/domg/ - Dominions General
Leaked nation, Zemaitia edition. >>535776785

Dominions is a fantasy turn-based war game created by two dudes. One of them is a teacher.
The game combines a simple presentation with an extremely wide array of strategic options, including over 3400 units, 1100 spells and 400 magic items. Turns are resolved simultaneously, with players planning battles rather than directly controlling them. It has simplistic graphics but is easily moddable and extremely deep.
Basically, it's an autist’s wet dream of a war game.

Anon, you have to read the description more carefully

Its Zemaitia, a realm of harsh winters and short summers inhabited by humans (slavs) and chudes (balts), formerly ruled by the vanir (scandinavians)

The black knights (thats the teutons!!) invade, and they do well for awhile, but the iron kingdom (still the teutons) withdraws. The last human hochmeister (last of the human teutons!) swears allegiance to the chudes (its still the balts)

The humans of zemaitia have copied teutonic tech because it was superior so they larp with the shields and arbalests, but the only "teutons" remaining got pozzed into fairies
Anonymous No.536613281

The problem is that spears have no attack bonus, but the things they're usually repelling, swords, have defense bonus. Also there's the morale check, and human players usually prefer to build elites who will easily pass the morale check.

Earth is always useful throughout the game
Glamour needs a bit more research but has some super strong spells. Communions.
Blood is a bit dependent on crosspaths but has scalability
Nature has some good spells but they don't punch as hard as others, but n1s can at least poison arrows or be utilized some way.
Death has good spells and summons but low level death mages are near useless
Air has magic phase movements and good buffs, but doesn't compete the same way with other schools
Fire is evoc, nearly no good summons, very easy to counter. Lategame fire is pretty underwhelming, even midgame.

Adding some Attack and Morale to your guys is always good, Solar Eclipse can be plugged into a Communion so that's nice, but Bonds/Prison of Fire seems weak. It's not like Fire suffers from ways to stop chaff, and the high defense units you want to use it on (thugs) usually have other layers to protection you have to punch through.

It was fun in my dream, because due to dream logic most people simply abided by the rules (bring a new player) and blitzmin ended up getting so many new people he had to upgrade the server and setup donations which led to no more downtimes. Too bad I don't think it's feasible in reality.

nature has good utility items, and army regeneration and relief can decide the outcome of battles. but it is typically more of a good supplementary path than a good primary path. evos and summons are typically not that good for nature, outside of crosspaths with nature like glamour-nature. nature is also more helpful for living nations, since it provides supply items, nature mages have innate supply bonus, and it has some access to disease healing. and poison resistance can be very helpful against enemies with foul vapors

i suspect the tier-lists would be easier to judge, understand and analyze if you split them according to purpose. and also had two variant tier-lists based on including/excluding crosspaths for each purpose. ignoring the crosspath variants, a tier-list for best evocations, a tier-list for best summons, a tier-list for best utility, etc. not including national spells and items, since they can change the situation dramatically

True, but without mage support the knights aren't as strong as they could be. If you snipe the relief caster they will certainly have you can try out a fatigue play like skelespam + rigor mortis + grip of winter (assuming they didn't take cold resistance), for instance.
>and that the bless might mitigate earthquake slightly, for instance if the bless has undying and enchanted blood
That is a pretty popular bless combo so it makes sense to account for it. In the Man mage core vs EQ spam example you'd either have to greatly scale up your spam or try another strategy. Another anon mentioned using rituals to defeat them and that is an excellent idea. Since knights are so expensive you could try spamming unrest/popkill rituals on their forts to tank their economy. If they're running around with a doomstack you could try remote assassination spells like mind hunt or maybe spamming baleful star/leprosy to pozz everything (although the knights wouldn't be too affected because of recuperation).

very good points. lategame, for human nations without high-hp mages, i sometimes try to theorize how to make the human mages more durable, both inside and outside combat (ie. murdering winter)
ea ermor has cheap shrouds and can make dwarven hammers with a national summon
ea/ma/la t'ien ch'i has national slightly cheap 4 gem armor (and also some earth access across ages for hammers, and la t'ien ch'i ancestor smith has 25% chance of air pick and has forge bonus 1) that apart from encumbrance can make mages more durable
ma ulm of course can make mages more durable somewhat cheaply, etc.

unaging here does not make all your mages young, since some types of them have extra internal starting age, but it should actually make them less old, like going from very old to merely old, and some of them not old. starting age is randomized

the pretender is bad for a new player, since the poison cloud will kill your own units. unless they are sacred and get blessed, and thus get regeneration to counteract the poison. but probably won't become relevant due to the pretender not really being meant to be sent into combat. of course, you should give items to it in the midgame to help protect it against assassins

high nature enables gift of health, high death enables tartarians. a fun bless effect could be mending bones, but the diplomatic effect of that bless effect might be bad, and it would also only pay off much later, and would require an unremovable shroud on the tartarians

Your pretender could potentially search provinces (in person or via searching spells) for sources of gems that are associated with magic paths your recruitable mages don't normally know. Once you have a decent income of gems for a path, you can eventually empower mages so they can search further and faster, and/or cast a global spell that generates a much larger income in those gems. You may also be able to use the pretender or these empowered mages to forge items that will boost skill in that path, reducing the need for expensive future empowerments. Items that boost magic skill are numerous and the paths you need to forge them, as well as the paths in which they boost skill, are arbitrarily chosen by the developer, so as a beginner you can't count on those very much unless you want to look them up online somewhere. It's better to just play and learn about the items gradually. For now, maybe just plan on either having your god rampage around with specific spells protecting its own body, or having it search for sites of magical power in particular paths that your nation isn't good at, or having it eventually cast a gem-generating global spell like Eternal Pyre or Maelstrom.

shields, armor, and other kinds of protections that Ulm already has access to. Some of your mages in all eras can get Air magic (at least in vanilla, idk about SCBM), add some boosters to them if you really need Protective Winds/Arrow Ward/Arrow Fend in battle, do not waste pretender/bless points on Air Shield blessing
but ultimately, just do whatever you want, if you're new you'll probably not win your first game even with a top of the line meta-following pretender design. might as well have fun with whatever you want and enjoy the consequences of your decisions

right, MA and LA Ulm have shields, in EA only non-sacreds have shields and mixing those into your sacred formations won't guarantee your sacreds not getting sniped
also forgot you were using SCBM, i was looking at vanilla stats, so the whole calculation is different
also yes, Fateweaving does help you with the cleanup but the cost for it is your sacreds getting attack roll'd on. For the bless point cost, in theory 2 stacks of str are a more guaranteed buff that doesn't need you to risk your dudes as hard, but what do I know maybe the only battle you'll be in the sacreds will be the first line of defence and then the non-sacred swarm will come to clean up, and it doesnt matter that you lost your elite troops since you won the one battle you needed to win. Though usually winning takes more than one battle.

so no guarantee they actually close the gap fully since they'll likely fatigue out before reaching the enemy. they'll take three steps forward, cast, fatigue out, repeat. if the enemy approaches, it's fine, but if they're primarily ranged you're sol

In singleplayer:

Fair, but if one starts with the air elementalist, basic air elementals are amazing at the beginning (just need to make sure there are units in front to tank enemies). At least they were in CoE4. If you get water or fire, less good, but getting the elemental archers isn't bad. I don't remember much about earth starts.

The gem generation rituals are also great in the lategame, especially since the AI may not always be good at sniping them. Only drawback is probably the environmental consequences for Elysium.

Only weakness in the lategame is that there is little non-elemental damage, and that damage is typically available on units that are not the strongest available, which can be a problem. For instance if launching an invasion into Hell and the demons buff each other with all elemental resistances.

Cruiser Thug -- This is your classic thug. Designed to get into an enemies strategic depth and cause chaos there. Can be either snuck into the enemies backlines or used to exploit a breach.
(Infantry/Army) Support Thug -- A thug designed to fight alongside an army. They don't usually need the strategic speed or ability to slip past enemy lines that cruiser thug benefits from, however you need to consider what fighting beside an army entails.
Assault Thug -- This is a thug designed specifically for storming fortifications. It's nice if they can have some siege abilities as well.
Thug Destroyer -- This is a unit designed to fight thugs. Often cheaper than actually kitting out a thug but isn't always capable of fighting enemy armies by itself.
Main Battle Thug -- These are the old supercombatants. Expensive endgame summons with fancy expensive equipment. While it turns out they're not as invincible as people once thought they were, they can still be very useful on the endgame battlefield.

afaik, in dom6, unit heat auras cannot make clouds that go above level 2, meaning they cannot have their fire clouds deal damage, only cause fatigue. though presumably, heat clouds at level two being spread around would presumably make it easier for heat clouds from certain fire evocations to go above level 2 and begin dealing damage

one could probably make a test

20 muspel giants against 200 illusions

2 muspeldottir and 20 muspel hirdmen against 200 illusions

2 muspeldottir and 20 muspel giants against 200 illusions

and then try to determine if the heat clouds from the muspel giants make a significant difference for the heat clouds from fire evocations

The sprite is based on the "reconstructed" Minoan goddess which an archeologist made by gluing a bunch of ancient pieces together, vaguely inspired by some old writings and the little we know about things back then. Something between an artist's rendition and an educated guess of what the Minoan god mother *could* have looked like.

Since you didn't know that, here's a mini quick and dirty History lesson:
Minoans were (together with the Micenians) sort of the "proto-Greeks". We're talking about 3.000 years ago and farther behind, in the bronze age. Back then, the area around the Mediterranean was full of ancient, mighty, and highly developed civilizations. People fucking loved trade back then. Roads and trade routes reached thousands of miles beyond the horizon. It was also a time of strife, with mighty fortified cities being constantly built and razed to the ground.
Anyways, then the end of the world came, aka the Bronze Age Collapse. We don't really know *what* happened, but it looks like *everything* happened. Volcanoes shutting the sun, massive earthquakes that wrecked one city after another, hunger, plague. The stress led to huge waves of refugees, and even more wars. On top of that, the "sea peoples", so called because we still don't know who they fucking were, showed up out of nowhere on boats and started wrecking everything on the coast. One of the theories is that it was Northern Europeans, fleeing their own end of the world because massive volcano + ash = no crops for too long, plus other Mediterranean peoples who didn't really see a better solution than to join the party. Of course, all that death was followed my massive plagues.
Only Egypt survived as a civilization. They managed to defeat the sea peoples and held through the everything, although they were heavily weakened and that's why they got conquered by the Hitites shortly after (for a while).

the ghosts spawn in all forts that have your dominion, the higher the dominion the more ghosts.
and you build your forts as early as possible, and you dont need that many and you dont need to upgrade them, and you dont recruit any units, you only recruit mages to be gold efficient, just filling your cap circle with palisades is enough, and then when you beat people up you have income again and you can build more forts.

All other civilizations around the Mediterranean broke down and disappeared. The survivors fled to the mountains, away from the coasts, and hid in valleys and whatever hard to reach hideout they could find. People survived there for a couple centuries. Writing, coinage, and many other technologies and knowledge were lost.
Towards VII a.C., people started coming out of hiding again. They found an empty world retaken by the wilderness, full of ancients ruins. They built new cities, like Athens, and started expanding once again. Here we get to what we call the ancient era, which EA in Dominions is generally inspired by. Minoans and Micenians had gone into hiding. Centuries later, Greeks came out of hiding.
You might have heard of ancient Greek explorers. This is why they were exploring. Shit was completely forgotten. The Phoenicians, who you might have also heard about. were one of the first who came out of hiding and got to sailing and trading, so they were instrumental in spreading again knowledge of other civilizations, and technologies like writing and coinage.

My point is that we don't really know much about the ancients before the collapse.

Another fun thing is that many cliches of Medieval fantasy (and even of the popular perception of Medieval times) are actually inspired by Bronze Age History, rather than Medieval History. The average Middle Ages RPG setting is pretty much pure Bronze Age with Medieval aesthetics tackled on. Some things we consider tacky low quality slop fantasy, like overbulky armor with horns and shit, is really just Minoan armor. Look at Sarevok in Baldur's Gate. People wore that shit back then.

Academic sources are a bit dry, but here's a great video that gives a quick walkthrough of how things were in the Mediterranean Bronze Age.

>5 emeralds
>3 rubies
>1 diamond
>1 temple
Yeah it's not much. Luckily palesones are amphibians so they can get oceanic gem tiles that demons don't seem to reach.
Honestly this strategy is good, I went from the worst nation in game to have a decent chance to win, all because demons destroyed all city tiles including the capital, and they won't attack me if I have 50 giant statues defending. Sadly, it's also not as good as I thought, since it demanded more effort than I thought, all my strategy was that and had to focus mainly of having a digging operation in the opposite side of elysium.

Everyone in Sweden basically takes all their vacation time in July/August. I've worked with Swedes and I've been warned about this. Didn't pay much attention to the warning, because well duh - people everywhere take vacations in the summer. It was only at the end of June when the team lead casually mentioned that he'd be gone for 5 weeks that I realized what it meant. The rest of the team did the same, with staggered vacations so that absolutely nothing got done in about 2.5 months.

It says they were transformed by weird forest slav magic so I'm guessing they have better MR than the Ulmish standard. The moose is visibly barded in full black armor whereas the nation's standard armor color is green, leading me to guess they might have blacksteel barding. And since the riders are elf-adjacent beings now I wouldn't count out a default magic weapon in their hands.

Everyone did I guess. It isn't even that I circled them to capture them later. Somehow everyone decided to leave a good bunch of provinces alone. Everyone had wars on their other borders, maybe no one thought it'd be safe to move troops there. I also didn't rush it because I also was at war at my opposite border, but then I threw in some spies and noticed there was like an entire nation's worth of untaken provinces.
I won that game through sheer force of numbers thanks to being able to build a shitload of forts and temples all over the place. And it came just in time, because my research was heavily lacking... I won like 3 turns after the late game undead purging spells showed up. One or two more turns and I'd have probably gotten crushed, after capturing like 3/4s of the world.
tldr everyone fucked up horribly in every possible way, gifted me like 40% of the map without real opposition, and also chose to fight each other more than they wanted to fight me.
Also, some players apparently don't understand that there's more strategies than doomstacking. I defeated three opponents with the exam same trick

Does having a twist fate amulet protect from Domes and other weird phase attacks like MA Marignon's cap site?

Very nice, you might have done so already but have you drawn a Maenad before? At least I didn't see them in the booru

any interest in another test game?

I haven't been working on it as much lately
But there are enough changes since the last test game to merit another go

I have yet to go over Cathay, so they will be as Sombre intended if someone wants to play them

I gotta make a note to do that, rebalance all demons (I don't like how I did them,) and give Nagashizzar a once over as well.

he did invulnerability
I switched it to just straight up natprot (I thought there was already too much invuln and it was like 2 points over and above the natprot he did anyway.) I am going to have to think about how I want to do it

Have I drawn a naked human woman before? Maybe alongside a pan or satyr or whatever, not specifically I don't think. Is there some defining feature you'd be looking for?
