I'd rather Galaxy 3 just be a bigger better Galaxy game. Keep both Green Stars and Comet Medals, but have Green Stars be available from the start of the game and not boot you out of the level. I don't think I am one to critique here and I don't mean to be rude... but I honestly can't see you guys' ideas working for a Nintendo-coded audience; rather, your brainstorming always feels pretty self-indulgent. Like making too much emphasis on throwbacks, time-space shenanigans... and building up a consistent canon? I mean, there's no such thing as a bad idea, they say... but Nintendo makes games in very specific ways and these ideas kind of miss the mark to me, like the kind of games most anons here would not play for more than one reason, mostly because it wouldn't be the Nintendo-esque experience, it's hard to explain...

I had an idea for a new 3D Mario that involves an open-world island and multiple galaxy challenge levels.
It involves Bowser's vengeful ex-wife, who frames Mario using an android version of him.
Mama Koopa is using a space station to slowly drain the sun of its power.

3 could be considered Metroid-esque, with how you have to find items that add to and upgrade Wario's moveset allowing you to return to stages and find new routes through them to alternate exits and more items which in-turn upgrade Wario more.
Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia has a similar approach, though less levels and less revisits overall.
But I still wouldn't call it Metroid-esque.

I mean, sure, Land 3 would be the closest thing given it's progression, even if that'd be a bit of a stretch still.

On the subject of Land 3, funnily enough, that is exactly why I couldn't stomach it. Progressive movement is the bane of a platformer, specially when prior entries had your full movement from the get-go. Metroid and Castlevania get away with it because they are adventure games first and foremost where platforming and/or combat come as a supplement for the experience... Wario Land 3 attempts to be a platformer first and foremost while also borrowing the progressive movement from an adventure game and that simply does NOT work.
I have a lot of respect for Wario Land 1, and I ADORED Wario Land 2 and 4, but Wario Land 3 was just not fun to go through for the little I played it (and we don't talk about Wario Land Shake It).

To be fair, Land and Land 2 have a lot of adventure elements in them already. They're much more exploration heavy than your typical Mario or Yoshi game. You need to scour those levels for coins, treasures, and alternate exits. 3 just ramped it up more, while 4 dials it back to 2's level.

You know what, you two make a good point; I can share this solely to contribute with the general. This will also miss the mark a little and be kinda fanfic-ey, though: As a creative exercise I was thinking of a Peach RPG game. Here's some notes:
>Main plot starts by Kamek making a breakthrough on how to manipulate the Dream World, which is immediately put to use on Bowser's next kidnapping scheme.
>Peach is put on a deep sleep with her consciousness trapped inside a "Dream Cage", as Kamek expected. What Kamek didn't account for was Peach's mysterious powers (citation needed) and her daydreaming nature (headcanon) shaping the Dream Cage into a full-on world.
>On her journey, Peach finds Pauline, Daisy and Rosalina, trying to solve problems on each area of the world. She also encounters Mario, which serves as an occasional guide for Peach's journey.
>Through party banters and heartfelt moments, Peach gains confidence in herself; but during intermissions, she gets constantly assaulted by a shadowy creature called Amarita (temp) attempting to make her give up.
>First half of the story revolves around Peach exploring the world and looking for a way back to her kingdom, unaware she's stuck inside a dream. Kamek serves at the main antagonist, attempting to put Peach on a deeper slumber by taking her down and/or causing the world to collapse. The main theme of this idea is "Believe in yourself and those that believe in you." It's more character drama than anything. And as far as gameplay would go... I dunno, I was thinking of something as basic as standard RPG with some Paper Mario mechanics sprinkled, as well RPG Maker-flavored environmental puzzles and a nice quirk of Dragon Quest's Party Chat with lots of flavor text.

As a huge Mario fan, it makes me happy that everyone is shitting on Mario Kart World. I'm tired of how mechanically broken Nintendo titles are nowadays. They used to design solid systems and they've dumbed down the difficulty of their titles since the start of the GC. I just find it embarrassing that these devs would make routes/intermissions, 24 player chaos, the new trick system, meant to make routes interesting, slower than driving forward and the online the way it is and not see that as a problem and even update the game to middle finger the players of their $80 game that has no content in it's open world like Bosses, scenarios, career, driver races, unlockable, paint jobs, anything, a story mode (seriously, I thought that rainbow fragment sign meant were were putting RR back together in free roam). Mario Kart World feels like such a wet fart of a launch game, like it's super embarrassing because MK is the cash cow, but nobody gives a shit about World.

I feel kinda sad, like second hand embarrassment for the devs. You can just imagine the how the devs got online to play the game at launch, saw that players were spamming random and they were emotionally hurt that players were ignoring all the wasted time they spent on the open world and chose to go with old reliable 3 lap tracks. I really hope they fix this fucking game because I want it to be good.

To be fair, Mario Kart World comes from the forced soul era, it might not be good, but that's because it’s trying to be a return to form after the disaster that was MK8, which came out during the mandate era. For this particular story? Yes. Every character Peach meets inside the Dream Cage, with the exception of Kamek, is only a creation of her own. Think about those characters being Dreamy versions of themselves the same way we see people we know inside our dreams.
Fun fact: Mario is relegated to a side actor in this tale and there's an in-story reason for that.

DOOM Eternal. I'm a newfag to Doom, I only completed 2016 a couple weeks ago and I'm playing Eternal on Nightmare. It kind of awakens in me similar feelings to when people want more of a story in Mario. While Eternal does make cutscenes more skippable at the same time I feel like skipping cutscenes is bad, and I always want to give games a chance. But Eternal has a lot more worship of Doomguy as some god and how ordinary people are too scared to confront him and it's kind of eye rolling. Doomguy was awesome in 2016 without needing his dick sucked constantly. I'm usually left thinking something along the lines of "I just want to Doom". To tie this back to Mario, I have a feeling that the same kind of thing in Mario would make me feel the same. If everyone kept on telling Rosalina how cool she is would I just be thinking that I just want to Mario? Same for anything like a more involved romance arc.

Have you played or regularly play pre-SMB Mario games like Donkey Kong, Wrecking Crew, Mario Bros., etc?

SMB3 honestly never clicked with me all that well. Great game for all it's worth, but the amount of playtime you have to spend to beat a game (without whistles) always threw me off. I think I see exactly what you mean, it's a story being in the way of the experience. I don't see an issue with Mario games having a little bit more of character/story drive, but I agree that, in order for it to work, it must be done in a very specific manner that doesn't get in the way of the game. I say for a Story/Character driven Mario game to work, you have to sacrifice its substance and keep it relatively surface level; characters can be silly and have their moments, but it all must leave the game feel be priority, not sideline it... something where story/character elements are reserved for brief intermissions, subtextual narrative and short chit-chat would be nice (kinda like Kirby).

The issue with Odyssey is that the game look fucking awful nowadays. There's no actual usage of stylization or artstyle, everything looks like it came from generic Unreal Engine asset pack and Mario/Luigi/Peach/Bowser models are taken directly from 3D World but slapped with realistic textures and minor alterations.
There's also many more issues with the game like how Cappy doesn't feel like a natural addition to Mario's moveset when compared to Fludd, the forced SM64 nostalgia bait while the rest of the 3D Mario titles only gets crumbs or outright nothing at launch(Poor Sunshine... ), the forgettable cast of villains like the Broodals, the possession gimmick not being fun to mess around with, the awful barebones UI that has no style nor theme to it, and the awful out of place cheesy vocal tracks that belongs in a Sonic game. I would probably argue that it's the worst 3D Mario so far, especially when Bananza is essentially Odyssey but with all the issues fixed.

I just find 3D Land boring, and a little too short from a unique content perspective. The first day I got the game I managed to get to the post game without really trying to blitz through the game. The game also basically making you play through the same levels 4 times (Mario+Luigi Normal Levels, Mario+Luigi Special Levels) to get the final level was pure padding, and I'm pretty sure the special world reused some levels multiple times with different gimmicks.
3D World is better, but the format is different enough to 3D Marios along with it being slow in the Wii U version to make it the worst. Keep in mind that worst doesn't necessarily mean that it's pure garbage. Just that it's the least good.

Personally though, the ability combinations only felt right in theory, in execution it was too much information to handle (specially when doing completion) and most of the abilities felt either pointless or too slow to be useful, so never had much incentive to experiment. And the game being the slowest Kirby has ever been made it worse for me overall, specially since ability actions were mostly very slow to execute... also I guess being an N64 game gives me a bit of an ick towards it as well lol.
Either way, I have to give this game a genuine attempt one of these days, third time's a charm.
