Cold Steel was controversial. A lot of people felt that it didn't live up to the previous arcs in storytelling and worldbuilding and relied (more than previous arcs) on shonen tropes like school and mechs (previous arcs had mechs but CS did lean into them more).
CS also lasted 4 games, 5 if you count Reverie. That's half the series at the time.
Unfortunately the sunk cost fallacy lead to very polarised opinions, especially with those who loved Cold Steel and those who felt that it was a betrayal. It has gotten to the point that after over a decade, there are people for whom their hate of Cold Steel is a part of their personality. Arc wars are therefore inevitable.

Why is everybody complaining about the graphics of Falcom still? I think it's amazing that Falcom is finally getting rid of the majority of load screens and introducing seamless exploration in their games. This started with Kuro but the cities and fields were so segmented which seems to not even be an issue in the newer engine they are working with for the Sky Remake. I don't know, it would hit me harder if he showed romantic interest for her. But I always saw this distance between them. Like he's her boss, that's it. That's also why I don't get the same closeness between the characters in the Calvard arc as in prior arcs. Especially in CS I felt super emotional because Rean and old Class VII were equals. I felt similarly distant towards new Class VII (with Altina being the exception) since Rean was their teacher, not an equal (CSIV somehow fixed it, which is why I feel much more attachment towards VI than III).
So yeah, anyway, I just never felt the closeness between Van and Agnes. It felt more like a slightly closer work relationship.

Rean route doesn’t really have that because his arc is done and they only brought characters besides Towa who are high on popularity polls. Vans route is the one with the emotional investment and chemistry between aso members. Van is great in Kai you learn a lot about him and action scenes are in his route too. Rean still cannot win against his opponents and he gets less screen time than Van. If falcom wanted to “wank” him then he would have Rean be in Van route and share stuff with him but they kept him separate with less content.
