It would have helped if Starfield, their first original IP in decades, wasn’t set in the most lifeless, boring, sterile, corporatized, safe for kids dogshit slop setting and world ever seen in the sci fi genre. Seriously, this game’s world building is dogshit. It inspires nothing. No character ever goes beyond feeling like β€œcorporate stock video game character”. Nothing in the plot or setting ever feels surprising or daring or bold. It’s absolutely lifeless. That’s why the game is doomed to fail. They’d have to completely reset and rewrite the entire thing from scratch if they want to actually make Starfield anything more than a forgotten footnote that got shit on.

There is a mod that enables your ship to achieve ludicrous speed that does let you fly to different planets in the system seamlessly, so it is one gigantic space. But the planets and bodies themselves are just huge rudimentary models with no collision or anything, and nothing actually spawns (eg space debris, asteroids, enemies etc) outside of very small specific boxes in the orbit of planets that you spawn into automatically by using the fast travel menu.

We ask ourselves this about scientology. There also seems to actually be something to the great serpent shit.

The dirt roads are stupid but at the same time look at russia, china, and south america which have dirt roads in large settlements in backwater areas. Dirt roads aren't really necessary or restrict you from doing anything.

On the ashta I think the settlement isn't that old and the government is ineffective by design. The fc are basically minarchists that don't give a fuck about providing public services like wildlife management which also explains the lack of paved roads.

No, because that would require me to have high expectations of Bethesda, which apparently neither of us share. It’s more just dumbfounded that they were able to accidentally write into the worldbuilding a narrative set up that would have been a vastly better alternative route for the main story - and then went with something insanely more lame and retarded instead. It’d be like Tolkien taking the events of the Lord of the Rings and rather than making it the main focus wrote it in as vaguely referenced background fluff for a story about hobbits going on a mundane hike.

Another point i wanted to add is that all old world religions were disproven. Islam, Christianity, Judaism give very specific prophecy and expectations for the future which were thrown out the window with the earth becoming uninhabitable. This leaves open a vacuum for a new religion and paradigm.

Judaism would be thoroughly rekt most likely on account of their obsession with material land and temple being so tantamount to their religious beliefs and claims. Christianity wouldn’t be affected really. The entire point of divine revelation is that the world to come is all that matters, there isn’t a physical place or location in the material realm that’s divine or significant which would render the religion invalid if it were to be destroyed. There is no definitive future prophecy in Christianity; Revelation is read differently and on many different levels depending on the sect and wouldn’t become moot due to Earth’s destruction. As long as humans are still around Christianity would be valid. Not familiar with Islamic theology much but I’m sure they’d find some way to cope as well on a similar level since I don’t think they have quite as much of an obsession with physical places either compared to Judaism, though I guess there is Mecca to contend with

Biblical prophecy entails "the nations" and a "table of nations" and temple centered in Jerusalem in both Christianity, Judaism and to an extent Islam. Islam predicts a Mahdi who will rule Arabia while Isa rules from Jerusalem. Christianity focuses on a spiritual kingdom sure but still anticipates the continued existence of the current worldly order and nations until the second coming. The Jewish view is basically the expectation Christians have for the antichrist with a false 3rd temple in Jerusalem and the Islamic view is similar to the Christian view. Everything would have to be reinterpreted heavily. The only type of Christianity I see surviving is new age unitarian crap that isn't concerned with literal truth and Islam would be done. The great serpent shit is a perfect opportunity to swoop in and gobble up all of these people looking for a new source of meaning and context for this new age of humanity.

There is no physical temple whatsoever prophesied or believed to be important in Christianity outside of insane modern Evangelical heresy that tries to push the idea of β€œjudeo Christian”. β€œNations” would just refer to people groups in general, and wouldn’t require literal Earth-bound countries to still exist.

Scientology is a relatively small cult that tries to keep its craziness and abuses in house. Tom Cruise isn't running around screaming about Xenu and SAG isn't forcing random people to do their dumb thetan test thing at gunpoint. The closest equivalent to the openly nutty and totalitarian Va'ruun is hardcore Islam. Its not hard to imagine a cult rising to power in an isolated space colony, but its the writers job to explain how that happens and all they really did was "Jinan was popular and then spacefaring people decided to adopt clan structures, sacrifice goats and kill nonbelievers".

You can do that kind of. If you start in the orbit of one planet and fly to another one (using console commands to make your ship faster so it doesn't take a month) the game will recognize that you've entered a different orbit and show the new planet in your map screen. They were working on these systems before launch and are most likely finally going back to finish them. I assume they will be adding a new type of booster or something that will allow you to reach other planets in a minute or two.

Only difference is Skyrim is a fantasy game so the magic powers are far more coherent with the setting and it has a huge bedrock of lore to build off from to make this more compelling and to add additional layers to the story (civil war and mortal powers clashing while all this is going on)

Starfield has no lore, is tonally and conceptually at odds with the entire set up, and has nothing else happening in the backdrop of these events. It’s Skyrim’s storyline but totally stripped down. It’s almost like Bethesda initially tried to do something new that fit with the setting, couldn’t land on anything so just reverted to the Skyrim set up as a fail safe

So is Starfield new and original or is it a rehash of old ground? The former was the original argument I thought, for why it would have been a bad idea to set the game during the war between the factions and making that the narrative focal point instead, even though it would have been far more exciting and would allow them to tell an epic story in a strictly sci fi frame without space magic and fantasy being at the center

at best POIs/random encounter generation will be added to star system worldspaces in the next big update to go with the updates to space travel
Maybe making the orbit to surface transition seamless (probably an animation that acts a hidden load screen while it transitions to a surface map and streams it all in, which they did previously in FO4 with elevator transitions)
Traversable planets maybe since they were already working on laying groundwork for that with the vehicle update upping the playable size of generated landing zones but prob not in the next update

Being original is overrated. There is no need to subvert and change plot structure constantly to be inventive and new, especially not when you’re trying to establish a new universe. My point is that either way it wouldn’t have been any more or less original or inventive anyway from a conceptual standpoint; but one certainly offers a much better opportunity to tell a compelling story within a standard framework.

Oh shut up. Starfield isn't a very good game, and thats the only reason you need. Starbros constantly trying to reach for ANY other reason than that to explain the low sales and low player counts when the answer is so fucking simple. None of this "well normies just want action shooty shooty" as if Starfield didn't try and fail to do that. "Well normies just don't appreciate deep slow experiences" as if there aren't entire quests that consist of nothing but conversations in Cyberpunk. Like, shut the fuck up.

You’re telling me New Vegas (released 2010) gets consistently higher concurrent player counts than Starfield (released 2023??)

Lmao you fucking retards still don’t get it. What you think if Bethesda just licensed a new engine suddenly the devs would be able to make genius tier shit and flawlessly do everything they actually wanted to? The DEVS at Bethesda are who suck, not the game engine or tech or anything else, the DEVS suck and are not skilled or talented enough to do what they need to.

New Vegas came out in 2010 and solo modders were able to introduce drivable cars, tanks, planes and helicopters in shit tier teenaged Gamebryo, mean while Bethesda couldn’t manage to get a basic buggy vehicle ready by the time Starfield launched.

I did years ago. They've condensed a lot of it down.
The code is still in there, you can speed up running and adjust jump height for example.
Problem is it still has clunky movement and shit animation that feels very much the same as old morrowind.
Starborn powers are just hotkey oblivion spells.
Yes, they've tried to modernize things over the years, but at its core its still old clunky.

Starfield should have had a more ME1 style system with the procedural planet stuff. Ie have 4 or 5 really big handcrafted maps, maybe half the size of Skyrim each, focused around a genuinely large city full of its own points of interests, quests, dungeons etc that operate like an entire game world from their other games would. Then have the procedural stuff be clearly separated for the point of building outposts and getting resources. as it is it feels like they kind of half assed it, so they have individual cities that are around the same scope as cities in their other games, and then just… procedural stuff everywhere else.

Then they had to put the four studios on Wastelanders, then Covid, then MSFT bought them. Plus a new IP. It was not like it was a smooth process
