 8 inches across my monitor after releasing the right-click when I only physically moved my mouse in a way that would have moved the cursor 1-2 inches if I hadn't touched my RMB. It pretty much makes the game unplayable on any spec/build that uses ground-targeting, and often does lead to just clicking windows outside the game on other displays.

Closest to you chronologically are Heart of Thorns events, they are very popular still. The most fun imo is End of Dragons last map meta, sadly it takes too long for rewards you get and people do it way less these days. Icebrood saga ones are daily profitable. Obscure metas will continue being run because you make legendary armor there. Since you like that "army running around" feel, Silverwastes and Drizzlewood are two maps that are in constantly repeated meta state, where you need to capture bases, do events, protect caravans and culminate in a boss/siege.
If you ever get Heroes Choice chest from metas it's almost always best to pick Amalgamated Gemstones, they cost 1-2 gold each

Playing DDO the past couple of weeks has really made me miss the intricate, deep dungeons of MMOs of the past, and how now they're just straight forward hallway simulators. 1. you can negate the backfire with traits

IMO ANet could've gone all in with the risk vs reward theme and dialled up to eleven the backfire mechanic. Like, think every time you risk a backfire your risk of getting one in the next 30 s increases by a set percentage, but your skills are also much more effective when you don't trigger a side effect.
Let's take Stone Summit Cannon for example: normally, it shoots a shell on a target area dealing damage and burning. If it backfires, you have 2 seconds to GTFO before it explodes on your ass, hurting you as well as any enemies.
Now let's make it so there are three tiers of risk that increase the likelihood of a backfire and influence the effect of this skill if you use it during cooldown:
>tier 1: larger area and weakness, backfire chance +15%
>tier 2: larger area, cripple and weakness along with more damage and +1 stack of burning, backfire chance +25%
>tier 3: same as above, backfire chance +35% AND the skill can backfire while out of cooldown, too (chance is a fixed 25%)
If you trigger a backfire you can still escape the area within two seconds, and your risk resets to 0 so it's not completely unfair and you have an incentive to keep gambling to either build up your risk and deal more damage, or trigger a side effect and remove all risk stacks.
Then let's make it even nuttier by allowing core skills to also have a (skill family-based) backfire, so e.g. all Deceptions can backfire and give you blindness, revealed and slow, but only if your risk tier is 2 or higher.
Let's also change Scoundrel's Luck from

Antiquary looks like shit and the only people I see defending it are doing so out of trite contrarianism.
Prolific Plunderer (One more artifact use per plunder) and Exhilarating Ephemera (increased damage after artifact use) are complete lock-ins.
For Grandmaster, either Prodigious Pincher (auto-steal on initative use) or Combat High (damage boost after stealing) are also going to be lock-ins, because they're just two different types of damage boost.
That's literally all the spec is: you steal more often and stealing is your source of a damage self-buff.
You won't even look at what artifacts you get because all they actually are are a 10 second damage boost with a frustrating variation in cast speed and animation lock.
Double-edges are even more brainless because they're either always-good to use twice, pass or fail, because the backfires are still a net-gain, or they're literally-never good to use twice, because the downsides are a net-loss. There's no chance, you just don't do it.

Bought all the expansions. Haven't played gw2 since vanilla and I have three 80-boosts to use. What are the top three most fun greatsword/spear classes in the game?

it's very straight forward and as far as i'm aware, there are two main builds, one using mace (with that relic that heals upon explosive combo finishers, 3rd skill), one using scepter (which gives you a single target tether which, when charged, let's you teleport to your target and grant shields to 5 people).
goes without saying, mace fucking sucks and so does scepter, but scepter sucks a little less and provides good use if you bind a key to setting and targeting a personal target (since having a key bound to finding the next friendly target like tab does for an enemy target, you might also unironically target a friendly guard or even a fucking supply cache... thanks anet).
staff as secondary weapon set always, but it's very situational and mostly for emergencies to either save your ass or have quick cc available. the heal on 4th skill is ok but mogged by just spamming first alliance (blue) skill.
otherwise, idk, there isn't really much to learn about that build, i play it a lot and mostly in guild raids, and never had a problem with it. most skills make it obvious in what situation you use them.

Ranger spear is serviceable and does comparable dmg to other weapons, but very bland and boring to play. btw to use spears you'll need to start and play Janthir Wilds expansion for a bit, can't use them by default.
I also recommend distancing yourself from GW1 mindset. You'll be very disappointed, if you go in looking for similar experience and comparing these two games.

You missed the point when GW2 was the most enjoyable it ever was. HoT "first time through" gradually unlocking gliding and solving the "map puzzles" was a really wonderful experience. It made the jungle feel so alive, and the emergent story as you slowly worked your way through from point to point, camp to camp, taking the map events and metas in progressive fashion, was the best this game's story ever was (better than the actual single player "main story").

It's unfortunate that you cheated yourself out of this experience. Ah well. Not everyone gets to experience the peaks, and this game had few enough of them sadly. One unquantifiable thing that defines classic or at least semi-modern MMO gaming is that it really is a series of amazing "you had to be there" moments.

Honestly greatsword is a kind of shitty weapon on every single class. Oh, it's strong enough and "meta" on some, but it just rarely feels genuinely GOOD to use across all 5 skill slots available to any given class.

The mobility of 3 and 5 are great, but 100B is an insult to GW1 and one of the most annoyingly boring skills to use in the game. Self-rooting long animation skills are gay. Zerker burst is fairly nice but its adrenaline re-up is inferior, making the most ideal aoe strike burst build just swapping to another weapon.

Most of your damage comes from cooming on the ground and spinning in it. Never really feels like a sword, just a blue particle energy dump.

>Ranger
Medium build+mobile GS is a kind of fun idea, but the 3 is one of the most easily breakable skills in the game, and the "bear" thing on 2 literally every 5 seconds gets old fast.

Unquestionably one of the most powerful GS builds, but like Guardian doesn't really feel like you're "using a sword" so much as barfing out green energy.

Games come about because investment firms who don't give a shit about games analyze the market and decide whether they'd be worth sinking tens/hundreds of millions of dollars into. We do not live in the MMO era anymore. That ship has sailed and passed over the horizon. No investor is going to think "oh yeah I bet we'd turn a massive profit funding hundreds of developers/artists to create an aging boomer genre game to appeal to aging boomer gooners who stand around and drain server resources and post cringe reddit quips. Existing MMOs that continue to run do so because by momentum they're just barely deemed profitable enough to continue squeezing what's left of the remaining assets. And even then they can be profitable, but not enough to avoid sunsetting. Look at City of Heroes. It was still "making money", but it just wasn't worth it as a long term investment for NCSoft anymore. The barrier to creating a new IP is WAY, WAY higher than persisting an existing one. No "GW3" is ever going to come out in this era, unless it's a low effort single-player/asynchronous mobile slop tapper game outsourced to China/India using AI assets. Which is conceivable.

Guild Wars is a prime candidate for that since y'know, the first game was exactly that. Guild Wars 3 will likely be a return to form and they'll make it because they can sell the game for $70, expansions every year for $50 and all the MTX they already sell in the gem store.
