If portal couldn't be stopped then they would be T0-T1 right now. The issue is that they CAN be stopped and you can steal the board back from them.
Portal always had trouble dealing with big boards and always has to burn a ton of resources to kill them. Or just lose on the spot if they don't have said resources.

It depends on the deck. Aggro decks like evoing purely for the damage boost to swing face. But in a lot of other decks, in general terms often evo points are better used to achieve board control. The added rush effect allows a follower that normally would be stuck doing nothing for a turn to immediately swing and remove a threat. It's not uncommon for the first person who runs out of evo points to be the person that loses.

Take the following with a grain of salt, but in broad general terms it is often preferable to make a play that can answer the opponent's board without needing to expend an evo point. That keeps your options open for the future to use evo points as a get out of jail card. However keep in mind what your own board state is going to look like at the end of your turn. You don't want to simply answer the opponent's stuff. You want to answer it AND present something that they must answer. So if spending the evo point answer the opponent's board while presenting a threat that they must answer, then that can be preferable than an evo-less play that answers the opponent's board but doesn't leave much on the board to threaten them.

The absolute, most fun thing about this event was the lack of rune players. The few runes I went up against were pure dirt, which is completely fine.
