Except there is, Amy debuted in the Shogakukan manga from April 1992. Tails' and Sally's debuts are from November 1992. Though Tails was created not long after/around the same time as Amy since development on Sonic 2 began in December 1991 and Tails was the first thing they came up with for that game. Amy was created for the games but we don't really know when exactly CD started development, probably around the same time since the Sega CD came out in December 1991. The earliest version of Sally technically is from that promotional Sonic 1 comic where she's Ricky but that isn't the proper Sally we know of. Princess Sally was first mentioned in the SatAM pitch bible from February 1992, since SatAM was meant to come out to tie in with Sonic 2. Though her actual debut was in the Archie Sonic miniseries from November

Ian's Golden age preboot writing was his best work. Penders and Bollers left so many open plot devices for him to use and he was able to make lemonade out of (most of) it.
As much as I appreciated the reboot being more in line with the games, the cracks in his delivery were already starting to show there and his over-dependence on long arcs that overstayed their welcome really started to rear their ugly head.
At this point I think it' safe to say his best days are behind him and Sge should probably consider thanking him for his involvement and showing him the door.
The problem is they can't really look to the Fandom for a replacement because Ian is ironically less autistic and cringe than most of it.

It's because Archie's writing standards were so radically because of Penders that Ian looked like a genius in comparison merely because he added game content (which he didn't actually care about besides trying to attract more readers). When Ian writes anything else he's just awful.

The Sonic cast severely lacks character traits and dynamics
The Sonic world is lacking in context and themes for its worldbuilding
The continuity has chronic issues of being denied or neglected
Most of the franchise's plot devices, like the Chaos Emeralds, aren't even good plot devices
For these reasons and many others Sonic will never have good writing

I think the problem with Ian isn't even that he's a bad writer. iT comes down to certain staple things.
Neither Reboot Archie or IDW feature an in-character Sonic

Ian continued to write his personal ideal with Sonic and that has diminishing returns as older Archie fans left.
Older ARchie fans losing interest was also inevitable due to the nature of the super genesis wave. That leaves him with gamefags and younger comic fags. He isn't universally hated but we all know that there is a serious issue if the biggest fans of the primary medium hate your work.

There might actually be some added novelty of being the most relevant dead character. But that is not something that can be measured or checked.
