It's not retarded it's engaging and the RNG loottables for said points is another layer of engagement. There's mining nodes that only drops earth stones and other trash while there's a few that drops machalites. You learn them, build a set around them and do gathering run to get your upgrades.

All my favorite weapons got gutted and are borderline obsolete. Not just damage wise, but general feel and playstyle too.

I think they're in a tough spot with difficulty because how exactly do you make a game like monhun more difficult without the basics (health up, damage up, speed up)? You could give them more moves and they have done that but if you add too many new moves it practically becomes a new monster and it'll feel overwhelming to most players to have to basically relearn every fight. They're definitely making it even harder on themselves by giving players more tools every game though

Well ultimately it's going to boil down to a choice between making tutorials better or just making the game more accessible by letting people bypass certain mechanics. I think the reason they're not trying with tutorials anymore is because they already tried that in older games. The gen 1/2 games do try their best to explain things to you like you're a retard and hell even as late as 4U I remember them bombarding you with tutorial stuff. I think once the game becomes complex beyond a certain point people aren't going to want to sit through like an hour of tutorials to understand the game because monhun has a lot of moving parts. Is there a mechanic in Wilds where hitting certain monsters with certain elements in certain areas causes a stagger?
I've noticed now that I'm using elemental CB more that hitting Nu Udra's head area with water SAEDs cause him to stagger and flop out. I've also noticed on Lagiacrus with fire SAEDs. They always seem to be "discharged" after that, lagi can't do his lightning aftershocks and nu udra stops being on fire.

It's a fine game. Locales are far more forgettable than Worlds for two reasons: the Seikret being mandated for traversal (it can't even glide over any annoying terrain) and forced walking sections preventing you from exploring yourself.
The biggest problem Wilds faces is with just the paltry amount of monsters so far. That's a fixable problem.
Pukei and Kulu were so standout among flagship monsters, and Rotten Vale/Coral Highlands were gorgeous landscapes that you could get lost in just taking in the beauty of the world. Wilds doesn't have a real standout locale yet, could be the Seikret rearing it's head again because maps aren't getting the proper development time. No shot somebody saw a spiral staircase and thought that was a good idea for the already forgettable desaturated guardian area. I do wish that Wilds had more environmental and monster color. Maybe in the expansion.
