Layers destroy a cohesive world. Part of the appeal of a Vanilla server is that it's one world. It's one place. If I go somewhere, and you go somewhere, we should see one another and be able to interact with one another with absolute ease.
It breaks immersion seeing people randomly disappear out infront of you because they got layer swapped.
It's annoying and cringe to see people spam, begging for layer swaps so they can try their luck at a different set of spawns, or vendor recipes, or to avoid being pvp'ed despite choosing a pvp realm or mode.
It also means the world ends up being empty. Despite there supposedly being hundreds of people around in Elwynn, I saw like two or three, because the rest are on a different layer. Potential, organic fun won't happen as frequently because the people who could do that are all spliced up into different layers. The core of a game like this is persistence, layering disrupts and breaks that.
