This isn't shipfaggotry. This is friendship. Sonamyfags had a choice in the 10s, they could either continue their never-ever ship or have Amy grow up and them be friends.
They chose her growing up and them being friends.

Amy is literally a civilian girl who idolizes romance. She wants (or at least, wanted) Sonic to slow down to match her pace. That's the whole crux of their conflict. Amy wants emotional intimacy that Sonic is not comfortable providing her. Amy seeks external validation from Sonic rather than from within. This is treated as a terrible thing since throughout the franchise, we saw Amy's character shine when she was empathetic. When she would go out of her way to help others. When she'd believe in herself rather than hope for Sonic to one day believe in her.
Amy's unhealthy attachment to Sonic is not a strength. It is a weakness.
One she has overcome and that is now evolving into a more mature understanding of Sonic and his boundaries, comparable to what Tails has of the blue blur.

I find it funny how people blame Maekawa on Tails becoming more technology focused when not only was that NOT a Maekawa invention (Tails built a whole spaceship in Fighters) but also his flanderization happened in Sonic X and only started affecting the games in Unleashed onwards which was written by Kiyoko Yoshimura, a person who actually wrote for Sonic X unlike Maekawa who served as a "supervisor" (we don't know what that actually entailed. Maekawa was in the US during Sonic X's first season and Prime was also "supervised" by Sonic Team and look how that turned out)

Also Tails being a genius and rivaling Eggman is cool and follows on his arc of SA1 very well when Eggman didn't really take Tails seriously, to SA2 where Tails directly rivals Eggman. Tails was always an inventor and prodigy, there's nothing stopping him from being a mechanical genius AND being physical

I have my issues with Maekawa but this nonsense that he "ruined" Tails' character always seemed very bad faith

Let's get this delusion over with. The idea that Amy "loves adventure" is a recent fanfiction-tier retcon pushed by hacks like Flynn and Stanley to make her more palatable. It has zero basis in the actual games.
Go back and play *Adventure*. What part of her story is "adventurous"? She goes shopping. She gets chased by a robot. She spends the entire game protecting a bird. Her motivation isn't a thirst for action; it's basic decency and getting caught up in something she didn't ask for. She's an ordinary civilian who gets dragged into the plot.
Her entire character in the 00s, her core motivation, is about stopping the adventure. It's literally in her theme song. "My Sweet Passion" isn't subtle. "Come on, settle our lives." She wants Sonic to stop running and commit. She wants the one thing he will never give her: a slow, domestic life. That's the entire point of their dynamic. It's a conflict. She wants to anchor the wind.
Look at her official hobbies. Fortune-telling. Dowsing. Nothing about fighting, exploring, or chasing thrills. She's a girl with a crush who wants to settle down.
This new "action girl Amy" is a complete fabrication. It's a cowardly attempt to sand down her actual character traits because modern writers are terrified of a female character having a flawed, obsessive personality. They took away her actual motivation and replaced it with a generic "I love adventure too!" persona that makes her a redundant, less interesting version of Tails.
It's pathetic and completely misunderstands the character, who by the way, was never good to begin with.
I dare you to find me an example of 'Amy loving adventure' having basis in canon or official material before Flynn and Evan started writing for the series. You won't be able to find one. Definitely not in the games, at least.

The entire point HERE is that Amy wants Sonic to see her as strong and capable, rather than a damsel. Rather than a burden.

After the Egg Carrier crash:

Amy didn't like that Sonic was always rescuing her. She wanted to change the narrative.

Start: Amy is bored with life, she wants exciting adventures like when Sonic was around.
Mid: Sonic shows up, Amy is on an adventure, but Amy is captured again so Sonic has to rescue her. Amy reflects on this, and doesn't like that.
End: Amy proves that she can do things all on her own, so she resolves that next time, Sonic will be the one admiring her.

It is a very simple and clean story. Amy is an energetic girl that loves the excitement Sonic brings to her life, but had to become strong enough to take care of herself.

Women will often view romances as 'adventures' in and of themselves. Amy is shown to heavily conflate her idea of 'adventure' with her fruitless quest to marry Sonic.

We do not see Sonic rescue her in Adventure. Tails does by lifting her off the Egg Carrier.
Amy proves she can take on Eggman Robots. She resolves to be less useless and has a hopeless wish that'll lead to Sonic admiring her if she mimics him. This is not rooted in genuine enjoyment. This is not rooted in real passion. This is rooted in a lovesick desire to copycat a crush.
The adventurer's equivalent of a fake gamer girl.
This character is trash. There is nothing worth salvaging here. Her character premise cannot be fulfilled since she wants to anchor the wind, something that can never happen in the Games' status quo. Which begs the question of why such a useless character even exists in the first place.
She will never marry Sonic.
Yet SonAmy fans who are duped into feeling sympathy for this fucking wretched character will be brainwashed by her pleasant on the eyes design and cute voice actresses to prioritize 'her happiness' over Sonic being in character. Which creates a lot of problems for a franchise that isn't supposed to depict explicit romance and is supposed to be focused on serialized adventure stories. Since you end up with a subset of psychotic hate fans who DEMAND SonAmy be canonized and get unreasonably mad and frustrated the more the company moves away from this doomed, garbage, and dead on arrival ship.
At least Sonic and Sally were actually best friends, at least they actually grew up together.
Sonic and Amy have no reason to like each other and Evan Stanley and Ian Flynn have desperately tried to retcon them into being 'besties' despite the decades Sonic spent dodging her sexual harassment yet it still feels fake. Phony. Because Amy isn't Sonic's bestie. She's a stalker creep.

Amy is defined by love and passion. GENUINE love and passion. For Sonic especially, more than anything else in the world, "Sonic" is what gives Amy life. That does not EVER mean that all she wants is "Sonic's Chilidog". That is not what 'Amy loves Sonic' mean. Amy is in love with Sonic, always has been, and that's meant to be a pure and romantic love from the perspective of a young girl. Don't get it twisted.

But Sonic was never the only thing Amy cares about. The ACTUAL central point of her story in Adventure is Birdie for a reason. Same with Heroes having Chocola & Froggy. Amy is driven by love and compassion for anyone around her. That's where Gamma's entire story has Amy as catalyst for his arc. Gamma was just an Eggman robot, but Amy saw something more in him, and that led to drastic change and a bittersweet conclusion. Everyone loves Gamma's story, and Amy is the reason it even happens.

Amy's own story is spurred on by meeting Birdie, and Amy immediately tries to protect the Bird. She goes to Sonic for help, but her priority was Birdie. Her fight with ZERO at the end is motivated by wanting to avenge Birdie, as she was helping to reunite Birdie with their family. Sonic Heroes, the end-goal is helping Cream & Cheese find Chocola, and helping Big find Froggy. Amy's personal motivation is Sonic, as always, but that's not her priority here, nor is she just using Cream & Big as an excuse to chase Sonic.

Amy has always been a loving and compassionate character, and her love for Sonic is where that sweet passion comes from.

Knuckles is the opposite of all of this. So is Blaze. And thus, both Knuckles and Blaze are hot-headed. Knuckles may be introverted, stoic, duty-bound and very responsible. He will sit there at the Altar for as long as it takes, dedicate every waking moment to ensuring that his entire island is secure. He's a treasure hunter, exploring all the ancient ruins and deciphering their languages to uncover as much as he can about the distant past and where he came from. If Sonic is the wind, then Knuckles is the mountain...

A RED Mountain. Because when you set him off, Knuckles ERUPTS. Just as Sonic is always cool and calm in the face of danger, Knuckles is always boiling with ferocious aggression. He's always hyper-vigilant and on-edge, suspicious of anything or anyone even daring to breath in the same region as the Master Emerald. Where Sonic rarely takes anything seriously, Knuckles is rarely ever fooling around. He's not playing any games here. This is his sworn duty, and if you're gonna get in his way, you're getting a KNUCKLES SANDWICH straight to your SKULL.
