Realized something genius about Dragon Quest's design
so in the first game, they start you out in the king's room where he exposits to you and tells you about one of the major goals to beat the game
However, the room is locked, so you can't exactly get out right away
The king suggests you to take a look at the chests
So you press A and open the chests, and one of the items in the chests is a key
Basically, the game teaches you how to interact with objects and get loot, and it's also a subtle "gate" where you have to "practice" the interaction to progress

Hey guys it's me the Cyberfall Dev been a hot minute

Can't remember if my last update was pre project corruption but that's fixed now

Some changes to the game, going for more of a VTMB style world setup after having played a lot of Skyrim and Morrowind then realizing proc-genned towns are overrated. Having control over where the things are placed lets me do things like have special features like bridges or changes in height in the cities a lot easier however this means the hub cities are going to be way scaled back, planning only 1 hub area for each of the 3 cities now.

Dungeons also being reworked from the daggerfall 3D labyrinth spaghetti pile to a very simple 'maze' on a 3x3 grid, aside from being pretty sure that the plugin for the dungeons was causing the corruption the 3D labyrinth style just wasn't fun, FPS games play a lot faster and with the exception of trying to learn to make a map there wasn't any consistent, diegetic way I could keep the player from getting lost so now dungeons are just smaller arenas directly stitched without unpredictable hallways looping around. I'll still try to keep some vertical gameplay

Wanted to get an alpha release this month but time is moving fast, the quest system *does* work, I do need to translate some things since dungeons are not in the same area as quests anymore and make sure it works without bugs but hopefully soon meow meow

Legitimate multi-million dollar idea fellas... A cozy farming game full of written hardcore smut. The ultimate women's videogame. The book world is already swamped with porn, but most coomer videogames are just made for men, relying mostly on visuals, women prefer to read their porn.

I played path of achra and it has a really weird balancing where the game plays itself and it's hard to make a bad build since you don't have real choices up to the later stages where you get instant killed if you don't pass the DPS checks, but the run took less than 5min so you don't feel like the game wasted your time even with bad rng, it's pretty good

certain object tags and layers will get one version of the outlines (the pumpkin head girl now has the colorful aura outlines), and then everything else in the scene will receive the standard outlilnes (black lines, no wiggly effect or noise)
However, for the effect to work, the meshes that receive the colorful aura outlines will be an outline only, the mesh will not be drawn.

Now that this is done, I can go back to working on my game because one of the levels needed this effect. Also it works in volume profiles now, which is cool.

Finally got the new text rendering working, poor kerning is a thing of the past. Some layout stuff obviously needs fixing but I'm happy that the text actually looks right now.
Still using freetype, but with harfbuzz actually rustybuzz for shaping and positioning which seems to have improved things.
Also had an issue with gamma correction that was affecting the previous text rendering too, so the subpixel stuff in general just looks way better now.

I actually tried parley at first (or I guess, second or third), I couldn't get it to do what I want.
cosmic_text doesn't have subpixel rendering support and seemed like a bit much for what I wanted - I want to be able to just load ttf files and draw those, I don't need a fancy font fallback scheme that pulls stuff from the OS.
Subpixel rendering in particular is something I find important and part of the reason I stopped using unity in the first place - it just doesn't do small text well at all.

iirc the OS fallback isn’t even intelligent at all, it just goes for some commonly installed fonts or so. I had AI explain to me the other day (so it might be wrong) how a program like Firefox figures out which font to use so that CN characters and everything can be rendered if needed. And that process is on a whole nother level of sophistication than what you will get from a random ass rust crate. Because, the thing is: While the OS usually supplies a way to list/discover fonts, there is no OS setting at all that says "write Chinese glyphs with font X." There is, to my understanding, not even an OS setting that says "prefer using font X generally." At least not consistently over Windows/Linux/OSX.

Oh, man. In Unity, the callback function for a toggle button has to receive a bool as an argument or else. It makes your object's fields all null if you don't do this. Found a cool way to make buttons click in Godot. I implemented a "ClickyButton" class that extends Button and connected the pressed signal to a function that chooses 1 of 3 click sound effects at random to play, then used that for all of my buttons. I think it's a flexible enough concept that you can tie it to any genre you want. You mention "combat" but personally I'm less interested in any kind of entity and I more like the geometry/space component.
Tying that to a platformer is straightforward enough. Kinda loses the horror element but you could go for something like Little Nightmares (assuming that doesn't count as narrative in your book).
I think you can make a puzzle game out of it, and I mean proper puzzles, not the not the time fillers you get in most narrative/survival horror games.
Could make a friendslop game where you and a couple people have to use various tools to recognize how the structure is changing and to strengthen the current order.
I think a rhythm game could be done pretty naturally too. Create rhythms for how things change and it would be really easy to come up with cool visuals. Think Thumper but less abstract.
