This is the inevitable culmination of what are objectively bad business decisions on SE's part, Yoshi has hinted at the team being underfunded, overworked, and understaffed multiple times in the last year.

Not to mention, early 2023/late 2022 IIRC they nuked all their overseas teams as well, and SE in general has had issues with hiring and retaining talent, because they only hire Japanese, but as literally the entire world knows, there aren't many Japanese devs, its not a big industry over there. (a lot of people don't know this, but nearly all software dev / engineering is pretty much dead in Japan despite the "huuu so technologically advanced" perception of westerners, they aren't, they're stuck in 2003, and it isn't by choice)

To me, them putting the game on this severe of a backburner tells me its definitely not a priority for them, and they want to sunset it.

I don't know how this community will hold between 7.5 and 8.0, especially given it'll be approximately another 10 month gap in content. This is on-top of the content droughts from the delayed patch cycle. Sure, we might have Occult Crescent 2.0 and the Deep Dungeon to keep us occupied, but... that's not going to hold us for 10+ months.

There's already the possibility of the next Ultimate being on the chopping block by Yoshida's disastrous language in that Monster Hunter article. Even if that Ultimate comes out, that's only going to keep raiders' attentions for... what? A month to three months at max? Once people clear that, they're all going to fuck off and unsubscribe.

So, unless they have something else up their sleeve to keep us entertained, I don't see how Square Enix is expecting us to stay subscribed for 1.5 years.

If you want to draw casuals back into the mix, you need to bait the hook with something they already care about. Nobody gave a single shit about anyone or anything in Dawntrail, with the slightly exception of Sphene who got a free pass because "at least the girl is cute".

Building up a new story for us to care about is good, but we also need to be enticed with a promise of something people already like to get casuals hopeful again. The scions alone don't do that for us anymore, because we've spent too much time with them with no breaks, and DT sort of gave us the impression that these characters exist to do nothing but take up space now. We need to put at least half of the scions on a bus for a while and focus on other characters, whether that mean bringing back NPCs who still have unresolved story arcs or new characters to try and built up as people are are invested in.

The EASY answer is to finish up our set up "First and Void" thing, which would mean hanging out with Ryne, Gaia, Zero, and others again. Thats a sufficiently scattershot hit of characters from more beloved times that we probably have something for everyone. I'm not sure that we can make an entire expansion out of that alone, but its something that needs to be at least a patch storyline or a raid series.

Chaotic Alliance Raid was an absolute fucking slog in party finder, it was entirely too easy for a single person out of the 24 to mess up one mechanic and wipe the entire run as it spiraled to death very quickly. I would prefer if dungeons shifted on a more criterion-like dungeon design and they ditched the current brainless corridor with forced walls, circle arenas and trash that doesn't do anything. Things like patrols, enviromental hazzards and puzzles to be baseline and a way to make dungeons actually be different from each other outside from just the bosses and the backround.

I personally think while the game was hard carried by it's story it always had decent gameplay. It's just a shame that they removed all uniqueness from the jobs and made them interchangeable for balance. They can keep the game alive if they learned from what people hated in Dawntrail and steer away from the homogenization of jobs to appease a small percentage of the player base.
