The SMG and Pistol are both the first completely suppressed weapons in the game, and the ODST armor has muffled footprints, so it's gonna be easier than ever to stealth missions, because the primary way enemies detect you is by sound. When it comes to vision, they're borderline blind. I think the visual detection radius outside of combat is genuinely like 15-20 meters.

Depending on the spread, there's value in being less accurate against bugs and squids. If it has a similar cone to a tightly spread shotgun, it means you can casually pump and dump hordes without feeling like you're playing AimLabs.

Basically the experience you get when using e.g. the MMG and hipfiring it while crouched, you just hose the shit out of hordes at close/medium with little thought power needed.

The AR is a weird holdover from CE that never changed despite the human weapons becoming more and more aesthetically realistic with every passing Bungie Halo. In the original game, all the human weapons were slathered in chrome and/or had funny sci-fi designs. The AR and all other CE weapons excluding the sniper rifle didn't use a hardware scope because it automatically synced to your heads up display and intuitively showed you were the barrel was aiming. Then by Halo 2, everything human started going mostly tactical black with bog standard modern day scopes. We even saw this in the marine armor. In Halo CE, they wore improvised plates design in the ship's manufacturing plants designed to protect against plasma fire, because regular armor just melted and you died instantly. Then by 2+, we're using modern kevlar despite EVERYBODY knowing it's shit against plasma. The only non-Spartan troops not using the metal plating were ODSTs.

Funnily enough Bungie didn't even come up with the ODSTs, they were a product of the third party book tie-ins. Jason Jones fucking hated them, because Microsoft demanded cross-promotion parity with the novels. One of the most iconic aspects of Halo were originally footnotes in stuff barely anybody on this planet has read.

Well you already get the immunity to leg injuries so fall damage at a distance where you woudn't ragdoll, but would take enough to break your leg(s), is already taken care of. Wider POI discovery range is more generally applicable to missions whereas I doubt the actual damage from a fall is a big enough concern for them to have given an armour set such a niche effect.
Plus it thematically serves the Rookie's gameplay segments that are mostly based around finding the traces (points of interest) of your squad's activities.
