I've only done Chaos Ending in SMT IV and I was expecting SMT IV A to take place at 70% point in the game. But fuck lol nobody told me it literally took place 95% of the way there. It was supposed to be more expensive. The game only utilizes half the script prepared for it. Which is why so many plot elements and characters are introduced only to get dropped immediately afterward.

I genuinely wonder if the original kaneko version of the script would have addressed that the neutral ending was gonna lead to tragedy very soon. The final game barely addresses the demonic gene but it IS still canon as the reason why the mikado citizens can turn into demons just by reading literature. And the rules of that gene dictate it will autoactivate when theres no archangel present for an extended period of time according to the canon extra material (and apocalypse itself in that one DLC mission. For all of apocalypse's bullshit and retcons, thats actually not one of them). So like an unknown number of days after the neutral ending all those mikado people who came down are basically gonna chest burst into demons

After replaying smt1 I see how much overlap there is with V. The relationship between the protag and heroine is very similar to Aogami and V's MC.

I would say reincarnation plays a part as well between the two because it's a bond down to their very souls even though that was something that only happened in 1. It's implied that in V's world lore they would still be connected in death. It almost feels like this overlap was intentional.
And when you take a look at Tao and Yoko in combination with this you can feel an even heavier smt1 influence. I remember in the Kai to Yuu magazine interview Doi and Komori did after VV came out, they mentioned that older players since would find something reminiscent about Tao and Yoko:

Honestly I think you guys are exaggerating a bit. Trust me I'll shit on V all day for the tons and tons of things I don't like but VV is a lot more original for the most part, I wouldn't say a couple parallels that you can draw make it overly derivate. It took the game from an utterly dull nocturne rehash without the atmosphere or great designs and gave it a new core that stands on its own as an interesting concept. I'd say the expanding of the scope from "YHVH is the cause of all this" to the greater conflict of the snake and bull archetypes being the reason for everything and yhvh just being another in a long line of those guys abusing the system is probably the single most unique and interesting usage of mythology in any of these games since kaneko left. Saying its more derivative than SMTIV of all slop just because yoko is a vaguely chaos hero archypted character is kind of absurd. I prefer MP for all skills, though I would prefer it be called SP for "spirit/stamina points." Tying physical attacks to HP feels unnecessary. However, I greatly dislike the trend of making widely available STR-scaling magic attacks and the abundance of pierce for everything. I feel like the more recent games have oversimplified and killed the diversification of team building because the end result of demon fusion is usually some number of boost/pleroma skills, skills that allow piercing, and just the best-in-class attacks or buff/debuff spells.
Removing HP for physical attacks was an act of simplification, but I think it was largely a good one whereas much of the other ones are not. Maybe you could make particularly strong attacks cost HP in lieu of or in addition to MP, but I think just MP is fine for the default.

Man, that's a really hard question because I don't think any single game has the exact balance of features I want for demon fusion and team building. I think more than the presence of boosting passives I dislike how many of the later games add really powerful but specific traits that strongly encourage you to build certain demons a specific way Persona 5 Royal and SMTV are probably most guilty of this even if the concept of demons having unique passives isn't necessarily a bad one.
Strange Journey has a mostly great compendium that has a few lulls depending on level, but inheritance is a crapshoot and I despise how demon sources work.
IVA, as you mention, implemented affinities well enough to encourage diversification and specialization, but it really did solidify some of my least favorite aspects of demon building.
Devil Survivor is great for personalizing your demons and making it feel like they all have a role in the party due to how racial skills work, but the compendium is on the smaller side, but it has a good roster.
I want to saw it might be Nocturne, but Nocturne has its weirdness with magic attack scaling making it so that you end up largely defaulting to physical or physical-adjacent skills and pierce in TDE. Weirdly less of an issue in OG Nocturne, but it probably still goes to Nocturne all the same.
I think it also depends on where you stand on demons leveling up vs. being largely disposable as temporary party members you fuse away frequently. Soul Hackers has some cool stuff going on, but you never really end up hanging onto your demons for long and are mostly just running with MC, Nemissa, and Zeed for most things. I think demon personalities are a cool mechanic though, and I'd like to see them tackle it again in the future.

I really don't understand why they stopped maintaining smt continuity in the nusona games.

Dazai was never bullied or out for revenge because of it and Yuzuru never changes his directive of protecting Tokyo, if anything he pushes his sister aside while she's still alive to pursue it. There is no doubt Lucifer was involved but as far as I know the game describes it as Lucifer simply telling Aogami "hey look a human is in danger, go over there" and the rest was up to him. Aogami also had memory loss on top of that but the only thing that was cut out of his memory was specifically working for Bethel. She did not die and her compendium says that explicitly. Her personality died and remained dead. The goddess took over instead when it awakened:

Here you can see the moment when she is possessed by the goddess within her and cut off mid sentence. This scene is in CoV and CoC.

In CoV part of her still remained and she says "I still feel like me". That is the difference with the original route. Instead of allowing her personality to die, she stays strong enough to survive. In this route no part of her dies at any point.

They're not exact copies but they were absolutely inspired by them. Dazai even gets a spiky haircut the moment he turns to power and both him and the Chaos Hero are moved by the desire to stop being weak losers.
Yuzuru is the less blatant of the two but he still counts as both of them in the base game are set up so that longtime fans will believe Yuzuru will side with Law while Dazai will side with Chaos due to their personalities only for the story to switch that around.

Pretty sure higher int makes negotiations work more often.
Might be anecdotal bias but in my later playthroughs of 1/2 I pumped int early and had a much easier time with it. Combat isn't hard enough that you need to go nuts with str from the word go(especially cause the weapon you use contributes so much of your damage on it's own) so I'd recommend putting some points in it.

And I'm surprised that was enough evidence for someone to say "megami tensei means she is the one referencing the first heroine, not anyone else". Yumiko is always going to be the first actual megami tensei. Think about it this way, is the original heroine of smt1 actually a goddess or just a woman of importance? And I'm not saying this to imply she's not the megami tensei, she just doesn't fit the title exactly despite fitting the role. It's not entirely accurate because she's not a goddess. If she is Eve and not just referencing it, that means she was always human. SMT2 and 3 have the same problem, you can't really tell who it's supposed to be exactly. i would argue both tao and yoko are based off the whole "megami tensei" deal in the series and tao even blatantly has the rising sun on her headdress to signify she is amaterasu.
and as much as her consciousness stays alive in CoV, her body was still revived and later the goddess reincarnated in her.

aogami is susanoo who also gets the whole reincarnation deal again, and yes he is very protective to the player character and says romantic things, but he does not have the gameplay role of the heroine and he himself feels like he has very little presence outside of psychological support. he is a power up for the protagonist and yes he can be some kind of daddy/mommy figure cause Kozuka said motherly aura blahblah but like i said, atlus would hammer it home until we're tired of it if he truly were the heroine. i get why jp players would say this jokingly or not, but in the end i don't see it.

Despite the story (or perhaps just my reading comprehension) absolutely sharting itself in the final act the gameplay alone made this a load of fun, easily the best soundtrack in the series so far and it's only competition is Megami Tensei 2. It's also up there with FF Tactics for the sheer number ear candy sound effects in a TRPG. They really used Stereo to it's fullest.
If I had more time I'd absolutely play this game again to get the other endings, maybe they make more sense. I think this is the first time where I didn't end up with Neutral in a game where I had options.
I'm also enjoying this trend of party demons getting to say their final farewells to you in the credits.
Next up is...

There are new quests and dialogues that directly refer to 199X even more explicitly than the original game so I don't get this complaint and when people brought it up it made me wonder if they experienced the game vicariously through twitter screenshots and youtube playthroughs.
I know people complain that the identity of the demon that posseses Kaya is revealed before the showdown with it but I didn't find it out of place with the new added dialogue and information, though it makes me wonder if they feared that its identity came out of nowhere in the original.

What I appreciated the most out of the new script is that they made it clear that Raido comes from the Showa era and what I didn't like was the excessive handholding, especially early on, though they make fun about it at some point. In general I actually like that the game has been made to be more in line with Raidou 2's tone and they gave the final boss the focus it deserved, in a way it was what I would have liked a possible remake to be like but there are some things still holding it down (like most demon models; I have come to hate Persona 5's HD demon models).

It's so evident in SMTVV where all the art styles converge and it reuses all the models they made so far plus more...
And even putting aside the different artstyles (for example, compare Oberon, who looks like a Kaneko character, to Titania, who looks like Soejima's), it annoys me how the new models made for VV have good looking body definition, where you can see where their muscles and bones would be whether the character is muscular or not. Meanwhile, Persona 5 models basically have tube limbs and muscles that mostly just stop at textures. They not just show their age, they also are part of a featureless artstyle that does not show true physical strength or lack of thereof (not to mention the lack of sex appeal). Compare how Mermaid, a flat woman, looks far sexier and substantial than any demoness who sadly got their first HD model in Persona 5, cursed to have pool noodle limbs like picrel. It feels disrespectful to older designs to see them done so dirty, especially compared to the gacha game (though I think that one still has some duds, like the goofy orange skinned Nocturne Thor).

I first noticed this with Gabriel's arms in SMTVV. It's so evident. It makes her look cheap instead of strong and she's not even supposed to be some kind of macho girl, just a normal woman.
I get that this is inevitable but I dislike it. Part of me hopes that future games will do more to fix these ugly models.
At least it was less evident in Raidou Remastered simply because you don't look at demons up close most of the time, but it always sucked to find a Persona 5 model and see it look even uglier than Remastered's new models, who most definitely are just souped up PS2 imports but those base PS2 models still looked better than Persona 5's.
