In the games and the bios, Sonic is often described as "like the wind". This is a metaphor which means he's free, he's not tied down by relationships or group allegiances.
"Windnic" is a distinction created by fans of media like Archie, where Sonic is in relationships and resistance groups. They believe "Windnic" (SegaSonic) is boring and should act more like your average teenager instead of a paragon who inspires others through example.

Boom failed because SEGA had agreed to develop 3 Sonic games for the Wii U. They had already done Lost World and Olympics, but to save money they decided to take "Sonic Synergy" (which was basically completed at this point) and forced Big Red Button to port it. Originally it was a spiritual Jak 4, with multiplayer, RPG elements, and big open levels. Sega's decision pretty much forced the studio to hack it apart to run on the Wii and pretty much killed them.

Everything else, the comics, the movies, the cartoons, they're all derivatives that exist solely because the games were and are successful.
