Walking down the Hollywood level in VTMB while I was really depressed and lonely and this game was like an amplifier for those feelings. I will always remember the first time playing through it, the politics, the sadness, the ambience, nothing I can put my finger on but that's when it clicked.

Gigazoomer who got into the genre with Underrail thanks to Sseth's video here. It was a combination of the atmosphere, exploration and the indepth character building. I didn't know I was such a big autistic number cruncher until I started playing these kinds of games.

There aren't that many super standout moments from VTMB. It's more of a continuous experience.

Meeting Jeannette ranks pretty highly. The contemplative cab drive at the end is a moment where you really reflect on everything that happened so far. The haunted hotel is iconic. Being confronted by the girl from your past is sudden and makes you feel like you've sacrificed some part of your humanity when you have to send her away.

At first the "program your own AI" thing made me want to jump off a building because the defaults are shit and badly need changing unless you want to micromanage everything but it's kinda cool now that I'm used to it and have more slots. Except it doesn't, because things don't play out in real time in turn-based. On your turn you pull off your fireball before anyone can get into your threat range, and then that's it. Real time is a much more fluid and dynamic game where you ironically need to micromanage way more and better than you ever do in turn based.

I don't like crpgs as a genre that much, I just like specific games that are crpgs. KOTOR2 was my gateway drug, though. I didn't have any other 3d RPGs as a kid so it was pretty cool going on a pretty immersive Star Wars adventure even without understanding any of the game's systems.

What does that even mean? I've put over 1,400 hours on a game with a 57 hour campaign. I've put over 3,000 hours on a game with a 50-60 hour campaign and maybe 100 hours of sidequests. Those are both extremes, yet it's not like I haven't put hundreds of hours on shorter games. Are you simply incapable of replaying a game? Do you mean you need 100 hours of base campaign, or campaign plus sidequests? Or do you mean, by the time you've had your fill replaying the game you've hit 100 hours?

From what I remember following the development history, Dragon Age 4 started as a smaller more reactive RPG “Project Joplin” and a secondary Dragon Age live service game being developed took its place after Joplin died in development hell.

The live service dragon age game had a much more cartoony Marvel-movie art style because the microtransaction live service game tone was way less serious. This ended up becoming Dragon Age 4: Dreadwolf/Veilguard after the devs got nervous seeing other live service games fail.

Then after Forspoken crashed, the devs got even more scared because it was close to their vision of Veilguard, and tried to work in more RPG elements and change the tone at the last stretch. By this point it was a marvel movie dragon age game because the art director of the live service game was now the lead director due to development hell tomfoolery and bleeding devs daily.

They had a bad feeling about the final game but hoped the BG3 success, modern DnD audience and “BioWare Magic” would save them. At this point they knew this was a far departure from even Inquisition. They were all screwed by bad design choices from the top.

I remember politely saying some complaints about the setting’s tone to the Veilguard devs on bluesky and they even liked my posts. They knew.

Dragon Age: The Veilguard (the title suggests some squad of superbozos, further insulting the franchise it stands upon) fumbles in its cartoonish and adolescent image, becoming cheap spectacle for the masses while better stories embrace with seriousness the infinite possibilities found in fantasy. If this new "BioWare" is content in shamelessly chasing trends the way Amazon commercialized Tolkien with The Rings of Power, it is certainly their call, but it might also be their last stunt. Self-respecting fantasy fans would rather play Baldur's Gate 3, the LotR of video games.

For one thing, it never ages well, so when games lean on it heavily to be the single thing that their game offers it will not stand the test of time. Secondly, I just do not give a single shit about most 'cinematic experiences' in videogames. I'm not here to watch a movie and when I see some elaborate 'kill shot animation' or something, all I'm thinking is 'great how many times will I have to sit through this' Some of the older post-6 Final Fantasy games for instance.

BG2 on its own for me does beat BG3, but I don't think it beats WotR for me. I much prefer BG1+BG2 though, as it's really just one story broken up into two parts. And BG1+2 vs WotR is close and I'm not sure which one "wins", there's no natural Total Order to impose anyhow.

Is a non-pyro warrior->executioner build any good?

I tried a non-pyro bladedancer->executioner build, and this shit feels waaaaaay too strong even without pyro stuff. The bleed damage alone is insane.

I’m looking for a good melee build with good survivability and damage, but not THAT good, i don't want to delete bosses in one round like it happened with Aurora.

Kingmaker is lower stakes and it's more about comfy adventuring through the wood. Wrath is a high stakes, extremely high power level adventure thanks to the addition of Mythic Paths. Wrath also made a ton of quality of life improvements that make it somewhat hard to go back to Kingmaker.
