I think Lagiacrus is genuinely the only well designed monster in the game both from a combat standpoint and in regards to the overall systems surrounding it. It's the only monster in the game that feels rare enough that the season system matters somewhat and that I ever feel incentivized to do multiplayer quests for because even just getting an investigation for it is a crapshoot. More of Milds' content should have been like this.

I fought a 5 purple star 6* Tempered Gravios in an Investigation and it was a pathetic bitch that got stunlocked the whole time and tripped up by wounds and I beat it in 4 minutes with a shit weapon that only hits blue sharpness. By comparison's sake, the 3 purple star 8* Tempered Gravios in the event quest is indeed a lot more durable, particularly because it doesn't open wounds anywhere near as much. Big attacks like the laser beams deal reasonable amounts of damage instead of putting you in 6HKO range like the 6* version as well.

Overall it was still a weak bitch, because the monster is much slower overall, only attacks in linear, predictable fashion and player weapons - especially ones that can guard - are just 100x more powerful than in any previous game by default, so this is still a pretty boring monster, but it did take me like 14 minutes to kill one with the same gear so that's a substantial improvement. It's at least harder than 9* rey dau and uth duna.

I think it mostly comes down to monhun hitting the mainstream before dark souls. When souls hit the big time in the 2010s most games were pretty easy so people were dying for difficulty. Monhun hit the big time a little before that when people were still more concerned with making games more intuitive and accessible. There's also just a difference in marketing. Souls wears difficulty like a badge of honor while monhun marketing focuses more on the wow factor. Then you could also probably point to design factors within the games themselves.

But now, GL is THE baby weapon.
It's what I'd recommend to a friend who was just starting the series with wilds.
Insane damage, easy moveset (realistically only need to learn one high dmg burst combo and repeat it ad infinitum), and as with many other weapons, focus mode made it absolutely trivial to land everything. Plus you're immortal as long as you have stamina.
This needs to be offset with a nerf to damage or tighter/slower counters.
All of the positioning and prediction it required in previous titles is gone, making it one of the strongest currently.

But gunlance benefited the most from this (along with GS), since it's damage was always high, it was just challenging to set it up.
Moves done in focus mode (except for wound breaking ones) should do less damage.
Players could then choose between sure hits with less damage or ones requiring skill and positioning for higher damage.

It's because mainline is made for newcomers and I'm not even joking. The last 4 mainline games were explicitly designed for new players while the last mainline game to be made for veteran players was dos because that just built off of the first game. Tri was a soft reboot with a lot of marketing and drastic changes, 4U introduced mounting (which was the start of introducing mechanics to make things easier for new players) as well as putting way more emphasis on the story, world was another soft reboot with drastic changes and lots of marketing, and of course wilds has made things even more accessible with focus mode among other things. I think they realized after 2 gens of mainline selling less than portable that vets weren't really interested in what mainline wanted to do (namely introduce big new ideas and drastic changes) so they pivoted mainline to appeal mostly to people who had never played monhun before. That's why mainline progression is so bizarre with every other game basically reworking everything and then constantly dropping ideas like dropping underwater for 2 gens and seasons for 3 gens. If you look at portable the only really big jump is 4th gen because everything else just builds off the previous game. Mainline is for onboarding new players

The difference lies in the retention of OTHER/REGULAR players (which all disappear 3 days after an update), the ratio of "regular hunters":"goontroons", the actual content of the game not incentivizing replayability so the "regular hunters":"goontroons" ratio shifts massively to the latter because there's fuckall to hunt. Even the "goontroons" from previous games were expected some level of competence, the games used to allow for an opportunity to show off and specialize with a weapon and against a monster, now all you can show off is boobies and ass. In Wilds, an /mhg/ party is no different than a random shitter party when it comes to skill-expression, except in the fact that the latter bends over to show modded naked ass. Their damage is laughable compared to the melee weapons, but at the same time they are incredibly fragile, just as you said.
Compare HBG being the fastest speedrun clearer in rise and world, to constantly being 13-10th currently (depending on how meta hammer is).
Consistent damage means nothing when there is just not enough of it.
If a gunner can shoot for 10 seconds and do the same amount of damage a db user could do in 3, that's not good design.
Putting a shield on the hbg basically doomed it to the most boring playstyle of them all. Spread.
In sunbreak, if you put on a power barrel it was clear what you had to do.
Make distance and aim well, predict gap closers etc. Now the game forces you into close quarter combat, which makes pierce ammo useless, no recoil decos mean you're basically not attacking any faster than most melee users while doing less damage, and if god forbid you don't perfect guard a single attack, you're dead.
There is currently absolutely nothing good about the HBG, and that's a crying shame.
