Boardbreaking was never the biggest problem with Maliss, it's the fact that it'll build it and still end with more cards in hand than the going second player (assuming no cards used). A Maliss turn 3 is impossible to live through.

I have a legitimate question:
I've seen this talked about before, as I've floated the idea from time to time, but I posted it YouTube , a lot of people reacted very negatively to it, but didn't really make any intelligent arguments against it was a bad idea. It was more reactionary.

Essentially:

The main (good) arguments I've seen against it are:
>It would make decks like Floo and Monarch overpowered
But it wouldn't, those decks die to even the most basic strategies these days, and if it's that much of an issue then just hit some cards
>Control would be the most dominant, it wouldn't be the MOST dominant, but it would be very powerful. Which a good thing, as control really isn't a viable strategy anymore.
>It would make the game more Handtrap heavy
I mean, that's kinda the point isn't it? The game is already moving toward that, rather hoping your hand of 5 cards is enough to do anything, allow players to draw more deeply into their deck in order to make use of the cards. Print more in-archetype hand traps too, that get your engine going as well. Again, this is ALREADY the design direction of the game.

Maybe? With so many hand-traps, it's hard to say, and I think that a rule like this most players would go for 60 card decks instead. I think it'd be very difficult to pull off, and if it IS a problem you can use the Banlist to adjust things, but I don't think you'd need to.

Anyway, the way I see it, it basically flips the game to where what's strong now, is no longer viable. Going First now becomes a defensive strategy, as giving your opponent like 20 cards to try to build a crazy board just isn't viable anymore. Instead, going first is now about setting up a strong enough defense through, back row, hand traps, and short combos, to survive till turn 3. Going second might try to shoot for an OTK, but they might also try to exhaust their opponent's resources and play it slower.

I think it would deliberately slow the game's pace down to a more interactive level, while also forcing designers to create cards that have to play with this core rule in fact.

To me, giving the opposing player a draw for every "advance summon" a player makes is a logical way to balance the advantage of a special summon I'm the first place.

Right now a lot of those decks pushed toward becoming irrelevant due to the high amount of interaction in the game which makes it difficult for them to play anyway.

The game also wasn't always skewed so heavily toward solitaire play, it just arrived at that due to power creep, and Hero especially has been around since 2004. It has adopted many identities and could adopt a new one that's more midrange under these new rules. It's not like they'd have to wait long either, Hero always gets new cards.

The difference is though, this doesn't mitigate the problem of those cards being effectively turn skips against certain strategies. It's Maxx C, but more balanced, but you still have to resolve the card.

My point is largely that, with the game moving more heavily into turn 0 interaction, resolving a "Maxx C effect" starts to become necessary, in order to have your engines online. Turn 0 interaction can actually be a lot of fun. It was the best part of Tear 0, and it's the best part of Dracotail, and VSK9. It is a very good direction for the game, but having to rely on a 30% change to draw into those cards, or needing a Maxx C effect to resolve, still does leave way too much to chance.

The more the game power creeps itself, the more you start to need a permanent draw effect to just be a baseline.

Effectively what I'm saying is, if the game is gonna move to Turn 0 interaction, then just make Maxx C a Master Rule, and start to design the game around that. Not only does it line up with the current design direction of the game, but also, ironically enough, has the effect of slowing the gameplay down, and favoring skill over who opened the better 5 card hand.

A year ago, 2 years, when I first brought this up, I generally agreed with the counter arguments, as they held true back, but as we move toward JUHU and beyond, they suddenly hold way less weight. On the contrary, it lines up with the direction the game is headed. So much so, I can Konami doing this.

Many people say, the Charmies were designed to replace Maxx C. But over a year later, and Maxx C is still legal. So I think that assumption is wrong. I think they designed the Charmies to reinforce Maxx c, so players have more hand traps for turn 0 interaction. If that's the case, rather than force players to slot in 8+ cards that can be negated, just make it a Master Rule, and design from there.

A whole bunch of these would still be playable. Effectively, the way I see it is that decks start to be designed in them being able to have short and long combos. You establish a board with a short combo and backrow so you can defend, and you can do longer convos that set up negates when you wanna push for game

The point is to leverage how much advantage you wanna give your opponent, by being mindful of the resources in their deck.

Many current decks can already do that. Tear, Swordsoul, Ryzeal, Branded, etc...

I think that's overly pessimistic as that'd be extremely stupid. What I think they'd actually do, is do what they're doing currently, which is printing cards like Field spells that let you normal summon again OPT, or more interestingly, spells that copy the effects of monsters like with Killer Tune.

I think the most interesting part is how much design space suddenly opens up with this new rule change in how you can design decks to have multiple styles of combos and strategy.

Anyway, with this post here >>536466702 I think you just illuminated why Konami is taking this slow approach, with designing the Charmies, and pushing into turn 0, and their new angle being all "we're going to do a lot of legacy support" with a lot of the new support, being exactly the sort of stuff that plays well under Maxx C.

This basically explains clearly why Maxx C isn't banned, and it why it likely won't be banned. The Charmies were never meant to replace it. What they're doing, I think, is effectively cushioning the blow, and powercreeping the game toward Turn 0 midrange with heavy backrow, so that when they do pull the trigger and do something like a rule change, there's a lot of decks which are still playable, just in a different way.

VS is a deck that gets stronger the more attributes they have in hand. They need to reveal a FIRE, DARK and/or EARTH monster to activate their effects which typically include destruction or some other form of disruption if they aren't busy searching.
If you're playing against it, be warned they have pretty good resistance to targeting effects due to being able to quick effect "tag out" a monster on the field by replacing it with another monster in hand, but outside of that, until the support arrives, they are somewhat bricky and their turn can be ended very quicky if you Ash/Imperm their Razen and Jiolong search effects.
Note they have a trap that can nuke all monsters on the field while giving them destruction protection so if they search that your top priority is getting rid of it.

There was a no banlist tourney last two years, and in both of those cases, Ishizu Tear lost to Ryzeal, then Vanquish Soul.

Plus, Maliss runs Bystials and draws tons of cards.

Going First, like right now, Tear could do well vs. Maliss and could even use Lancea to steal games. But that's mostly cause MALISS sucks going second.

Vs. Ryzeal + Merrli/Perlereino wouldn't do much except increase deck ceiling going first.

For Tear to be meta, you'd need to go

Havnis=3
Merrli=1

Maybe even unhit Sulliek completely too.

It would struggle hard against Ryzeal without that. When it comes to Perlereino, Ryzeal would just destroy it, thus it wouldn't resolve giving you the search.
