If it was my choice, someone should review all of the IDW comics for characterization in retrospect.
Look for any character traits that only exist in IDW and weren't established elsewhere.
Fire the writer in question for their disrespect. Show that thee characters matter. That this is a game franchise, not a headcanon farm.

That's not entirely accurate, Mr. Anon. I self-inserted as Mr. Tails when I was much younger but I don't particularly self-insert as any character these days.
It's not that I necessarily 'dislike' Mr. Sonic and Ms. Amy being together in the abstract. I like some depictions of Mr. Sonic and Ms. Amy, especially in fan works, I just wouldn't ever want it to happen in the games because it'd require fundamental changes to Mr. Sonic's character. It would feel inconsistent with previous depictions of Mr. Sonic's reactions to Ms. Amy's advances. I wouldn't necessarily have an issue with it if the movies showcased the couple, especially because the movies' Mr. Sonic is not the wind. In fact, I am currently writing a fanfiction on commission that will feature the couple because it's what my clientele desires.
My opinions on Ms. Amy as a whole are... complicated. Up until very recently I had a mostly positive perception of Ms. Amy, but the more I've thought about the games and the actions she actually takes in them, I realized that I let headcanon and recent retcons blind me to her actual character as it was depicted in previous titles. And after staring down what her actual character is? I don't think Ms. Amy Rose and her original personality really works for SEGASonic the Hedgehog stories. She takes the focus away from fun and adventure and onto cringeworthy shipcourse and inspires some of the most toxic fans in this franchise. Who have created a culture of harassment all out of sympathizing with this pathetic narrative jobber... Now as for current Ms. Amy? She's fine, but a retcon (which I am uncertain if I'm comfortable with).

If there is one thing to praise Fred for, it's his outright hatred of Sonic X and Masaki's writing.

Ian writing Sonic ooc when he first joined Archie was excusable. He was not there to write Sonic, he was there to write Archie Sonic. And Archiefags loved him

When the reboot rolled around, Flynn not only continued to write Sonic ooc, he wrote all of the non canon characters ooc too.
At the time this was strange but easy to ignore. The comic was already taking great measures to be more like the games. This should have been the first red flag.


When IDW started, Ian had Sonic decline hanging around the Resistance while staying his character bio out loud to the tune of It Doesn't Matter. This was a massive red flag. He was having Sonic state his character instead of actually writing it. Sonic would go on to spend an uncharacteristic amount of time at the Restoration.

Seven years later. Things are not better. Ian Flynn failed us. Archiefags gaslit the fandom into thinking he's some hero who "really gets it". The truth is he doesn't get it. He doesn't want to get it. He wants to write his own fanfics and get paid for it

Ian never loved Sonic. He loved Archie Sonic. Tw love years ago he was forced to kill the Sonic he grew up on. Now his passion is dead.

Sonic Forces is canon, but only the Japanese version of it is. JP media will virtually always take priority over Western media. This doesn't mean said media is always flawless, or that it's immune to criticism, or that the Japanese are perfect writers. On the whole, Japanese writers are far more accurate than Western writers, and they understand character nuances better. That said, Sonic Forces did not have a good story. I will not defend it as good. And yet, as per usual, said story is even worse in the English translation. Because gaijin always make JP media worse.

Sonic is a Japanese franchise.

It represents the earliest and perhaps worst form of "western poison," a complete divergence from the character's core. Mr. Sonic is the wind. A world already completely conquered by Mr. Robotnik is a world where the wind has failed. This premise is a foundational error from which no story can recover.
The comic presents a "resistance fighter" Mr. Sonic, a concept that seems to perpetually infect western writing. It is a narrative crutch. The Kintobor origin story is flawed deviation, adding needless complexity where none was required. At least SatAM, AoSTH, and Archie didn't bother with that drivel. The most egregious fault, however, is Mr. Sonic's characterization as an outright bully to Mr. Tails. This is not a complex dynamic. It is simply poor writing that misunderstands their bond of mutual admiration.

One can hardly be surprised that its online continuation is a parade of further misinterpretations. Mr. Jet is reduced to a mere cheater, stripped of his pride. Ms. Cream being depicted as a tech-savvy pirate who works for a villain is, to put it politely, nonsensica and wildly misunderstands the character's love of justice and windy civilian nature. And their understanding of Mr. Shadow is predictably shallow and stripped of depth. It is quite amusing, however, that they accidentally wrote Ms. Blaze to be more "like the wind" than their own version of Mr. Sonic. It seems even they recognized on some level that their protagonist was a failure, and that the antithesis to them would be alike the real Sonic the Hedgehog.

That Ms. Evan Stanley is an admirer of this continuity explains a great deal about the current state of the IDW comics. The obsession with resistance narratives and the consistent fumbling of established characters are not new problems. They are the continuation of a legacy of misunderstanding what makes Mr. Sonic, Mr. Sonic the Hedgehog.

I know that Fleetway fans try to act like their comic is inspired by Doctor Who, but they fail to understand why Doctor Who writing works for Sonic.

They just fuck up Metal Sonic's whole concept into being an army of robots and then tell you "See it is just like the Daleks!" when it only has a slight few similarities.

All of the self contained stories here feel like they accomplish nothing because of the need to maintain the status quo that still has Eggman ruling. It sucks.
