All the supposedly "evil" companions were always written to have some sort of redemption arc at some point. This was apparent even back in EA. A character who starts unambiguously evil and remains unambiguously evil isn't particularly interesting. This is partly due to the nature of an RPG that should allow the player to feel like they can influence the world and the people within it ("fix" them), and partly because change is a requirement of story. If no change happens, what was the point of the story? If a character is the exact same by the end as they were when you met them, what was the point of the game? There's a reason very few players prefer murderhobo Dark Urge, Vlaakith-sworn Lae'zel, or Sharranheart.

Just download a mod that gives a class a feat every level, and then only have Tav use the class. If you're prone to multiclassing, then there's not really much you can do besides just directly editing your character.

Minthara gets about as close to "redemption" as possible for someone who was at the top of drow society if you just recruit her. She realizes right away she can't ever go back to Menzoberranzan while Lolth's power structure stands and takes the logical step of treating her as an enemy from then on. In the non-romanced ending where she survives, she goes to start a rebel movement in the Underdark.

I should have been more precise - all the supposedly "evil" companions (origins) were always written to have a redemption arc. It's effective for characters such as Lae'zel and Shadowheart because these two are young, have been manipulated for their entire lives, go through a crisis of faith, have their whole worldviews upended, and that's all very dramatic and compelling. Minthara also experiences change, perhaps no less dramatic, because she is forced to lose two things that were central to her previous identity - her faith in Lolth and her place in House Baenre. It's just given less attention because she's not an origin and more of a hidden companion.

Which one is more worthwhile. Hiring a Hireling and disguising them as Alfira to pretend she's in your party, or Wyll?

Well then, I'll bite:

See, I don't really agree with this statment: ie, all Origin companions have some sort of trauma and or "original sin" to redeem themselves from, and one could argue that in broad terms, Shadowheart and Lae'zel's stories are very similar: if one works, the other will too. And our dear companions, they ALL share this.
At times it feels like having big group therapy sessions, Tav is a very passive character in this sense, while playing Durge ALSO puts you among the "broken and the damned" so to speak, and that's when finally someone listens to us, the player. Playing BG3 as Tav is "fun", but they have no real backstory, motifs, or anything comparable to other Origin characters.
What I'm trying to say is that, after a good number of playthroughts, these characters' tropes and stories become a little...boring in the long run, if the player can't do anything but listen.

But anyways, while Durge is still redeemable, I like how Minthara on the other hand will stay true to herself and her Evil alignment. And still, after confronting Orin there's a little scene that probably not many players will see, which opens a window into the rich inner world of this failed drow princess, but which leaves the player with meta-narrative and playful questions that few other characters in the history of gaming are able to raise.

So no, I think evil characters can be interesting: Ethel is also cool, Raphael is very cool, and Cazador was too before learning about Vellioth.

I don't see the point of them, it's not like you can lose companions very easily, it frankly takes some very deliberate effort to lose a companion, let alone enough that you are unable to fill your party.
Considering that companions are also not locked into their classes, means that you can build your party as you like.

I guess it was deemed a necessary feature early on when companions might have been more easy to lose (Act 1 has the most options to lose a companion) but as the game changed, they simply did not bother to cut them.
One must be a real hater of the companion cast that you favor literal nobodies over them.

How so? There are plenty of very appealing options that justify a Wizard 1 dip and the ability to scribe spells, especially when competing against weak Druid spells. Would you rather summon a Planar Ally or cast Sunbeam? How about casting Artistry of War once per short rest? Scrolls are not as reliable or even equivalent. If they were, Wizard 1 wouldn't be a popular dip.

Rogue 1 is entirely justifiable from a roleplay perspective, even more so when the main class gets its last relevant feature at level 10, meaning the possibility of two 1-level dips. The game is not all combat, and having Expertise in your chosen CHA skill makes the experience much smoother.

Im going to blow your mind with this one. If you dip 1 level into sorc, you get ITS constitution/charisma saving throw instead of your clerics wisdom/charisma one. This makes respeccing 1 sorc level to be your first level very potent since you get that constitution prof that is critical to keep concentration going.
