Honestly after reverie I stopped with English dub for trails. It was a good point to stop because it was the end of cold steel arc which I played in dub and enjoyed. But daybreak 1 dub just isn’t good to me too many bad castings and novice vas. Rean and Van are both shit just for different reasons. Rean has the shittiest character interactions in the entire series and he constantly puts me to sleep with how dull he is whenever the plot is not intensely focusing on him. However he does get the most fleshed out character arc of any protagonist which would be great if it wasn't 1% of 500hrs worth of games and wasn't constantly repeating itself. Van has good interactions with people and can make me smile with the shit he says but hes also the most utterly irrelevant main character in the entire series to the point that you have to question why he's even in the games after Kuro 1 which is the absolute last thing you want of a protagonist. Kuro 1 is probably the best kiseki combat has ever been. The addition of the real time battles to filter through the trash was a great addition. The only problem is that falcom keeps adding overpowered mechanics with each new entry power creeping the game. hopefully the sky remake makes nightmare difficult again. the absence of master quartz leaves a massive gap in stats that could be enough to balance it out but who knows.

It's gonna be funny seeing opinion turn on the og Sky versions as time goes on. Games that were perfectly fine for 20+ years will suddenly be seen as jank outdated boomershit that only masochists play. Happens every time.

Calvard's gameplay is pretty boring because of arc feather. It's something every single character should have which makes everyone really homogenised. The best from worst arcs for combat in Kiseki are
1. Cold Steel
2. Crossbell
3. Calvard
4. Sky
Cold Steel's combat is easy to break but it's generally fun to build characters, plus mech fights have some challenge to them. The big three phase fights while tiring also helped reduce the impact of having a few broken characters forcing you to build more of the cast. A little too easy at times, especially CS2 but it's the best looking at the arc as a whole.
Crossbell is basically Sky's combat but better balanced and more fun. The reason it's not at the top is because it feels like the game basically forces you to run evasion tank Lloyd on Nightmare in Azure making the big boss fights a little samey where it's Lloyd keeping the boss busy while everyone else pelts the boss with arts. The final boss being an exception and a pretty good boss fight.
Calvard's combat has problems like action combat trivialising enemies, immensely spammable S Crafts (in Kuro 1), returning to being more of an arts focused game where you mostly want to spam one or two arts depending on the resistance and crafts generally aren't great unless they're a support craft or you're Grendel.
Sky's gameplay gets harmed by the existence of Hard and Nightmare bloating stats without really caring too much about the end result. It arguably has the most repetitive combat, revolving around Earth Wall. They also made the basic single target arts too powerful for it's own good or should have buffed the strength of other arts. One of your best options during the game shouldn't be the basic single target arts. Crafts are also at their most useless until Third starts to balance arts and crafts better, Enemies are also too vulnerable to status ailments. It shouldn't be so easy to Chaos Brand enemies during a lot of boss fights to shut down the boss.

The xseed translations of sky were a very grassroot effort. It was basically a bunch of friends that somehow convinced marvelous to fund a localization of one of the holy grails of obscure jrpgs back then. The story and drama behind actually translating sky 1 and 2 was such a nightmare that its amazing it was never cancelled. Funnily enough most of the core people involved into getting the falcom projects going are long gone. Tom went off to Japan and I think he's an english teacher there or something and Hatsuu just followed kiseki over to nisa. Not sure how much Sara was involved with getting the falcom games under xseed but she's still working there as a programmer.

Hatsuu back in those days basically changed things to make adjustments based on her knowledge of the series to make it fit the game better rather than adding fanfiction. She was very obsessive about it and it wasn't an easy job with it having long hours but she didn't really have the most power back then. She also wasn't involved with Kiseki until FC's PC Port. Really, the unsung hero that people don't mention too much nowadays is Jessica Chavez. She was the main editor of Sky and was basically in constant crunch mode the whole time for FC, working 14 hours a day for 6 days out of 7 in a week. When Carpe Fulgur fucked up she was the person that over two months had to fix their incorrect formatting of their translation, and then when XSEED took back the reins she was contracted to edit about half the game which was about the same amount of words as FC in two thirds of the time she edited FC while fixing all of the typos and terminology mistakes while tweaking the dialogue.

3 games in and I'm still not sure how I feel about Van. He's not all that interesting of a character and it's pretty annoying that he somehow knows everybody in the series despite basically being a nobody. He just feels really forced along with his backstory even.

I don't think there was really anything bad about Kuro 1 aside from the typical Falcom padding and bloat. Calvard had a pretty decent start even if it was a bit uneventful and aimless. Kuro 2 however was just utter dog shit. The stories and material itself was interesting but it should have not taken up an entire game of the Calvard arc. Those stories are reserved for another 3rd or Reverie type game. And Kai being a desperate rebranding is kind of pathetic coming from Falcom. They want to show everybody that they are taking the story seriously now but yet still can't be bothered to give us competent pacing.

A lot of it is just giving insufficient care to English sentence structure. This for example is a bad translation of 「覚悟はできてんでしょーね!?」 Prepare for what? Any localization that changes the personality of the character is bad localization no matter how a person enjoys it. The point of localization is to translate said media so it can reach more audience, that's it. For me, a localizer thinking they can do better than the original author is pure hubris, no matter how good the dialog is.

Daybreak 1 and 2 are examples of this. Van is more goofy and is comedic and jokey in situations where he’s serious. He’s 10 times more rude than he was in jp script. Feri no longer talks like she works in a jaegar corp she sounds like a kid grown up in a city which she wasn’t. Agnes says a lot more DEI stuff like “I am my own women” when the line was supposed to be “I’ll support you”. Daybreak 2 punches it up even worse

We are ok with localizations we just don’t want localizers to use it to come up with their comedy routine. Everytime a character in daybreak games say something serious instead it’s replaced with a joke. The translators are fine it’s the editors that aren’t. People like carpe fulgar, hatsuu, and the guy that did daybreak 2 localization

The arguments against faithful localization are ofter misrepresented as the 'boring' and literal translations, while NISA localization is described as fun and animated. It's not actually limited to Falcom and Gungho but localization in general. Faithful localization doesn't necessarily mean literal or boring, an exciting and emotional AND faithful script can be done. The problem with NISA is, while sure they have more emotional dialog, they also have immersion breaking lines, politically charged dialog and changing the personality of characters.

Localizations are fine and sometimes they have to come up with stuff I get it, but these localizers do it at moments where they don’t need to do it. They are acting like they are the writers for how these characters should act.

I do not mean literal translations, I meant faithful localization which means finding the best way to translate the dialog.
