People who like Archie Sonic/Western Sonic writing for the games isn't inherently bad.
The issue is that Flynn is uniquely untalented and incapable of imagining alternate versions of characters that behave differently (Japanese Sonic), a concept so easily digestible there's even an entire multimedia franchise for children and teenagers framed around it (spiderverse).
Flynn wants everything to be derivative of Penders' world since he's a talentless hack without vision who cannot adapt and lacks the ability to reinterpret and reimagine these characters and come up with new stories and characters without relying on what came before.

It does matter because they control what they want to do with their own IPs. They can't do that with IPs that they don't own since they literally have to be portrayed the way the property owner tells them or allows them to. Mainline and spinoffs have characters that are "available" for them to use while staying consistent to their games. You don't see Tikal or Chaos or Infinite in games like this because they're effectively gone.

Sega as a whole is very autistic about how the characters in their IPs are used. Look some of the franchises they own that has spinoffs. Characters that aren't canonically accessible outside of the games they appear in are only brought back through specific means. Like as a literal body double or in a game that takes place in a different era in history using the likeness of different characters. The only reason this game is even remotely good is because it's the most windpilled concept we've had in years and it finally, FINALLY, gives Cream the respect she deserves. The entire plot is centered around her.
This is the first time she's been this important since Advance 2.
She's a younger female Sonic who fights for justice, not just some polite damsel. She stands up to Eggman and is ready to fight.
She's an exceptional civilian who rises to the occasion, proving she's just as capable as the core 4 (who really should be the core 5).
That's why she's a great character. She's VVIND.
And the setting itself? A dream world where reality is twisted and you can shape things with your mind?
It's the perfect playground for Windnic. It's literally "the power is in your mind to shape the planet to conquer time." Sonic is an ideal, a force of nature who can do anything. A world made of thought is where he would naturally thrive. The level design focusing on flow state, rollercoasters, and half-pipes is just a bonus that actually understands how Sonic should move.
But let's not get too ahead of ourselves. You know who wrote this? Ian Flynn. The archie-fanfiction hack who is undoubtedly a cancer on this series. The only reason any of this works is because he was forced to write a concept that is in line with Actual, Existing, Sonic the Hedgehog. He didn't come up with this out of a deep understanding of the character, he was given a great plot by Sega Hardlight and ran with it. I bet you anything he still doesn't know how to write Tails. So let me get this straight. The big, dramatic collapse of Restoration HQ, the thing this entire arc is supposedly about, has resulted in... absolutely nothing? In fact, the Restoration is thriving without a central command. It was completely pointless. The goodwill network endured, everyone is volunteering, they're overstaffed. What was the fucking point of the last 77 issues of building this shit up if it works better when it's destroyed? This is what happens when you let a fanfiction writer who can't plot his way out of a paper bag handle the comic.
And where is the wind in all this? Oh, that's right, Sonic is nowhere to be seen. Instead, we get a committee meeting with Amy, Blaze, and Maekawa's vision for Tails. Tails isn't a hero, he's a chauffeur in his "Tails' vehicle" and a walking tablet who comes up with plans for other, more capable people to execute. He's just Sally Acorn with two tails, a walking plot device so Blaze can have her big moment. This is the character assassination I've been talking about for years. He's not an action hero, he's not a friendly rival, he's just the tech guy. Why bother if he's not in character with Judy Totoya's vision?

Surge and Kit are so desperate for "heroic" clout that Kit literally bombs a town to create a problem for Surge to solve. And Surge, the genius that she is, makes it worse by destroying another anchor.
These aren't characters, they're a joke. And the worst part? Amy and Blaze just... let it slide. Blaze even praises them for helping, even though they caused the entire disaster.
