For some silly reason, I never used both VMware and VirtualBox at the same time for Windows XP and Windows Vista. That's why I never saw them as a viable option until then. But when you use them together; VMware for DirectX 9 games and VirtualBox for older one; the compatibility is surprisingly good. I was even able to play nearly all of my games; like The Sims 2 and World of Warcraft 5-CD retail with the Elysium Project (1.12.1) on VMware without any issues.

Some of these games have a bad habit of messing with the host display, which is a big problem for ShaderGlass (it’s only compatible with VirtualBox, not VMware's KVM utility or default window). For other issues, i created Virtualization Pack section for you guys;
https://emulation.gametechwiki.com/index.php/Windows_NT_5.x_emulators#Virtualization_Pack
Simple scripts from that section handles nearly all cases for this Windows XP and Vista virtualization purpose.

In that pack, I also provide lots of NoCD, NoDVD, and update patches. These are crucial because both VirtualBox and VMware have limited parser capabilities for BIN/CUE CD images and lack support for copy-protected DVD images like MDF/MDS? For better convenience, I've made LaunchBox scripts that directly launch games and automate things like fullscreen and shader overlays. The one short stick in my scripts is that VirtualBox's GUI has a built-in feature for changing discs while the VM is running, but VMware's KVM utility has no option for this so i need to install software on VirtualBox before launching the VMware.

I'm also using ProtoWeb for a fun, retro web browsing experience.

I haven't tried the portable apps from PortableApps.com yet (https://portableapps.com/node/70284), but they might be a good idea to use. For now, I don't want to mess with CLI tools like VBoxManage, even though I know it would be a more efficient way to go.

If you've experienced this and want to help improve this section and the scripts, that would be really cool.

I've mentioned the SoftGPU project in several sections of the Emugen Wiki, including the one on Windows NT 5.x emulators;
https://emulation.gametechwiki.com/index.php/Windows_NT_5.x_emulators#Hypervisors

I've never bothered to set up a Windows 9x VM. The IBM-PC emulators work great, and frankly, I'm too lazy to go through the extra hassle. I believe the SoftGPU project is very promising for the future though. It could be especially useful for API passthrough approach (like QEMU 3dfx), which would be a huge benefit for Windows XP and Vista "emulation".

oh, nvm you were still talking about passthrough. Yuck. Let's just not talk about that anymore... let's try to recommend stuff people will actually want to use, lol. On the topic of MacOS X PPC emulation; it's kind of a no-go in general. I used it in QEMU a couple years ago and it was pretty rotten. Sheepshaver/PearPC 68k/PPC OS8/9 emulation seems okay-enough, though.
Anonymous No.536087063 >>536087610

Getting old pc systems 9x to run is pretty easy these days, you've got "good enough" emulators like Tsugaru, 86Box, DOSBox-Pure, np2kai, basiliskII, sheepshaver and PUAE that make it almost plug-and-play.

The real headache starts with systems from the 2000s and later, such as macOS X and Windows NT 5.x/6.x. Trying to virtualize them with a Type-2 hypervisor is a completely different thing. While QEMU's TCG emulation is an option, its compatibility is pretty bad, and it has no 3D acceleration support.

I am aware that my current method (using the scripts that I provided) for simple start/stop services and enable/disable drivers is not an advanced approach. I am also wondering about those PortableApps packages that I shared in a previous comment and how they approach this. There are other discontinued projects?, such as vbox.me (I used this one back in the day) and PocketVBox. To me, they look like primitive launcher solutions though, but I don't know for sure.

I also tried using QEMU KVM with GPU passthrough back in the day using ubuntu-server with terminal, but 'too much' work and of course it is real hardware dependent, so i don't think that approach has a future for this job

I'm aware of how impossible the low-level emulation of Radeon or GeForce is, but it would be wonderful if a high-level emulation project for the GeForce 6600 GT emerged for both Windows XP and Mac OS X PPC.

Just look at what's been done;
RPCS3, which imitates? the RSX GPU (a modified GeForce 7800 GTX).
Xenia, which emulates the Xenos GPU (an AMD Z430 based on the R400 architecture) with its DirectX 9.0c superset.
Xemu, with its emulation of the NV2A GPU.
The recent efforts of the ShadPS4 project in emulating the AMD Liverpool GPU.
Hypervisor's obsolete virtual GPU adapters for legacy operating systems (e.g., VboxVGA, VMware SVGA II) and API wrappers (e.g., d3d8to9, D3D9On12, or even WineD3D/DXVK)

I know there are lots of hardware for PCs unlike those "static" console hardware but this kind of project (e.g., 6600GT emulation on high-level?) would teach us a ton about emulating GPUs from that era...

I don't see what the problem with that is, when the only real reason you'd even want to set up PCem or forks is either to run certain DOS games with more obscure system configurations not covered by DOSBox, or to run 90's Windows games that are hard to get working natively even with wrappers and whatnot, and in neither case do you need a Pentium III or Athlon. Not that I wouldn't like to see those CPUs emulated, mind you, but they're hardly what's missing from the equation. More important IMO would be emulating more of the early GPUs like the Matrox cards, as well as sound cards supporting A3D or EAX.

and I dunno, it's not silly to expect the project to get better, is it? I guess I know not to expect anything from them, and simply wait for a better project to come along, or as you said, just use existing solutions like wrappers/fixes/VMs.

There's also moments where PCem/86box is weirdly taxed. Certain IO heavy Windows navigation tasks or some games will hammer the virtual CPU more than others. Some games, even ones you wouldn't think aren't that heavy, cause stutter when the 350mhz-400mhz CPU is fine 90% of the time otherwise. It just needs to get better. This is still a problem and I have a Zen4. It's less excusable every year.

It's not silly, but think for a moment what you're asking for. You want a PC emulator capable of emulating P3/4-era hardware at playable speeds on current hardware, right? That's most certainly not going to happen with the approach taken by PCem or forks, because they're aiming to be accurate emulators of many, many PC components.

The only way I could conceive of such a thing working is if someone built an emulator from the ground up targeting only a very narrow set of components (say, a 733 MHz Coppermine Pentium III with a GeForce 3, a Sound Blaster Live, 128 MB of RAM, and assorted peripherals and add-ons) and emulating them only to the degree that they can come together to get Windows 98 installed and games working. So basically, you get Xemu: good enough to get stuff working and running, but with somewhat spotty compatibility, except here it'll likely be worse because games weren't all made with one such configuration in mind, so maybe we add more cards to cover those cases, and... yeah, sounds like a hell of a job.

Yeah, I think that would be the most realistic approach in the near future, focusing on specific hardware like DirectX 9.0c GPU and SSE3 CPU. It's kind of like how Xemu works with QEMU (I guess they're using TCG emulation?)

Dolphin has always used those resolutions. IIRC there is an option to crop the output to match the aspect ratio, which might be what you were using before. Also, PS3 could natively render widescreen resolutions, the Wii couldn't and only stretched from 4:3, likelihood that aspect ratios will match between ports is low.

This is just a bit of a 'thing' in widescreen Wii games. They don't really adhere to 16:9 like you expect them too, often being a little wide or thin like this. You're probably just gonna have to deal with some black bars and/or manually adjust the ratio. Retroarch has a lot more cropping/ratio options.

Are you using hacks on top of the game to make it widescreen or solely game's widescreen mode? If it's the latter it's probably just baked in wrong; tough luck. Be sure you're only use one or the other, not both wide hacks and the game/consoles widescreen.

Inverted camera used to be more or less the norm until like ~2010. Mario 64 even gave players a neat visual explanation why with Lakitu: If you press the left camera button, the camera will reveal what's to Mario's right but that's because Lakitu's body will naturally move to the left while filming Mario. Not sure why we moved away from that but maybe just because "normal" sounds like the more logical default setting. It's an antialiasing effect, seems to be more compatible/less glitchy with some games than MSAA in my experience. When you have it downsampled back to native, it will also work with scanline shaders properly too.

Another benefit of downsampling vs 1x, MSAA or other postprocess blurs is it'll resolve more distant elements with less blur because there's more data to draw from. Then once it's back to 240p with the higher distant details, you can apply a scanline CRT shader to it with desired results. I'll make a PS1 one later as it's more dramatic. N64 has some blur+AA baked into its image even at 1x raw.

I tried MK64 and it runs normal. I also tried Lego Racers 64 on Ares and it runs normal there. Anyone any idea if there is a Retroarch setting that could cause specifically Lego Racers (and maybe some other games I'm not aware of) to run at double speed?

No. Made the mistake to trust Retroarch telling me if I have to or not (with some settings it tells you). Turning V1 Refresh to auto is what fixed it, though I still think it's a tiny bit off when I compare the ingame clock to my Windows clock (Auto possibly a tiny bit faster and 1500 a tiny bit slower), but a nonissue compared to before

Thanks a lot. Love this game for some reason and prefer the N64 aesthetic (and loading times) over the PS1 one which I guess I would've fallen back on

lel, glad you got it sorted though. As for the interpreter, AFAIK you pretty much almost want to use the dynamic recompiler. Supposedly the interpreter cores are more accurate, but I'm not aware of a case where they actually make a difference in Mupen. They're more of a "try this out as a fallback in case shit's broken and/or there's been a regression" kind of thing. Where you DO want to use interpreter is in Project64 because zilmar has been rewriting the whole fucker from top to bottom and has broken the dynarec on many games, but I don't recommend Project64 at all, so it's moot.

For some reason people are retarded and they think downsampling just makes the image blurrier. These are presets I use for GB, GBC, and GBA. Place these in retroarch/shaders. Interframe blending set to simple (core setting in MGBA and Gambatte, not a shader) can make a lot of difference in games like Castlevania II - Belmont's Revenge. The cloud castle backdrop will display in a lighter shade instead of flickering, which was the trick they pulled off to get extra colors thanks to the GB's slow pixel response. You can set pixel response in the shaders too, but I find it much more invasive and distracting than the core's interframe blending.

RA keeps rendering the game, shader effects included, even when paused in a menu. Then it does some convoluted transparency effect which probably involves copying around and resizing buffers. It's doing this at your full monitor refresh rate rather than the 60hz or whatever the game is normally being rendered at, even if you have menu opacity set to 1.

Basically, the RA menu really should have a true opaque mode that completely halts all video processing for the active game when using it.

What's the point of just adding an entire directory to a playlist when you can just load games from the directory? Would only make sense if the playlist let you filter the ROMs using a dat file or something like those MAME sorters, so you don't have to scroll through 27 different beta dumps of a game and modern homebrew slop that shouldn't be in there in the first place but No-Intro needs to find work for themselves to stay relevant I guess.

>all the Retroarch playlist talk
I only find it useful for FBNeo and Flycast+NAOMI because arcade ROMs are 8 characters long don't like to be renamed. You can give everything else humanized, long names and search for them easily using your operating system and drag them into Retroarch mid-session. Linux + fsearch and Windows + Everything makes finding shit a breeze. Not sure why you need playlist for anything else unless you just need the box art and shit.

I've read the wiki and FAQs and previous threads, but I couldn't find a guide that would explain to a retard like me how to unlock fps on a specific switch game. I am using Eden.
Obviously I googled it the fuck up, but the guides and discussions don't list all the dependences or how to install/use. Like there's a github for fpslocker and then there's fpslocker warehouse with files for each game but apparently those are not the final files and just scripts, and then there's saltynx saltynx tool and atmosphere and tesla menu and whatever the fuck...
I tried to follow discussions I've found on reddit and github but I don't fucking know it doesn't work.
But those are for a real switch, surely there is just an in-built version of an fps unlocker in the emulator, right? When I hit ctrl+U in eden, nothing changes, it's 30 fps.

So many old games would be awesome if they were just framerate uncapped, more responsive, and widescreen. A lot of good information here. The most important bit IMO is the superwide resolution stuff, as that will guarantee that games are always displayed at the proper aspect ratio. The stuff about getting it to output or fake 240p is good, but you may find 480p still looks plenty good, and that doesn't come with a brightness penalty, nor does it require fucking with shaders.

CRTs don't work in terms of pixel resolution like LCDs do. Rather, their limits are specified in terms of their scan rate in KHz, which is a function of the number of lines they are able to draw within a single frame times the number of frames they are able to draw in a second (the refresh rate). So for instance, in all likelihood your monitor's maximum is probably 70 KHz, which means 1024x768 at a refresh rate of 85 Hz, but if you bring the refresh rate down to 60 Hz, it can most likely output at 1280x1024 no problem.

Notice I keep mentioning lines, which are essentially vertical resolution. That's because CRTs don't give a rat's ass about horizontal resolution. To a CRT, 320x400 and 640x400 are the same thing, which is why people have taken advantage of this property to make "superwide" resolutions that can accomodate any number of lower resolutions and display them all in 4:3 (after correction on the emulator side, of course) with no noticeable scaling artifacts and no blurring.

Digrant73 is a one-game-Ciggy and the unsung hero of the RPCS3 github. Basically, his sole obsession is to run the Resistance games. He already managed to crawl through 4 years of build to find the one that was making the games crash. And then put KD-11 in his shirt and forced him to fix them instead of hiding behing "Muh Nvidia drivers fault". So it finally fixed that issue... These games were broken for 4-5 years! Now, it seem he's now facing the final boss, Elad itself.
Anyway, he proves that no-one test anything, ever. We need more like him.

Maybe they're slowing realizing that it doesn't make a diference for a 3ds emulator?
I think the Citra team got fucked because of Yuzu not Citra.
Also i was avoiding Azahar because i read that their format autism didn't let translations and romhacks work with the emu, maybe compressing a regular format translated/hacked rom on their own new format not only help with size but also this incompatibility? One could hope.

Yeah. Still neat, though. I was wondering how these NES-to-SNES MSU conversions are reproducing NES chip music as the SNES is hardware-compatible with the NES CPU, but has no way to natively play the audio. I found that these conversions are using this guy Memblers's sound emulation code which leverages both the SPC and SNES CPU to reproduce NES audio in realtime. Then I went deeper and found this whole-ass emulator, which is way more than I thought the SNES would ever be capable of.
