When they called it the 'harem' route in the menu, I was expecting a harem of the two main heroines, not a harem of the two main routelets. It really feels like they took two of the mini-routes from the original majikoi and placed them back to back and called it a harem.

Just finished urban myth dissolution center, if that even counts as a vn. They just wanted to do the omg twist in the final chapter, the earlier cases (especially chapter 2,3,4) are really shit as standalone mysteries.

I did some research on JP and EN sites. Based on what I found, sans the sex, that's more or less what happens in the all-ages version/remake. At the end of her route, she rejects the MC, then ghosts him (and Akari, apparently) when they try contracting her. Only now, when she comes back after the timeskip, she randomly declares that she's Akari's love rival and MC doesn't even get the chance to say anything before the route abruptly ends. This outta nowhere maybe ever after might be worse than the 18+ version you described. Neither is one I wanna read, but there's a tragedy to that one that I can at least appreciate. The all-ages one just leaves me scratching my head, wondering why she abandoned her friends to protect her friendship if she was just gonna go for him anyway. Oh well, this saved me the trouble of installing the game.

I'm at episode 8 and have been losing steam since ep 7's tea party. I feel like the more I read and tried to solve the games the more my brain hurts with contrived plot points, overly repeated information, gratuitously used fantasy elements, annoying characters that persist for some reason,... and a million other little things. The most fun I had reading umineko was the first 2 episodes where the mysteries and concepts were still fresh and novel and actual stakes were raised. The pacing is awful in some place, especially ep 4, like, I get it, magic "exists" as a cope for people to deal with the relentless reality. But is a whole 30 hours of reading really needed to illustrate that point? Battler jobbing to every opponents of his is honestly pathetic for something I've had to sit nearly 200 hrs for and ange is a flat and annoying character until the very end. You know a story is seriously compromised if you had 2 main characters and both of them suck... It may be rude of me but I have lingering thought that everyone who say they enjoyed umineko either lied to themselves or pretended to like it as a bragging rights. Am I insane here? lol

One problem with Clannad is how obvious some of the dialogue choices are. The game is effectively asking me if I want to go down her route at this point or not. And it's not a subtle hint. It's slamming the correct choices in my face.

Choices should be intuitive.
Clannad actually suffers from route conditions not being obvious to the player half of the time.
Kotomi is fine, but try to go fo Fuko's route on first try. Or Tomoyo/Kyou good ending. Or end up on Koumura's ending when you were actually aiming for Nagisa.
Clannad system is not good example how branching in a VN should be constructed

I like the way it captures the zeitgeist of the period and it was really important for it to do so because the tragedy towards the end can't be understood without the greater context within which it took place. After that scene the cop says something along the lines of "I don't recognize your face and I know every bad delinquent kid in this area" and that really drives the point home. The way it explores the Protagonist's narcissism is really well done.
