This Webcam Motion Capture stuff is driving me nuts. I got to take a break from it. If anyone else wants to take a shot at it that'd be awesome! It's running, but the bones aren't updating correctly and I'm not exactly sure why or how to fix it. I basically vibe coded myself into a corner. I think I have to read a bunch about mediapipe to understand why everything is so off.

The idea was just to drag and drop a rigify basic human armature into a scene and then record an animation with webcam so it'd look smoother than my own manual animations.

I agree with the other anons. Do whatever interests you most. But if you choose 3D I think you should at least try a small 2D project or prototype first if you're starting from zero experience. I think understanding gravity, forces, acceleration, position, collision, sprites, textures ext in 2D (even just generally) can help from being overwhelmed with 3D.

webcam motion capture will never work good enough for you to use. I've tried every algorithm and method, even bought myself multiple kinect models to see if that would remedy the issue. It's a meme, you'd have to buy rokoko gears or something for it to be actually usable.

The idea was to make a "math game" with a roguelike elements
(Basically "Number"latro I guess)
The roguelike elements weren't implemented yet, just the "get the number for the respective shapes as close as possible to the target numbers" gameplay
I scrapped this prototype because it wasn't very good (it only just confused me when testing it out), therefore I am showing it here

reposting from last thread

i really need some good resources/examples on onboarding players, new players are leaving within 10 minutes and i can't figure out good ways of informing them how the game works without placing walls of text. i don't really play that many games and i have a hard time picking out specific things from a larger picture.

the game is a roleplay life simulator, i've posted it in here before. you start off in a room with a tutorial npc and that's basically it, a lot of people are too adhd to explore on their own so i need some kind of intuitive system to guide them that's not too forced.

i already have three quest npcs that are quite visible from the spawn area, but i don't think this is enough to get people hooked on the game. there are things like cooking, farming, cutting trees, mining ores, running businesses, etc.

I'm not interested, the same way I wasn't interested in quantum mechanics. I fucking despise all that by-the-book math that's all just hashing out formulae and solutions and shit.

Solving math equations at any level is usually not really fun because you don't get any real output from it. You can't visualize it or contextualize it. A lot of what you get taught only starts to make sense later down the line, or when you do something like gamedev.
Then, when you have to calculate the area of an UI element of the volume of an odd or changing 3D object, you have an emergent problem that has gratification at the end of it.

So yeah. I have no opinion on the matter.

i'm not sure anyone has made a game like this before, a bit difficult to describe it. maybe i just have never heard of it.
it's an online roleplay experience with a lot of systems working together, and you mostly just try to earn more money to buy more stuff and furniture, finding more things.

the lose condition isn't that big at the moment, but it would probably be encountering other players who will rob you.

i'm not sure about challenges really, it's just doing things, like watering weed plants and setting up farms etc.

the reason would be to explore and see what there is in the game (and possibly find more efficient methods for doing things), for me personally that's enough of a reason but maybe not?

It sounds like you're giving the player too much to do right from the start. You should start the player somewhere small so they don't need to do much to have a big impact. Start them in a small house with a small garden, so they can only grow 4 plants or they can only do 1 thing in the house, their days are short before they have to go to sleep in the crappy bed that takes longer to get sleep in, all that shit. The player works on $1-9 dollars a day so if they plant a single plant and harvest it and get $10 that's big.

I'm avoiding saying "restrict the player's freedom", it's specifically that you don't overwhelm the player with everything.

I'm making a Shining Force-like. It has the same positive vibe and low-stakes fights, but unlike the original Shining Force II you can customise the way your characters develops a bit more, for example, whenever someone learns a new spell, you can choose the spell yourself and not just get the next one in line. Non-casters get powers, too, roughly the same way casters get their spells. The characters you'll meet and have join your party are more fleshed out and you can talk to them, gradually revealing their backstories (if you like to).
It's more of a hobby project of mine and I'll give myself roughly until I retire to finish it. Which, if things go normally, still is 25 years away. I think that's doable.

Honestly if this is the extent of your gamedev dreams then you might want to reconsider where you stand with the whole thing. It sounds like you don't want to make games.

Oh yes. Sort of related I used to hate the billboarded sprite style, especially when done with prerendering. Whenever I saw someone doing that in current year I was like why, just use 3d models since we have the compute to do that. But once I got deeper into trying to make 3d games I became to appreciate billboarded sprites. Producing the sprites takes some work but it does come with benefits that make things easier compared to true 3d games.

>that field and battle graphics should be as close as possible

If you want a rigid world with hard limitations and for people to stop using their imagination. The early 3D FF games had completely different world and battle environments. EO changes environments and becomes partial cartoon during battles. The battle screen transition acts like a magic circle and actually helps people suspend disbelief because they are going from a world with one set of rules to a world with a different set of rules and the transition hides that.

You will be a much happier and healthier person if you go do something actually productive with your life.

Game Idea: "Our World Simulator", it looks similar to Space Station 13 and has simple core gameplay (just avatars moving around) but this is so it can be extremely massively multiplayer (100-500 people per round) but the core gameplay isn't why you play, it's because you can affect the world more than in any other game. The game replicates what's going on in our current world, a 2000x2000 tilemap of Earth like pic related, including the major governments. Like SS13 you spawn in with an available role, which could be US President, Police Officer, Illegal Mexican Gang Member, African Migrant Rapefugee, Jeet, Xi Jinping, etc, all the most notable things in our modern world. An African levels up by rape and murder and stealing for example. A core feature is controlling vast amounts of NPCs of your "kind" (jeet, mexican, etc) as their leader. So as an illegal Mexican you can also convince 20+ illegal mexican npcs to do what you want. Other players playing ICE would try to take you and your NPCs down. and it's just stuff like that across the entire world.

I think you are confused, the 45Β° you're thinking of is what people refer to when using top-down today, something like Hotline Miami or the old GTA is called "true top down", old top-down or just "top perspective". When you say top-down nowadays most people think of stuff like Legend of Zelda sprites, which show the top of the head more but not completely.

In Godot 4 I am making a 3d doom clone.

One feature I am stuck on is switches and doors in the level.

What I seek to do is switches that lets you remotely open a door placed modularly in the 3d game level.

Building a switch is easy, a simply enter area and press action. Done.

Doors too are easy. Same as above or if a variable is changed: Open.

The real question is how do I make it so I can place Switch A, B or C. And connect them to Doors A, B and C as I please? For example Switch A opens Door A and C.

I think that's common because the Godot learning materials are generally simple enough that you can get away with just having a variable pointing at another node. The reality is that beyond a point you can't get away with just that and either need to start using the scene tree (e.g. groups) or autoload-defined signals (e.g. the event bus pattern)
These def have their annoyances, though. Variables are better if you can get away with it

They don't, though. At least not enough people do to justify the time cost of development, unless you're a nepobaby, or already retired. The consequences of this behavior are felt when you're 60 years old slaving away at a construction site with a slipped disc because you wasted the prime years of your life making cozy art instead of doing something productive.

Developing society. You know people build homes, right? You know people create companies that solve practical problems, correct?
What problems do video games solve? Boredom? You're competing with TikTok, for fuck's sake.
Have fun making your games, but please do not be deluded into thinking the results of your labor will be beneficial to society. You'll care about this when you get older, make your money, finally go outside, and see ten million Indian immigrants shitting on beaches because your native populous was sitting inside, gooning on Twitter all day, and corporations decided it'd be more profitable to import cheap foreign labor. This happens. Look at Canada.
Make your money, have your fun, enjoy making cool games, but do not ignore the physical world you live in. Your potential contributions are more significantly substantial than you would otherwise believe.
If you're smart enough to make a good game, you surpass the intelligence requirements necessary to improve the society your, if you decide to have one, future family will live in.
You do not want to be lazy. Three billion pajeets gaze upon your soil.

It's better than nothing but it's certainly not an ideal way of teaching the player.

I think the ideal way to teach the player would be to have some of these things set up already so that even a dumbass caveman bashing rocks together would accidentally work it out, like starting with a pot underneath a light with some sort of effect that shows that it's growing so players know something is wrong when that indicator is gone.
Effects are really important in general.
If a pot has a %quality indicator on it that goes down over time players will just natural learn that.

well, if you're still devving you may want to just leave the tutorial like that for the moment but keep in mind adding effects and tooltips instead of big blocks of text for the future.

This potential you speak of is not all sunshines and rainbows. You will get exploited, treated like shit, lied about, and receive little to no gratitude for what you do.

The argument only holds if you assume that humanity does have everything all figured out, or at least that the remaining problems are unsolvable. It's mostly true, but I am changing my mind in the very latest months seeing how fast things are changing regarding politics, the jews, etc. But again, it's not like I have any talent for politics, or any charisma or anything like that. So it's hard to feel too bad about it.
The other guy is delusional or dishonest though, most companies don't solve any practical problems. ALL the remaining real problems are political or organizational. The way you solve those is by being a political extremist, someone who writes open source code for free, or something along those lines. Those are not the kind of life paths where you are likely to make a lot of money and prevent you from being 60 years old and broke.

We now have a working inventory system and message box with auto-pagination and typewriter-effect. Will be used for item descriptions, flavour text, and NPC dialogue.

Also brought in a friend to do all the writing. He'll be replacing my placeholder dev story with proper writing, including the game title not that I think anyone here would remember it. Hoping to have some new puzzle elements ready for feedback at DD64.

So far, so clichΓ©d, and deliberately easy to guess. It would eventually be revealed to be something different entirely. Never settled on what, something non-supernatural and malicious like alien experiments (or something better).

Thankfully my writer is going to come up with something actually original. I've given him free reign to throw that all out and do something interesting, as long as it logically fits with the gameplay.

It's fine, needs some work done to it. I was suppose to be trialing a new model soon but if I do have cancer then obviously I'm not going to be anymore.

But there are plenty that are talks from actual developers who have made successful games in the past, like that plants v. zombies one. A lot of the points I skimmed through there reflect what I've considered myself.
>here's a grave
>how deal with grave
>here's something that shares colors and shapes and theme with a grave but is plant
>woah use grave plant on grave

Thanks anon, it's good to know that there's at least one person out there who still values correctness. And you're right, if I believe something to be right I should be more secure in it and not waste time getting in arguments with every person online who says otherwise. I should let my games talk for me.
