AR is pretty solid among the base weapon types when leaving out any influence from the operative wielding it. It's just that nearly every AR user so far is a skill spammer or support.

Shotgun: Strongest base weapon, especially for crushing destructible parts, reloading is basically not an issue, range is the only real limit
SMG: Would be the best damaging weapon type, but held back by its high Ricochet chance
AR: Lower damage output is offset by its lower ricochet chance and better accuracy than SMG, good destructible object damage too
Pistol: Overall weak, often an accessory to skill focused characters
Sniper: Weakest weapon type by a mile from sheer slowness, but most sniper ops have some gimmick that amps the damage
In a theoretical mode where all you had was the weapon to fight with, I'd want the AR.
