I took a pretty good break from the game and I'm coming back and just can't help but feel like everything is way too samey all the time, not only has the the map rotation gotten suffocatingly tight but existing map pool has gotten old as a whole.

to be honest this is kinda true. russian turret controls have two stages: first stage follows how much you tilt the controller. second stage just instantly kicks you to max speed. an inexperienced gunner might be wary of pushing the controller past the first stage as the difference in speed if steep.
same goes for the driver, the tiller has two stages: pushing past the first stage locks the track. if you do that in high speed or on bad terrain you might throw the track

I had a better time in sim, it's fast enough to extend away from missiles lobbed at you, carries enough load to blow up bases/ground targets/ships to rack up points while the clock ticks over for useful actions, easier to snipe people with magic 2's which a bright red markef over you. The issue isn't the never exceed speed, it's that there's so much performance available at a given altitude. Reaching top speed means that thrust minus drag equals 0, and since drag increases with speed the bigger the difference between theoretical max and current speed the more thrust it will have available to acelerate. So the rafale accelerates way too much within the allowed envelope, while the su-27 for some reason gains performance when the engines are running out of ar.

I finally got to br14 arb and I just don't get it. I feel like I'm constantly locked on and have radar missiles on the way and I can't lock anyone on at all.

I got the f18 and I'm still working my way to the amraams. I'm looking for general advice at this point to get some enjoyment out of it, especially with what's the best radar mode since I can't get anything in a lock.

The SMT is undertiered, the J-7D is fine where it is. It's an MF with much better missiles so it makes sense to both be above the MF and below the bis, just as the SMT would make sense at 10.7 with its identical missiles and better FM than the MF but worse missiles and worse FM than the bis.
