I appreciate that those dudes sniped the EP translation from CJ to make sure it actually got released at ALL, as opposed to never.
But its kind of a subpar translation, the further you go the more stilted and low quality the dialogue gets. The first half of the games script compared to the second half feels like it was done by two different groups entirely, maybe they just got weary over time and settled with just totally literal stiff translations instead of putting more effort in to make it read well. This is not an exaggeration I promise, 80% of the text boxes in the 2nd half of the game have multiple ellipses in them and are weirdly fragmented because they're sticking so hard to the original japanese sentence structure.

Imagine a musuo game but with actual lieutenant management. Like Persona Strikers but your other officers (demons) whom you can give direct orders too while pushing your side of the map (and even complete strategems like in Dynasty Warriors 8 for big spells; whether its a magatsuhi skill or a way for mid level demons to collect their power into a Mamudobarion/Megidolaon). Really play into Tokyo being a war zone with demons and humans. There could even be an open world angle taking inspiration from Assassin's Creed Revelations, DW9, or Shadows of War depending on how you want things to be handled outside of battle.

Perhaps make it where the infantry you slay have essence of their race and that helps with making fusions without making. This way it isn't just officer assassination while keeping fusions around. Recruiting officers to join you could still be a thing too, probably basing it off of reducing morale (use of strategems/beating infantry/capturing bases to showcase you're the real deal) with sharing alignment probably lessening how broken their will has to be.

I have come to the conclusion that this game is kino and a hidden gem. I'm not even out of the starting area yet and I can't remember the last time I've laughed so much when playing vidya. It doesn't look very good to me, they've made questionable to bad rewrites of the plot, the artstyle and colors of the original are almost entirely scrubbed in favour of more highly saturated light tones and they've done the sega remake meme of increasing the amount of green in the game by huge amount. They've censored some demons including lamia, who has appeared in games with a 3D model uncensored for fucking decades until this arbitrary moment. Nothing I've heard about the gameplay sounds like so significant an improvement either, people keep acting like the new raidou spells and moves are a groundbreaking addition as if its not actually just slightly altered mechanics that WERE in the original but removed. Its not additions, its equivalent exchange. The new raidou elemental spells are just a shuffled version of the elemental bullets with the resource management aspect removed and the other new raidou abilities are just equivalents to the demon combo moves they removed from 1, they even work on cooldown like those.
The most I can say is if you're a demon obsessed autist and you really just wanna play it with more demons maybe you could go for it, I almost considered purchasing it on those grounds. But I've already played the original and I don't think its worth it at the current price.
Waiting for that shit to be at least half price or more on CDkeys or something and for a decent amount of mods to be out before I consider it a worthwhile purchase

Gameplay is better than the original but that's not saying much considering what the original is actually like, basically a fleshed out and modernized Raidou 2. Graphical improvements are alright at best and at worst stiff and lifeless, though the fully rendered 3D environments are nice. Somewhat overpriced despite the big overhaul, so get it during a sale, buy it used, or just pirate it if you're not that desperate to play it. The worst parts are the weird story rewrites that vary from "this was probably changed to avoid ruffling any feathers" to "just what the fuck were they thinking?"

Actually they did fix that, while they still have a lot of HP, most bosses are faster to kill than in the original.

I would've given props for not making the light world just as packed with encounters as the dark realm, which was another of my genuine issues from the original I would have been happy to see fixed normally (and was happy raidou 2 fixed). But in exchange they just plopped in a demon symbol system that also didn't particularly appeal to me, and the gameplay I saw made it looked like they didn't even have active hitboxes and would only trigger encounters if you actively attacked them rather then just touching them.

There's no random encounter in the human world anymore (except for the Training Halls who exist for that purpose of course).
Dark world has on-field enemies that appear randomly instead of random encounter.

They do but if they're not aggro they need to stay in contact with Raidou for an entire second before triggering a battle.
It's instant if they are aggro though.
The game was overall made much easier and the joke is that many nips still thought it was too hard.
I would recommend starting the game immediatly on hard if you ever play it (the hardest mode need to be unlocked by finishing the game once).

I play them mostly as if they were me and see where my choices fall within, especially on a first playthrough. Seeing my name (or some approximation in the case of "Bob", not doxing myself here you fujos) in dialogue boxes does a lot for me. For repeat playthroughs it depends. If I'm hunting for a full compendium, than the MC is just a flesh automaton animated by neural transmitters as I focus on demon unlocks/alignment I missed (a peer into an alternate self where I decided to drink Law's koolaid or be the ultimate cringe). Not that I recall, the demon unlocks are just from clearing the game regardless of route. The one thing I do recommend is that you make sure you handle Twisted Tokyo before you're done because that's where the Fiends are at (dungeon blows and sucks simultaneously but at least it isn't 1/256 odds again).

It's good and I liked it. I wouldn't call it more than good though even if it had everything I enjoyed from Raidou 2 and more. The reason why I say so is because while the graphics look nice and more saturdated, a lot of demon models do not and the different artstyles are especially blatant this time around.
Raidou on PS2 was peculiar because it had some demon designs that were re-textured (and, well, had to have some polygons shaved off of them) to look different, like Legion and Beelzebub being made of bones, and even ones that do not look different have minor changes, like Thor's cracked horns.
The Remaster does away with this, which is most likely done to save time and to homogenize series' designs, but I think it sucks, it's a missed opportunity and besides the demon models are a mixed bag: SMTV/V imports look like they are made of clear plastic and P5 imports look straight up like toys (surprisingly Beelzebub looks fine).

Most people who call the Remaster bad on here did not play it and do not know how the story changes are handled: most of them sound retarded out of context but I played it and they actually made sense and aren't badly placed, though I understand if the guys who originally brought these changes up on Xitter or whatever disliked them, because said changes contribute to the Remaster having a much more upbeat vibe akin to Raidou 2's. The final boss and Raido are much more souped up characters in the Remaster and the japanese dub is great. I don't have much space left to talk about gameplay... it's much more fun than the first game's and it's more in line with Raidou 2's. The gun stunlocks demons but it lacks its old oomph and now Raidou can use magic skills which are fine very early on but they are easily surclassed by busted shit like MAG recharge (fun) and Zeal.

Anyway, you can pirate it and see it for yourself, it's pretty easy to do so.

I usually come up with a character personality and try to stick to it. I try to divorce character morality from my own and act out what I think the person I came up with or that is hinted at by NPC interactions would do.
For Strange Journey, I made Doom Guy a no-nonsense, consummately professional soldier and operative who wasn't afraid to shoulder inordinate amounts of work to complete the mission. If a task was given, he'd complete it. Even after the apparent betrayal by the committee back on Earth, he was still in it to get his comrades home. He was also a gun aficionado with a near-fetishistic affinity for maintenance.
Coming up with and sticking to a character tends to greatly enhance the experience for me, so I try to do something different in each game. If a personality for the MC is hinted at, then I usually try to incorporate it in my interpretation.

1 is a reremake while the other one is an enhanced rerelease.
They're both "better" than their older versions.
VV is an improvement over V. Exact same story with 1 extra route, extra quests, older DLC included by default, magatsuhi rails for easier traversal and so on.
P3R is better than FES for the most part. Better visuals, better portrait sprites, better Mementos (and this matters because you spend a good chunk of the game in there, specially if you want to farm the best equipments or jewels to exchange and such), higher quality audio (though arguably worse OST since the new singer hired for the remixes is inferior than Yumi Kawamura).

The only thing FES has going over P3R are the animated cutscenes that you only watch once and never again and last like 5 seconds each.
They're better designed than P3R's in-engine recreations, no doubt about it, but hardly a dealbreaker.

If you just intend to do 1 single playthrough then don't bother with CoC, go with CoV.
Playing CoC gives you context as to what certain characters are doing at some points of the story, but that's pretty much it, it doesn't have a lot of value if you don't care about the experience itself (how the story goes compared to CoV's or what actions the characters take and shit.)

If you want to hunt the achievements then yeah, maybe going full CoC and then switching to CoV is a good idea so you can focus on rushing to The Empyrean after you get your first CoC clear (because the ending lock happens there, everything that comes before is exactly the same in all routes as far as I remember) and then move on to CoV once you're done.

I don't know how to feel about both SMT IVA ending. Bonds has that bittersweet neutral bias that yeah good job you stopped gods and demons from fucking shit up.....until god will come back. Massacre is still the same where great you created a new universe where maybe things won't end up the same but it probably will be.

God I really hate SMT cyclical nature. I get you can't have a W but it just feels like every single ending since SMT1 is just "peace.....for now."

All in all, this game still sticks out as my favorite mainline. I think it sorta drops off near the end but that's almost all SMT except 3. Fun cast, addicting gameplay with problem the only SMT with full unga bunga disgaea like post game (although twisted tokyo being just one big domain is such a fucking miss. hate the domain look). best soundtrack in the series. Pacing is a little wonky but it's significantly better than 4. I'd probably put it as 4A > SJ = 3 (it's neck and neck which one I like more. Maybe SJ but 3 black sheep factor and how unique it is really makes me appreciate it more) 4 => 1 > 2. I love 2 as well but it felt too ambitious for the package it's in much like 4.

After destroying the imperial encampment we linked up with the rest of the gang before the token nerd decided to do a terrorism. I thought he got framed or some shit but no, he was actually willing to blow up a Mako- I mean Perpetual Generator with President Shinra- i mean Head Councilman Ben-Shoah still inside along with several innocent civies if he didn't get his answers. I wish SMT games had significantly more route deviation. I get WHY they do it but having each playthrough essentially be the same except for the last 5-10% is so shitty. The UI looks worse and is slower. The points system compared to ranks makes the true route a bitch. There are forced switches which costs Psi points to switch there and back, with the higher the level you get a person the less the cost is. Either way it's a forced 2k at the min if you grind with a character that got nerfed to make them at 100% to unlock their ranged attack, if not than it's another 2-3k. Another is the ranged attacks being locked behind 100% leveling up in the PS2 version, where the Dreamcast has no BS outside ranged attacks costing HP. It makes ranged attacks much better to use with real risk behind them.

i can make an educated guess that it has to do with the ram and event flags. pretty much every event has some kind of flag tied to it to make it work that once completed is stored in the ram. i can assume "ng+" events can only be accessed with certain flags set like "have a save after beating the boss before the final one."
but i don't know what specifically sets off ng+ or if multiple flags are involved.

in if... there's also a flag tied to progressing at the beginning that you can miss that softlocks you.
if you somehow save sato before talking to ryuichi and akiko in the storage room, you can't talk to astral body hazama because talking to ryuichi and akiko sets a flag necessary for making astral body hazama appear but they're gonele after saving sato.

Modern SMT protagonists are all about unga bunga. Paraselene Blur does more damage than any of the other Nahobino skills but it's pretty inconsistent and requires you to be targeted so you can evade and be able to use it. It's also light instead of almighty which limits what you can use it on.

Once you're done with the original duology, you could give the Remaster a shot to compare them directly (but only if the Remaster is on sale or you can pirate it because it's kinda expensive, but that's up to you.) The reason Raidou is so unique is because there aren't a ton of games that take advantage of 1930s Japan as a setting that I'm aware of, there's Sakura Wars and that new game coming out from RGG Studio and that's kinda it. Early Showa/late Taisho era is super interesting because of how fast the country was developing and Westernizing. No wonder so many people were disgusted when Yamai said he wanted Raidou 3 to take place in a modern era lol
