In games with an RPG system where you have a variety of items to choose from to defeat enemies, players would naturally find the one OP skill/item/hero or whatever and just spam it. How do you get around this? I always roll my eyes whenever any game advertises a ton of customization because I know I will find the one combo that works and just use that until end game.

Most players will play with whatever strategy works so long as it continues to work. You can design a game in "phases" where the optimal strategy changes depending on the phase, or you can just accept that not all content you spend time creating will see equal engagement.

the people saying its good want you to get trapped in a shaghetti code nightmare, all thanks to AI. that way, they can release their game and you, the competition, will be too busy asking AI to fix the problems it created

as for the people who say to never use it, they realize that by using AI you'll make really fast progress and might release a game faster. they say not to use AI so that you, their competition, takes a long time to release each game

There's no such thing as the one OP skill/item/hero. Look at orblikes. You can play tons of builds and people love that. No one wants to spam arrows all the time. It can be fun to spam totems instead. It can be fun to become the human torch. It can even be fun to have such high regen and stored up health, that you're always at low HP and able to use special abilities that rely on that.

Some people are going to pick one item or playstyle and stick with it the entire game because it's how they are and it works just well enough that they never run into a brick wall. There are a few ways to discourage this kind of behavior(weapon degradation/characters becoming tired, item limits, damage penalty on combo spamming). The best way is to give them tools with an obvious purpose and set up scenarios that encourage using your entire arsenal, but there are only so many ways you can retard-proof your game without it hurting the overall experience.

9 kings and The King is Watching. For 9 kings, I got to the max level of 99 with one King despite there being many others with their unique skills. And I only ever even bothered to get that far because that was the only goal. It was super fucking laggy too so I had to wait hours for it to calculate all the damage which was probably in the trillions. And for the King is Watching one, again, one King and the basically the same set of skills.

Don't get me wrong, I had fun and got hours of gameplay but it always bugs me that I'm basically locked into playstyle because either there's no point to switching or I don't want to bother "levelling" the others up.

I'm still not 100% on any of my palettes, but it's easy enough to change because everything uses the same texture format/layout
I'm also working on an editor that'll let me create and then drop-in gradient textures which will then overwrite the current texture palette. Once that's done it'll be a lot faster to make changes.

One tile in the overworld map represents a 3x3 grid of zones, ie screen-size local maps. So on the ground level, you might have to cross as many as 3 screens over before your position in the world map changes.
And in fast travel over the world map, you still walk over tiles one at a time, but when you descend to ground level, you're placed in the center zone of the parasang.

I am already working in the second map, but my efforts right now are in learning the job system for unity, because I need to optimize the code for gravity. Right now having 80 enemies on screen is fine but I want minimum around 200. Enemies are not gonna be complex and will be very basic, I don't want the player surviving the game, I want them to focus on hunting as many demons possible.

The first map is simple intencionally so the player can experiment and digest the gravity system, each map will be more strange and complex than the one before, for now this what I have on my mind:

- Palace of Pride: A simple stage where you can have fun with simple gravity
- Sea of Greed: A big endless double ocean of blood, where you have to hop around to reach other Island/platforms
- Cavers of Sloth: A giant planetoid with a smaller planetoid inside, if you fall inside the smaller planetoid, you will be falling into the giant somehow (I don't know how to explain it well in text)
- Corridors of Lust: Twisted cylindric corridors, the theme is a striptease club, something like the one in persona 4.
- Halls of Gluttony: The gimmick will be portals.
- Starts of Wrath: I will shameless go full mario galaxy with this one, infernal lava planetoids and you jump from one another in a big space.
- Heaven of Envy: Demons posing as angels and trying to imitate paradise. Hardest level combining every gimmick/tech.

And... if I have time I will make a bonus secret stage called Fiend's Castle, based on my first game just for fun.

I wanna keep working on Dungeon Watchers, but I am focusing on Guns and Nuns because I wanna make a nice demo. Originally, this new game was just a test for the Low Poly Day on Newgrounds, but, because I saw a good reaction from the people that played it, I decided to keep working on it.

Question to those who care: How do you choose colours and determine that those you've chosen will look good on a wide variety of monitors, settings and calibrations?
I'm going crazy over here with colours. My monitor is set to higher contrast and darker colours. On the colour palette here I can see the left-most colour as a dark pink, the rest looks black. If I look at the palette on a different monitor, I see four different hues of pink. Obviously, not everyone has the same calibration as the one who chooses colours, so how are you solving that problem? Calibrating your monitor with a Spyder or something to get a neutral setup?

About 700 posts in the week around your posts.
Nodev crabs using AI? AI-related reposts? All of them around your progress? BOOM you're done.
Also, not only are you competing with schizos blogposting, but the entire backlog of AI attention whores that aggydaggy owns :)

Take all the "thread success stories" you can think of in the past 10 years and divide it by the number nodev crabs shitposting about AI (again, 100 posts a day, 3000 a month) and there's your historical likelihood of "having a good thread."

Schizos, crabs shitting progress, nodevs shitposting, no feedback, AND to top it all off: AI shitposts increases over time, so even if your post hit in this "mediocrity lottery" you'll have to do it all over again in a couple posts.

I designed it as a short of risk-reward mechanic for the normal combo.

Another playtest session that fizzled out into a depressive whimper.
But I am not worried.
They were just playing in a world without content after all, now that I have essentially all systems that make up the game finished it's time to actually make the game, so that's why I'm not worried!
They managed to encounter most of the systems in my first draft of the level but not even having placed any of the content, it just felt like a disjointed mess, but that was totally on purpose, could I have placed at least one good loop into the scene? Easily! But I didn't, not because I forgot, but because I actually wanted it to be a comically bad experience, it was all going according to plan.

Well wikipedia says the elements of a behavior tree are repeated impulses from a root node which run task nodes either directly or indirectly through selection or sequencing nodes.
Sequencing, selection, repetition. I.e the fundamental constructs of imperative programming ie statements, conditionals and loops.

I'm not saying its not a good way to organize behavior but people talk about it like its specialized gamedev knowledge. It's just a restatement of what imperative programming is.

Are you joking? They removed two fucking engines in the past few years because one guy wanted to. As well as the NPR shader node because "it didnt fit his vision." This pissed people off so much that he was forced to bring it back, but sadly there wasn't the same outcry for the engines so they're gone.

Yeah, then Blender would actually be a serious program. Right now it's a mess with backwards and forwards compatibility issues, and the development is just the European autists neglecting core problems to work on a pet feature for two years they'll abandon halfway through to work on another pet feature they'll also abandon halfway through.

The BASIC ANIMATION LAYERING SYSTEM was broken for 10 years because no one bothered to fix it. And these people supposedly make their revenue from movies. It's not a serious program.

an interesting setting for a video game could be an inherently magical world where the government has made magic illegal, punished by death. the government doesnt want regular people having magic to keep them "safe" but in reality the elites want only themselves to have magic powers. the government is moving the world towards TECHNOLOGY, it has robot soldiers and whatnot already, computers too, nanomachines, cybernetic implants, etc, but all of a different aesthetic than real life, not typical cyberpunk shit. above the human elite's they are actually taking orders from Reptilian demon/aliens and those Reptilian demon/aliens are actually taking orders from a massive cosmic AI whose goal is to remove magic from the entire universe and has done it to thousands of worlds already.

Although it's fun I think it's not gonna do well just because of its genre, I heard steam intentionally devalues platformers and other genres. Anyway I'm hoping to see more from it next demo day.

I think some of them do, there was this one Anon the other day who told me it’s the only good part of the project; and personally it has been a huge motivation. (I mean I was very motivated to make a custom engine that works exactly the way I want.) After the recent Stormgate debacle it may also be a bit more prominent of a topic.
But yeah I would only run these ads in designated autist pits.
Gonna make some that are more basic. It DOES seem a bit stupid to advertise very generic properties like "10 Campaign Missions" for a game that looks like crap. Though the game design is somewhat unique, I’m not sure if I can condense it into an ad. Maybe I just run the logo and some action.

You need some math and programming skills to create procedural dungeons and there really isn't any prefabricated way of doing it. You should go for it though! You'll learn a lot. Any 2d engine like gamemaker would be fine. You should be more concerned with how you're going to make the art and music than which engine you'll put them in.

ClickTeam Fusion is an engine for making games without writing program code, check it out, maybe it works for you.
In case you are able and willing to learn programming, you should first focus on learning raw programming for a week or two. No user interfacing stuff, just solving Project Euler tasks and so on. If you feel you have a bit of talent, you can consider picking up an engine where you write code, like GameMaker or Godont. Or you can make a game based on raw SDL2 or LΓ–VE2D. No matter what, it will be a long, stony road.
But for Roguelikes at least there is a lot of learning material out there, I believe whole YT code-along series of making a basic Roguelike skeleton are available for many technologies.

I would describe "ZUN harmony" as something like a recursive harmonic space. Classical western harmony has the music travel from a beginning to an end point in a logical sequence (see functional harmony). Modern western harmony has the music kind of hover around a single harmonic area or rock back and forth between two stable harmonic areas (see chord loops). ZUN's harmony is much closer to the classical functional harmony, except rather than traveling from chord to chord, it travels from key center to key center. He leans on very strong and clear progressions like VI-VII-i, but constantly walks around where that root is.

That part of his composition is what would make it into textbooks at least. His other stuff like his use leitmotifs and melodic phrasing is also very high quality, but is nothing truly innovative.

You don’t understand. It’s not about "oh look I made a custom engine" – it’s about the fact that you can immediately tell when you play an RTS or ARPG that was made in Unity, for example, because the units all blob together in always the same fashion. And this behaviour is really shit and ruins the fun, for some people, like me, for example.
There is a target audience that very much cares about NOT having death ball unit blobs. It may be that "Custom Engine" is too technical of a way to phrase it. But the fact itself is very much a core pitch for the game (I would have just made an Sc2 custom map otherwise), and it IS about fun.
I can tell that you are not in the target audience, which is fine, but obviously then my game would never appeal to you, no matter how I advertise it

I have a really lore rich and unique fantasy setting that is cooler than the lore in Elder Scrolls series. I think it would really succeed in attracting a lot of people cause from years of observation I noticed that people just love to talk about lore in games.
I'm struggling to figure out what is the 'best' type of game to make- I really want something where I can share this lore naturally.
I'm thinking a digital board or card game but to be honest I don't have much experience in them. I think Inscryption is an OK game but I never played any other card games, besides one obscure one that I have in my library but don't remember the name of (Does anyone know any cool card/board video games that are ripe with interesting game mechanics or design?)
Was thinking about JRPG type of gameplay too, but I think it requires more assets to create successfully.
I don't want to make a "Darkest Dungeon" type game.
My setting is perfect for "Battle Fantasy", so a type of game where you can play a Hero with their "adjacent armies" would be a good, but I think more difficult to execute in a card game.

a lot of mistakes come down to the developer miscommunicating by accident, simply forgetting to communicate something or, worst of all, falling into psychological patterns to brainwash their players on accident into not seeing what the developer wants them to see
you think I'm memeing but one dev here added a big long UI element on the side that shows something and then they got feedback from players who wanted that UI element but didn't realize it was there the entire time. the developer had somehow created a mental wall that blocks it out of the brain

In games they like.

>I'm struggling to figure out what is the 'best' type of game to make- I really want something where I can share this lore naturally.
Think about whatever's unique about your lore can be represented/used in terms of game mechanics. Then figure out what kind of game best supports that game mechanic.

But really
>Start with Pong.
I can 99.75% guarantee that you don't know what a mind-boggling amount of effort making a complete game is. Making Pong (complete, with everything a game should have) will give you a good idea of what you're up against and whether you even want to be making games.
You know you can instead make a total conversion of some existing game (like Skyrim for example) with your setting and would take 1/4th of the time probably. You can make a "beautiful corner" (like confine it to one area) of Skyrim and see how it plays and more importantly if you have what it takes to make even that much.

To be able to make a good game you are required to build on top of the shoulders of giants, of decades of innovation, not playing games or only playing a specific genre of games will lead to you making slop because you just don't know about how to improve or fix the mistakes that have already been made by countless other devs.

the need you're describing in this post is best addressed with male friendship. women are NOT for support / approval. women are anxious emotional leeches. if you hit them with all that neediness you described they will be repelled.

women suck at dealing with emotions, that's why they are so obsessed with emotions. did you fall for the emotional intelligence meme where psychologists will coddle women by giving them participation trophies in the intelligence department? psychologists know women better than anyone and they systematically treat women like children. think about it, every difference in how psychologists treat women vs. men boils down to them treating women like children and only men like adults. I am repeating myself for emphasis so it sinks in. women are like children according to the closest thing we have to "experts on women". all their communication about and to women (same thing) comes down to transparently patronizing encouragement 24/7
>women are wonderful and strong and intelligent! you go, girls!
this isn't how you treat an adult. this is how you speak to a child. they might as well be telling women
>you're definitely going to be a princess when you grow up

women are obsessed with emotions because they LACK emotional intelligence. as a man you have to have surplus emotional stability to survive. if you don't have that innately you can still hope to leech it off male friends and your parents maybe. then put on a poker face and hope your chick won't punish you too badly for those times when your emotional support network isn't enough and you become a bitch temporarily. lots of guys live like this, it must be a scary place (depending on a support network as a man) but it can work.
but you absolutely, positively cannot go from lonely bitch to a gf somehow helping you become less of a bitch. this would be an unrealistic expectation in the past when some women might depend on you for food and shelter. today it's impossible.

That's what dating is actually like. Go try it out. Women are super fun.

That whole macho fake masculinity thing is a conspiracy theory created by chads to keep you a virgin. And most men fall for it daily. Women find that absolutely repulsive and dry up crazy fast around "men" like that. Meanwhile the guys who know it's a conspiracy get any girl they want bc theyre all so desperate.

I dont envy women at all. They have so few choices but we get an overload of choice.

She didnt break up with you bc of that tho.
I think a lot of guy's problem is autistically believing the words every says, automatically, without understanding the reality.
>MEN do [fake macho culture bullshit]

>MEN and WOMEN are completely different!!!
Reality: Nah, they're both the same: mostly retarded. But women also are horny all the time and you can make them wet simply by NOT being the above
>I opened up once and she tried to kill me
You have to open up to women that aren't psychotic bitches. For years I only dated psychos bc my autism couldnt identify them. Once I learned to avoid that type, it became easy to find sane ones. Not easy to find a good one tho bc 90% of humans are retarded or cruel. But you should still find it easy to make even the psychos and selfish jerks soaking wet. Actually the former are even easier to be honest.

>She said she broke up with me because...
90% of humans are retarded and dont even have enough self awareness to accurately tell someone why they do anything at all. So most likely she didnt know and just said some bullshit or wanted to hurt you for revenge.

The reality is most women break up with men bc they find a better mate (extreme lack of maturity and low intellect), are repulsed by most men bc theyre all falling for the masculinity memes (normal women), or they want to be abused (psychos) and you arent evil enough for them.

You didnt get dumped bc you cried. You got dumped bc she hated you for weeks/months bc either she was mentally ill or bc you fell for the gender norms conspiracy.

No. Everyone handles grief differently. Also it depends how close you were.
Also it depends how easy it is for you to cry, as an individual, and how much you conform to retarded gender norms / social pressure. What matters is you grief rather than hold it in. But you dont have to grief if you didnt really care about the person who died bc they were shitty or you werent close.

I never said they were unsolvable period, but they're unsolvable by (You) specifically, and in the context of gamedev, any problem (You) specifically can't reasonably solve should be considered practically unsolvable in the context of any game you intend to make. "Solvable" does not mean easy to solve. You've only ever solved problems that already have well established solutions for created by others. Why don't you try solving something that hasn't already been solved before you act like everything in math is "solvable"?

No, and there's no single "best" solution. Unity stores orientation as a quaternion while Godot stores it as a basis. The XYZ you're thinking of is just a Euler angle interface to that underlying data. It has its limitations.
