WTF happened here? If I were to guess, they baked the music on to redbook audio tracks in the Saturn release, but used the SNES-like chip on Playstation.

Is there even a game that was released on both the Saturn and the PS1 that was better on the former that wasn't a 2D fighting game?

Back then, the lead platform was almost always better because architectures were so different. Silhouette Mirage. Not 2D, really, but Thunderforce V is missing effects on PS1 as well. Mega Man 8, too. Like wavy-rastery kind of effects in the background. Very few examples because, yknow, market failure.

Powerslave has less geometry on PS1 despite it being the superior polygonal system; probably just couldn't redo certain parts well with their 1996 rushed dev skill. I think Tomb Raider has a part or two with less detail, but the PS1 version makes up for it in other ways. Again, all just porting/inexperienced+rushed 1996 problems really. Very few cases of the PS1 actually being unable to do it, memory limits aside. Raster warping shit was a bit harder on its 3D architecture but I bet they could have approximated it.

Well yeah they made Laura Croft's model for absolute taters and standards were lower. Tomb Raider had to account for a dynamic camera free roaming too, but yeah, PS1 could just throw a lot more polygons around in general.

Generally, Sat vs PS1 in the 2D dept is really overstated. There were moments where Sat's memory and true 2D architecture helped but PS1 could approximate and even surpass it in some ways. Most of the PS1 btfo games were memcart enhanced, anyway. Princess Crown is like the one argument, but I bet effort and autism could get it on PS1 with few compromises.

You bet on the wrong horse sometimes. Lot of devs were probably true Sega believers at first, or Sega heavily incentivized or paid them to pad out the library, but Saturn's shit tech and the market made them jump ship pretty quickly. So you have a smattering of early games that are a tiny bit better or have their intended look on Saturn.

how are AMD and Incel GPU's at emulation, PCSX2 in particular? in my place NVIDIA is extremely overpriced and so is AMD kind of. truth be told it's all GPU's that are overpriced but NVIDIA is the worst offender. Vulkan just simply doesn't work without issues on anything amd/intel if you are using windows.
Less amd/intel problem and more emudevs being retarded in handling driver calls, but that is a tale for a different time.
Pcsx2 opengl support is limited with amd, directx 11/12 or whatever they are using is not on the same level even though it has better performance.
Also, forget about ever using parallel-gs if they ever implement it.
I guess if you don't mind gramedrops and slight graphical glitches you could get away with amd.
Intel on the other hand is not properly supported by any emu.

General MIDI modules are can be replicated well enough with Coolsoft's VirtualMIDISynth and soundfonts. You set it as the default MIDI device and there you go. All those machines do is play back samples, they aren't doing analog synth shit like OPL2/3 which requires a lower level approach to get right. I guess there's something to emulating them at the chip level and routing MIDI software to it and having the reverb and EQ just right, but it's such little juice for the squeeze.

hate how this looks so much it's unreal
Been playing through the Ace Attorney games on the NDS recently. Even though I don't play much NDS stuff, I couldn't help but notice how oversaturated some of the colors looked.
According to this thread:
https://forums.libretro.com/t/real-gba-and-ds-phat-colors/1540/190, the screens on the NDS are just as shitty as the ones on the GBA.
With the shader, the wood in the background is finally brown rather than piss yellow. Also skintones and other scenes look way more natural too with this shader.
I haven't played the HD release, but from looking at some screenshots, it looks to me that they just took the raw assets and never even bothered with how the colors are supposed to look. The redrawn art looks jarring anyway.

I could see it being justified for some games, such as all those SNES ports that were made overly bright compared to their original color palette, or for garish shit like Castlevania HoD, which was an overcorrection due to all the criticism CotM got for being too dark on the original GBA. Even then, I'd much rather have a patch that fixes or tones down the colors rather than these shaders.

People love parroting this but it's clearly not the case. They upscaled and drew over the low fidelity assets with no regards for how it would end up looking like. That's why all the lines have the same thickness and the shading is terrible.

The metal L-tek ones from iamat.com are fantastic. Mine's still going and I've been using it often for years. I have an older revision that needs a "coin mod" for a little extra sensitivity, and the poll rate isn't 1000hz, but the newer ones have those issues fixed up. If mine somehow shat out I'd buy another one no question, but I don't foresee that happening soon.
Plastic/floppy ones are "you didn't play the game" tier. The foam ones vary a lot in quality and they'll all fail you eventually, had torn/failing sensors in all of them of the years. I'd say they're just good enough to decide if the game's for you, though. They also move around like a motherfucker. Of those, the Dancepadmania ones are okay; just know they are disposable. All the generic metal/solid ones you see on eBay and other sites for ~$100 are terrible, absolutely do not buy one. They're worse to use than foam ones and you'll have one hell of a paperweight/pain-in-the-ass return to show for it.

Actually played it for a minute or two, couldn't shake the slop chills even though I think this is the best filter of its kind. CRT shading and scanlines are just the way to go for 240p content. You will just never convince yourself that "whoa, it's like this 32 pixel sprite is really HD..." no matter how good the algo is.
>>537467451
NP. I know the sticker's a shock, but if one really enjoys the game it's one of the best purchases they can make. The 'prime' one isn't really necessary, so you can save a few bucks there. It has start/back functionality but you'll generally want a keyboard nearby to navigate Stepmania menus anyway.

I dunno if there's a maintained fork, but the latest official version works as well as it needs to and it's a decent, low-latency way to access all the official songs and some decent user content packs in one playlist. It's fairly customizable too. Granted, you can't get it to look like PS1-era/1st gen DDR and how insane that was. Those run at 30fps and generally aren't great outside of nostalgia/novelty though.

DDR emulation's generally not recommended unless you can really file down the latency and have a decent VRR capable display or turn off vsync. You generally want to turn off vsync for Stepmania too, if you don't have VRR. The tearing's not really noticeable in practice and makes the game a lot more playable. Stepmania has a decent sound calibrator too. As the game doesn't rely on "keysounds" like Beatmania or Rockband, Stepamania can fake decent input sync really well.

This patch has the added bonus of fixing the common emu issues. I can only speculate as a no-code user-pleb, but I think it's one of those "by trying to do it right, but only getting it 98% right, the problem presents itself" things. Geargrafx and Magic-Engine probably go about things a more potato-friendly, hackier way that this particular game likes more. Or maybe several emus copy the way Mednafen does it, or vice versa.

It's crazy to me how many people are genuinely using ChatGPT to do their thinking for them. It's one thing to use it as a tool to assist in certain tasks. Keyword ASSIST. It automates a lot of the drudgery, and that's great, but you still need to actually check and proofread the output and see that everything's above board, because the thing is not actually sentient and doesn't know anything. Relying on it to give you actual proper answers and taking them at face value like it's a goddamn oracle is asinine.

It's actually a relatively common thing with emudevs. Many of them don't enjoy frontend coding, as that has little to do with actual emulation of the system, which is what they actually care about. Whether it's easier or not is probably irrelevant to them.

Most emus I've used have had front ends, decent ones even. This precedent was set in the 90s. Mupen and Mednafen are the only real standouts I can think of. MAME, perhaps, but its had UI forks since the 90s and even the official one has a half-assed front end.

Mupen at least has a couple of competent 3rd-party frontends, and the devs behind them contribute toward upstream as well. I think the issue with Mednafen is that it's entirely a one-person operation with no public-facing repository. There are 3rd-party frontends for it as well, like Mednaffe, but they're basically launchers passing command line parameters.

I think you're misunderstanding this. Read the thread in my first post. The DS Phat is closer to the AGS 001, while the DS Lite is closer to the AGS 101.
Both the AGS 101 and DS Lite have a color gamut closer to SRGB, hence why they look oversaturated on some of the earlier games.
The AGS 001 and DS Phat have a much smaller color gamut compared to the former and are front lit.
The third in pic is DS Phat and the fourth one is the DS Lite.
Besides, the original game came out years before the AGS 101 model released.
As for the boxart, and I could be wrong here, but those screenshots could be from in-house emulators or direct captures where color correction would probably take more effort for simple boxart.

Protip: Scale up GBA games by the same factor you would upscale 240p content on your display. GBA sprite size was developed to be about the same as SNES games, and all the SNES conversions are cropped without any changes to sprite size. Meaning the sprites are meant to appear at the same size on your screen as they do on the SNES. This makes the games a lot easier on the eyes than blowing them up to fit your full screen size, kind of like adjusting an FOV slider depending on how close you are to your monitor. It also puts the console into perspective more as a superpowered SNES.

That's just how some disc games work. They had to install data on the HDD to speed things up. Some games allow you to skip that though, and considering this is emulation, there's no reason not to when given the option.

You're using that software for Blu-ray discs and their images? If so, playback can be a nightmare. Only recent versions of VLC, Kodi, and some other proprietary media players are reliable for this. Some discs have Java menus that are incompatible with VLC.
For example, "Welcome to PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Network" one, which you can see in this video:
https://youtu.be/F0Z5Fs9ch44?t=946
You can find that specific disc image in the Redump BD-Video collection (Welcome to PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Network (USA);

Thomas promotional DVD and that guy's Simpsons disc works. Of course I need to know if the image has the encryption ripped or intact too.
Installed PCSX2 and having a blast. I never owned a PS2 as a kid, but I spent way too many hours playing GT1 and GT2, so now I'm going to finally play through GT3 and GT4. GT3 seems like a downgrade from GT2 so far in some ways, I liked how detailed the different car manufacturer shops and tuning workshops were, GT3 has just this one boring menu from which you can do it all. PCSX2 seems like a nice emulator, I pulled the latest git version and compiled it myself (gentoo package manager did that, I only configured it to use master branch).

Can we get some A's in the chat?
As someone who is a casual user of emulation (I didn't even know what bilinear filtering was until I went through multiple games) could someone please explain integer scaling a bit better to me? From my understanding it stays to multiples of the original resolution and simply increases the amount of pixels in a way that upscales games seamlessly so they look fine at higher resolutions and otherwise changes nothing about them.
I've been playing Mario and Luigi on my RG34XX and noticed at 3x scaling it seems to be less sharp than native resolution. I've played other GBA games on this thing and never noticed this problem at all, but with Mario and Luigi if I downscale my integer scaled screenshots to the native resolution it looks blurrier than actual native resolution screenshots. The top is native, the middle is integer scaled 3x and then manually downscaled to 160p, and the bottom is integer scaled 3x with sharp-shimmerless and then manually downscaled to 160p. Sharp-shimmerless seems to have made it slightly less blurry than just 3x on its own but it's still nothing close to native. Just look at the text.
Is this just what happens with integer scaling or am I messing something up?
>>537881256
Probably something to do with filtering rather than the integer scaling? You're probably using a bilinear interpolation filter.

I only used sharp-shimmerless to compare to no shaders at all and see if it did anything and it does seem to make it less blurry but it's still blurry unlike native resolution. I was under the impression that when integer scaling it shouldn't be blurring like this and just be essentially native scaled up pixel-wise.

>>537881256
Okay so your screen's 740x480? You do not want to combine integer scaling with bilinear filtering OR a shader. You should not be using shaders at all at such a low resolution, they will fuck up the image. They are meant to sharpen the image on an HD screen. GBA at 3x integer scaling (RA should automatically use this multiplier) -- no shaders, no bilinear -- should be a perfect fit for your handheld's screen.

The RG34XX is 720x480 and 4:3 so it's a native 3x scale. The issue here is that the actual visual I am getting does not visually look as crisp as it should be and that can be seen from my image comparison there since the 3x integer scaled images should look identical to the native image when you drop it down since nothing's changed.

Does it...? PS1 games aren't really known for their slowdown regarding 2D games, just less effects and unique assets onscreen due to its low memory and not-really-2D. Plus it was developed on their first. I would bet it was developed for SNES first. It's hardly a game that pushes either system. I simply don't believe you.

IIRC the biggest difference and biggest plus for the PS2 version is that the field outside is open and lets you fly and land everywhere. Biggest plus for GC and Xbox is modern manual camera and more NPCs/ghosts at night/enemy types? There are many smaller level design differences that are more subjective but usually imo in favor of PS2. But then again IIRC PS2 bosses are way bigger damage sponges which can suck. It's constantly one version doing something better and then something worse so just pick the one that looks better to you

There is some but they're all really low profile games.
A bunch of European games and a liter of edge cases, the rest are the known 2D ones (Shmup and Fighting), i don't remember if any of the arcade games made for the titan board have Playstation versions but if they do the Saturn will always be the best one since the titan Board is a supped up Saturn.
The 2d ones also have some exceptions here and there where the Playstation version is better.
The Battle of the Ports series on the Retrocore channel sometimes highlight those games.

I guess I find the competition/fanboying kind of stupid. It's been going downhill fast since the site went down. Moderation was perhaps overzelous before, but now it's close to non-existent, and it's full of low-quality bait threads, barely disguised 7th-gen threads, and frog OP threads, which used to be deleted on sight. RetroShart's video filters aren't working on my machine. I play on a 1080p display and have come to terms with the fact that crt-royale-like shaders look terrible at this resolution. The ossc scanline shader does the job, but I'd love to add Blargg's component. MESEN and MESEN-S have Blargg's built-in, but I can't access "settings > video filter" in any emulator, which is really frustrating.
I did some research, and it seems like it might not work with 16- and 32-bit color ranges or something like that. I don’t really get it. Why does RetroArch have to overcomplicate things? Sigh.
Has anyone else dealt with this frustrating problem? Any tips on how to troubleshoot it? Has anyone experienced a similar situation and knows the solution?

It could be that pre-applying blarg in your core settings is raising the resolution of the content before the general video filter is applied, making the video filter less effective.

You may also be able to get the look you want through other shaders. There's a million of them. Just because the yuge CRT shaders like royale don't work at 1080p doesn't mean you can't apply other shaders in other folders to get what you want. This may be more effective than video filters. Also, keep in mind you can prepend/append shaders to combine multiple.
I also find GeomDeluxe to be a safe bet at 1080p. Here's a preset just for you, anon. Place in /shaders/ and make sure slang shaders are updated

I can only speculate as a novice midwit who doesn't code, but it would seem Vulkan demands more specific coding and it seems like even today support for it (esp on slightly older cards) is spotty and the features and drivers fluctuate. The OGL code's already written and works on all cards from the 2000s up. No real point in using it on next-gen emus though.

I was playing X4 earlier, set it to 2x and it worked like it did on the bottom - the window wrapped itself around the image no hassle. Booted it up again without changing anything and now 2x looks like it does on the top. The actual game is the same 640x480 image but it's just added these black bars to the side. No more crtemudrivers and poverty AMD cards for me. GroovyMister sounds cash as fuck, too.
Not trying to meme, but what the fuck is going on with RPCS3 lately? I swear the emulator's compatibility and stability just kept tanking with each passing month earlier this year with games suddenly no longer working at all or reverted back to having issues that were previously resolved (like Sonic 06 working with a simple patch). Now it doesn't even look like anyone is working on the emulator anymore and are just leaving it to rot.
Is there a specific revision of RPCS3 that's "golden" before everything went to shit? I'm genuinely curious as I actually liked where this emulator was going a while ago. I just want to be able to run the fucking games at least.

Some anon was waffling on about how this "reset" screen makes it "obvious" an emulator is being used. I'm a bit hung up on what he meant, since a soft reset should work fine. Perhaps he meant that accessing an emu's menu ruins the "aesthetic" or something, but I'm still testing X-Men for the Genesis myself. It doesn't seem like a problematic game to emulate among the likes of Earthion.

Thought I'd make my own shader comparison Excuse the shit quality. All images use 4x downsampled resolution + PGXP.
1. No shader
2. crt-guest-advanced, no changes
3. crt-guest-advanced-ntsc, no changes (defaults to composite output)
4. crt-guest-advanced-ntsc, modified (all composite artifacts and color bleed removed, still blends dithering, essentially "super" composite)
5. crt-guest-advanced-ntsc, further modified (all of the above + adaptive sharpness, about as sharp as you can get while still blending dithering)

Yeah, 2 is essentially RGB output on a CRT, meaning it is very sharp and vibrant with no compromises, but doesn't blend dithering, whereas 5 is almost as sharp but still blends dithering.
