It's just as well, Clannad Side Stories isn't very good. The Nagisa and Kyou chapters are combined into that extra episode of the After Story anime. There's some minor lore that might be of interest in some of them. HOWEVER, Ushio chapter is one of the worst things I've ever read and convinced me that Jun Maeda is a hack and that anything he wrote that was good was a fluke.

To clarify, Tomoyo After isn't just a continuation of Tomoyo's route like a normal fandisc, it's more of its own thing (I think it not having Clannad in the title was on purpose). If it wasn't a sequel to her route it could function as a standalone game since it's so different. It has a full story in its own right rather than just being an epilogue, it has its own message going on that's different from the one in Clannad, the tone is different, the artist is different, Tomoyo has a different VA (also Tomoya has voice-acting at least in the all-ages version). Point being it's not a run-of-the-mill fandisc at all.

I'm planning to read the original Tsuki after but how much does the remake cover. I thought I was going to find some stuff out in detail when Shiki enters Makihisa's room but then he gets stabbed to death

Tomoyo after is a strange thing, I'm not sure why it exists beyond just being the lowest cost input way to bank on a popular character. It's been ported to loads of consoles too, and each time it's after that one is relevant. I think the PS3 version could only be bought at conventions.

It almost always correct to translate a VN in the present tense, unless the story is presented with a literary contrivance like a book being found, a story being retold to the younger generation, etc. The action is unfolding before the protagonist's eyes, and the illusion of a story already being written down in its entirety (as when you hold a book) does not exist in a visual novel format. Present tense just makes more sense.

I know it's over generalized bait but genuinely, if you are learning Japanese and want to get your kanji better, Clannad is wonderful for that. A lot of the strange VNs I played back then would be really heavy on a lot of anime type language on spelling. You'd get a lot of internet slang I remember. But Clannad at least at points is written like a novel. It's very traditional and proper writing so you learn a lot of really effective language.

If you start fucking Manami (by cheating on Mitsuki) and try to dump her, she starts breaking into MC's apartment afterwards which prompts him to go to her apartment to tell her to fuck, after which she pushes him down the stairs which breaks his leg, then ties him up in her apartment where she tortures and rapes him and pisses on him. Eventually he escapes but she drained his bank account, canceled his apartment, and turned everyone against him, so he goes back to her and she mindbreaks him and gives him breast implants and makes him her "daughter" and fucks him with a strap-on. However if you don't break things off with her you get the pure love version of her route where they live happily ever after and move in together (pic related)

Well like I said, the main routes are all good. That's the focus of the game. It has a structure kind of like WA2 where you have an initial high school segment which you don't have control over, and you only get control after that's over, a few years later. If you only played it for an hour I don't think you read enough to really get an idea of what the game is like, honestly.

I believe you, but I'm not picking it back up. I dropped WA2 after 1 and a half routes for the same reason. Some people have described these games as being written like a soap opera and I guess that has something to do with it. It's the writer I have an issue with, and hearing about the ass-pulls later in the game just confirms my suspicions.

Well it's been a little too long since I've read these games for me to get into too much detail, so I will just have to say I disagree. But I will say this: when I was growing up as a kid my mother used to watch soap operas a lot, and so I got a decent amount of exposure to them. I don't actually think WA2 is like a soap opera. I think it's actually something worse, like there are points where the writing is just designed to make you upset, not in a "this is so dramatic" way, but in a way that feels malicious on the part of the writer, and then it gets immediately ignored afterwards. It mad me angry reading it and there was eventually a breaking point in CC (the part where Setsuna almost gets raped) where I lost all interest in the main story-line. I never felt that way reading Kiminozo. I think it's more similar to what a soap opera actually is, if you can take that in a good way. That's not to say I like real TV soap operas, because I don't, but I did like the characters in Kiminozo and I cared about what happened to them, and I don't think the storyline (the main one in the three main endings) did a disservice to that.

What are the three good LNs?

I recently finished every route of Baldr Sky, and I have never been so conflicted about how I felt about a game.

A part of me just wants to say "I loved it it was a great time", but another part of me just wants to rant about how frustrating the story and gameplay can be.

A part of me is genuinely interested in the concepts that game explores such as, extensionalism, second generation humans, "mind viruses", "how can we differentiate the virtual from the real" and the other myriad of sci-fi concepts. However another part of me laments the game as a "top 10 most interesting sci-fi concepts" article, feeling that some of these concepts are used as decorations on what is otherwise a standard dating sim.

I love how charming the characters can be, and how earnest the writing is at times. But characters frequently don't take the gravity of their situation into account and occasionally do frankly non-sensical things. The Chiharu route being the best example of this.

A part of me is irritated with how many times you have to re-read the exact same things to get to the true ending, and another part of me feels that final ending brings everything together in an really captivating way that is quite emotionally thrilling.

I don't think I can really recommend the "entire" experience. But I think I'd still heavily recommend just playing the Rain Route, and leaving it there if you're not really feeling invested. Does anyone not agree with that approach?
