A sonic series that’s a mix of the movies, Sonic X and Avengers EMH in terms of story telling.

The whole reason ST felt the need to redesign Sonic is because they always intended for Sonic to feel cool and shonen from the start, and they felt like the current designs weren't portraying that properly. The only reason the split ever existed was because certain fans weren't able to see what was right in front of them, and ironically managed to prove Naka right.

Because starting with Sonic 4: Episode one, advertising for the Sonic franchise was practically non-existent in Japan. Sega knew that the Sonic series mostly sold better in the west, so they decided to fully invest in the western market while leaving the japanese market and it's commununity to die.
This is why Sega hired Pontaff and the whole reason for Sonic Boom existence. It's only just recently with Frontiers is that Sega is finally giving the japanese market some attention, especially how the 2010s was considered "dogshit" to them.

Sonic Team created Sonic's original design believing that it properly portrayed the cool dude with a good heart vibe they were going for, only to later realize that other people didn't pick up on their intention. Sonic wasn't shonen originally. There's nothing shonen about Classic Sonic beyond the superforms. The origin story for Sonic establishes that the classic games' stories were children's books. The classic games did have a more lighthearted tone and the choice for non verbal storytelling was deliberate despite Sonic himself talking in the manuals and stuff.

What happened is Adventure is that they felt that the classic designs got stale and they wanted to give Sonic a more timeless look. Also classic Sonic's design didn't communicate his coolness very well. So they decided to update the designs and make them more energetic and fluid. That's it.

Maybe they just didn't want Sonic CD to be too much of a departure from Sonic 1 knowing they were going to make another Mega Drive game, or maybe they didn't have the resources (time/money) to have some serious voice acting. They still gave Sonic some voice acting in the game (which they removed from Origins iirc, one of the things that really shows the difference between classic and modern classic)

I think Sonic Adventure and even Maekawa's games for the most part have the same storytelling and worldbuilding style as what was being attempted in the classic era, which may be called "shonen" since it was made to appeal to boys (regardless of whether it resembles Naruto, I don't think Sonic does either way)
I also think the Classic/Modern split is a good idea because people might want a different flavor of Sonic and there's nothing wrong with making a separate Classic branch

Like Sonic's story in SA1 is very simplistic and direct, but then if you play the other stories you see the motivations of characters like Tails and Amy, you see their motivations, and if you play Gamma you see a "darker" take on destroying Eggman's robots. In SA2 the Hero story never even mentions Maria or Gerald at all, or Shadow's backstory, that stuff is all in the Dark story. Sonic's story is very focused on saving Elise and making her smile, while Shadow and Silver have mental fights with demons and stuff. I have one SatAM AU where Tails is intersex and in my Sonic Union AU Tails is female because he's a composite character with Amy Rose because Sonic Union is compliant with the 'no romance' mandate and having a companion character like Amy who's fixation is romance would detract from the setting. Especially considering her arc could never be fulfilled because of Windnic. It makes for a cleaner narrative if Tails and Amy are the same character in Sonic Union as well as allows me to avoid species repetition and only have one major hedgehog character as part of the cast.
