Most of these organizations were involved with or related to the military. Swiss agriculture was also an option, but obviously not what Mercy was interested in. Overwatch, by chance, was considered a qualifying organization. Overwatch was contracted by post Omnic Crisis version of NATO, and as a result was contractually obligated to help defend Switzerland if called upon. Mercy applied to join Overwatch as a pre-med intern. Overwatch had a very large medical services program, and needed field medics. Mercy was accepted into Overwatch with the stipulation that she would serve as a field medic part-time.

Over time Moira began to push Mercy's boundaries until they were gone altogether. They shared a toxic and sexually violent relationship. Moira used Mercy for pleasure constantly, and Mercy was in constant fear of abuse. As this was happening, Moira was performing additional research that she kept secret from Mercy. Moira was developing tools to physically suck the lifeforce out of other people. She committed multiple heinous crimes to accomplish this, and Mercy accidentally discovered everything.
