Is MH Stories very challenging? I'm considering getting it but worried itll be a sleepwalk auto play sort of thing, I want mechanics to engage with, it doesn't have to be the hardest thing ever or anything but I just want something to actually work through

The damage you get from doing a sleep+bomb+TCS wakeup is not as much as everyone going full ham on a sleeping monster. Nu Udra especially, it takes like 10 seconds to wake up even with everyone slamming its head into the ground. Not to mention the fact that it's very likely a random will just keep attacking without realizing it went asleep. Very frustrating experience.

I no longer carry barrel bombs because of this. I would only reconsider using them again if barrel bombs did % damage instead of a piddly 100 or 200 or whatever.

I'm playing it right now. I recently finished the story. It's pretty braindead easy until the end portion of the game where it can be fairly difficult. Thankfully there's plenty of more challenging endgame content after the story if you want some of that. The combat doesn't really open up until you have plenty of skills which you'll get by doing some of the tons of subquests you can get from villagers and quest boards. I wouldn't say it's super grind heavy but there are a lot of subquests. Just take it a slow and try and group subquests from one area so you can bang out several at a time. It's actually pretty satisfying to bang out like 5 subquests in one outing but it does require a little planning because the UI can be a bit strange at times

I suggest reading the rider's notes section in the game because there are aspects of the game they kind of tell you about once and then never again and you might miss them. For example doing moves in a certain order can have you perform a weapon combo to do more damage and there is a button to speed up combat significantly if you want to get through a fight faster. Regardless of what people might tell you it is ultimately more complex than the base rock paper scissors. In fact once you get enough skills you'll probably only be using normal attacks to build kinship meter to ride your monster for the really heavy hitting super moves and be using skills otherwise for more damage and certain effects

I've actually struggled more in stories than I ever have in any pokemon game. You can face tank stuff with heals to a certain extent in stories but you're limited to the items in your pouch during a battle which needs to be prepped beforehand (yes stories unironically requires more prep than the main series lol). The items also have stack caps like 5 mega potions per battle which can run out pretty damn quickly with some of the later encounters

I’m a fan of coop pve games. It’s pretty much all I play. Most developers in the genre will implement interesting ways of dealing with death as a team. You’ll end up in complicated situations where you are doing your best to fend off enemies while trying to revive your teammates, trying to create a window or safe haven to revive or rushing forward to the next rescue point.

Monster Hunter is pretty much the only popular pve coop game where you get that absolute downer of a “quest failed” screen when you are playing your absolute best but someone got one shotted out of nowhere.

This 3 carts deal is a terrible mechanic that has been unnecessarily carried from game to game. The game needs a way to cluth. Maybe a small revive window or something before it counts as a cart.

I came back after 100%ing Wilds because the performance is honestly garbage and there is no endgame.
Rise at least has investigations.
I really liked the new monster designs of Wilds, but it doesn't mean shit when I'm forced to play with a shield on my HBG (Bring back Power Barrel you apes!!!) and my CPU/GPU could fry an egg on low settings despite every other game running Ultra with ease.
Anyway, coming back to Rise made me appreciate the little things. I hope Wilds gets fixed. Oh, and that the annoying brown kid fucking dies. What a terrible character. Probably the worst main story character in all of monhun.
