Hello all. I’m a boomer who hasn’t played FO franchise since FO4 came out. Figured I’d get back into NV with mods given new season of the TV show coming up.

So is Project Nevada still the gold standard for gameplay overhauls? Best version of ENB? I feel like I remember “Rudy’s” being the top preset back in the day. Also any must-have quest mods? Got Russell and the whole bounties series loaded up from someguy2k but that’s about it.

Everyone spits at project nevada now because almost all of its features are now done better, cleaner and with more stability spread across a bunch of other mods. If you like it though, go ahead and use it. I recommend Solid Project. I wouldn't bother with enb, but if you must, use anything made after ~2021 or so. As for quests or total conversions, I'd rec TTW (FO3 in the new vegas engine), Frontier and new california. They're all deeply flawed mods, but technically very impressive and fun enough to be worth playing. If you play Frontier, make sure to play the original release version from archive.org for the true experience.

If you like the someguy series you'll probably like th3overseer's mods, which start to pick up in quality during his third mod in the series, the north road. his second mod eliza has some interesting stuff but it's easy to fuck up the buggy quest progression and lock yourself out of the more interesting content which has nothing to do with the character eliza. But they're all connected and stuff you do sometimes has effects in the subsequent mods, just like with the bounties series iirc. His last two mods, depths of depravity and the high desert are probably his most engaging

if you're looking for story stuff, autumn leaves is a classic.
for some exploration and story, zion trail is one of my favorites. garden of ethan is also top-tier with some great presentation and interactivity. into the deep is also pretty good. the world we knew is visually impressive, especially if you like vaults.

for puzzles and exploration, tales from the burning sands. i would also recommend his fallout 3 mod series if you end up liking his style because he does have a bunch of fun mechanics there. He has a mod about a dream world and it's honestly peak fallout modding to me.

Yeah. The worst part about the mod's design philosophy from a gameplay pov is how masturbatory it all is. You only really have one way to play it, which is being enslaved by some legion faggot who forces you to do his bitch work because the mod is hard coded to force you into being enslaved by him even though if you turn off essential actors it isnt unreasonable to be able to just fight your way through his retarded ambush. There's all sorts of tribes out here. Blind Dogs, Green Feet, Dust Devils. According to this journal, relations are breaking down and they're going to war with each other. Interestingly, there's a note about some Vault dwellers. They were trading with one of the tribes. And the lizard men are called 'tunnelers'. I haven't seen a single tunnel, but I guess that's where they breed before heading out to the surface to kill everything. I'm getting close to civilization now, but there's a boatload of feral ghouls in my way. There's always something in my way.

I think urban environments are beautiful. Fallout 3 has a great atmosphere and aesthetic. The pitt is awesome. One of my fave post apoc books, pic related, has a sequence where survivors in a nuked nyc are trying to escape, and it makes good use of the subway and tunnels. It's just cool.
Swampy bog areas and islands are also fun-- point lookout, far harbor.
Foresty areas have potential too depending on what you put in them. Neoscavenger was interesting. 70% forest. 20% cities. 10% agent orange swamp. There's a native tribe, old military installations, weird cryptid shit, and a megacity. It takes place in michigan, something you don't really expect.

Urban environments CAN be really good but you need to spend a SHIT LOAD of time and care on them. You need to be able to give people that Urbex feel and the only way to really do that it so make the VAST majority of the dilapidated urban buildings actually explorable. FO4 failed miserably on this front, giving us this big Boston city to walk around in but 99% of the buildings are boarded up and you can't go inside them at all. It's one of those settings where you either go all-in and make a masterpiece with a shit load of effort or don't even try to do it in the first place, otherwise it'll just be disappointing.

Yeaaah 100%. I don't think there are many instances where I'm actually pleased by urban environments in terms of gameplay because a lott of it isn't accessible. Depending on the format of the game, I can do with just like my imagination, but in first person I would like to be able to access as much as possible. When I first played fallout 4 I was always really excited to see a door I could actualyl open, but yeah most of it isn't accessible. It's a shame but yeah probably stupid difficult to pull off well. Maybe urban environments in fallout really are just destined to be the skyline background you see in the distance and imagine cool shit about lol.

New Vegas Bounties is so fucking good even if the VA is sometimes done with a $5 mic.
Shame that the cutscene/sequence in the third one gets bugged a lot but otherwise it's a really great series of quest mods.

Anyone else kind of wish that FO4's Raiders got proper groups somewhat akin to how Nuka-World gave each of its unique identities (I know it'd be almost certainly a purely cosmetic thing but still). It's weird that the Forged are their own thing and have this identity around the smelter and Flamers but there's not a unique name given for gangs like Bosco's, Sinjin's, Sully's & Red's among others.

Gunners and Forged are pretty distinct groups, much more different in flavor than Nuka raiders. The rest are just random highway bandits and psychos. There are seven lesser gangs that are somewhat related to each other and don't use any visual distinction but have named leaders, so the lore is there, given in the loathsome Bethesda "tell don't show" manner as notes and terminals.

If anything, I'd wish for a lot less raiders and a lot more settlements with their own lore and relations, bothered by occasional bandits, most of which don't just mindlessly attack you and feel less 1D.

Yeah I getcha, Nuka-World probably wasn't the best comparison since it leans very much on being stupid. I think it would've just been neat to see Raiders utilize unique armours (not overly specific like what Nuka-World did but just variants on the regular Raider and Metal Armor that reflect their environments and the materials they'd have access to).

Also yeah I definitely agree that more settlements would help, especially if they had a story approach akin to the other games where there's a primary issue that the settlements are trying to resolve (and not some stupid shit like Covenant's synth torture chamber or something as insignificant as finding the family locket for Abernathy Farm, more like an issue akin to fixing the water pump in Necropolis or resolving the conflict between Vault City & Gecko). Then you can have minor quests that more so resemble the regular sort of "find this item", "rescue this person", "kill these creatures/raiders, etc." sort of quests as other minor events.

Would've been cool if they'd had it so there were quests you could get by having unique NPCs arrive at the player settlements, like you kinda see it happen with Ronnie Shaw where once she rocks up to the Castle, you're able to do a quest and get the artillery cannons unlocked, so something like that.

In DUST, without extra mods, tunnelers are almost omniscient and will start running towards you before you can see them lol. It makes some of the starting points incredibly hard because you're stuck in areas close to large groups of them. I have complaints. It requires a lot of mods to de-jeetify the game's visuals like removing the vignette borders, restoring the original game's dynamic lighting features instead of having a static lighting setup everywhere and in every cutscene, removing the coffee stains from the borders when you're sneaking or the jelly stains when you take damage, fixing the bizarre face/headmorphs of the characters to more closely resemble who they're supposed to, etc. and a long time tweaking Engine.ini to not make the game run like total shit.
It still kind of runs like shit though especially when you start it up because it has a blank black loading screen while it compiles shaders with no loading bar and it is incredibly janky if you want to use a controller, you have to fiddle with your PC, Steam, and in-game audio settings to get it to work right. They didn't port over all the stuff from MGS3:SE:S I wanted them to, but they did at least have Snake vs Monkey. It was also based that they used the original voice acting and didn't try to "reimagine" the plot. It was not based when they added a heckin transphobia homophobia straight white male fantasy warning though.
The new UI is shit and the new controls are also shit and I hate them both. You can use the OG UI if you want though, which was nice, and a mostly faithful recreation of the original game's controls and camera.
The mocap is really badly overacted. I don't know how quite to explain it, but everyone moves too theatrically, even more so than Twin Snakes even though this game doesn't have as many nutty action bits like backflipping off of a live missile. It's too exaggerated. If you take it for what it is though, its still fundamentally MGS3, which was really fun to play, so it is at its core a good game. I just wish it were better optimized and was made in FOX Engine.

I think the animations and interactivity would be too much for bethesda. Ideally it would be cool to have to hide your mutations (if possible) with special gear so people don't shoot you or treat you like a freak. Prewar schizophrenia medications work like Rad X and reduce insanity taken. Traits can be taken to negate sanity relief from attacks and kills.

This isn't related necessarily to the stealth boys, but my biggest problem with new vegas vanilla is how it drowns the player in resources, even on very hard. My favorite way to play the game is with modified scarcity, with most loot and shop items being reduced between 5-20% of its vanilla counts. It makes recycling/reloading actually matter as a mechanic and makes it actually feel good to loot stuff you usually wouldn't give a shit about. It also makes cooking feel important and worthwhile too, like making cactus water or homebrewed sunset sarasparilla since you only find one or two in a vending machine now, if you find any. Looting areas like the Vault 34 armory is a big deal because ammo is so scarce instead of it just being somewhere you go for All American.

What I do is I just put away everything beyond what I need. So I only take maybe 3 to 5 stimpaks at any given time and just enough of my best ammo types. Incentivizes a lot of pistol and melee use. I also try to carry only 30 to 40 lbs of weapons weapons that I actually intend to use at all times. Sometimes less. Food becomes more useful and you can't carry as many crazy weapons.

Radaway is rare, I had to go find a doctor to cure the rad poisoning. I've been thinking it's probably better to turn my Radaway and Rad-X into Iodine (I use CAM btw) to get more bang for my buck. I also use sweet's Rad overhaul, which generally increases rad damage from rad sources and makes it damage HP too. 60 seconds of Rad immunity seems more worthwhile than -100 rads and +50 rad res in most cases.
The apachii fo4/skyrim port hair replacer is one of my favorite visual mods to come out of the nexus recently. It's still kind of jank though, as some npc's have hair clipping issues

It's wild how drawn into the world I am. There's a few gripes here an there. Just came into contact with the Legion and wanted to exhaust their dialogue and one random inquisitive question locked me out of agreeing with how they handled the town and forced me into calling them monsters, but all in all I'm completely drawn in. The exploration is great, world building is super interesting, characters are just as interesting, and the gunplay is just satisfying enough.

Getting that feeling you get when you know you are about to play something really good. Also, the enemy variety is a wonderful change of pace coming off just beating Mad Max.

Again it's not even close to New Vegas but I don't think it's as bad as everyone says. But I can't deny that the first impression is completely ruined by the whole intro part with the pre-war world and minutemen.
Imo it would be better if you started the game right away in the cryo pod with the first thing you saw after creating your character being the kidnapping of your son.
And move the encounter with the Minutemen further into the game and closer to Quincy, letting them fight the gunners instead of the raiders which would make much more sense.

Especially with TTW putting it into a superior engine with gameplay and QoL mods it's enjoyable. Add A World of Pain for some extra locations, and the DC Capital Wasteland is a fun place to explore. It has fewer side quests pointing you to a dungeon with map markers, and more actual free form exploration where you can just stumble upon mini-dungeons than NV.

I've got it super stable with no real bugs, it's more that it's got sort of the same thing I've seen in a lot of non-Morrowind total conversion mods where there are clearly more level designers than there were quest designers and such.

Like I went to the glowing sea area in the game and it looked neat. In the distance there is this MASSIVE stadium that ends up being a whole town full of uniquely named ghouls and malfunctioning robots and it's like "Oh, cool! I wonder what whimsy and intrigue this unique town will have".

Whether you became feral or not was traditionally considered to just be up to random chance, but you could improve your chances by limiting your rad intake or generally trying to keep your mind sharp.
It seems like the fix is just a guarantee to not become feral, but you get addicted to it and if you ever go cold turkey and stop taking it completely (in the event you can't get more) you'll go feral almost immediately.

There's some kind of weird glitched build mode you can enter if you're in a teammate's camp.

Honestly it had nothing to do with the story, that was fine, but it was just a fucking miserable DLC to navigate. All the bomb collar and invincible hologram shit got old after the first hour and the dilapidated town maze was just a massive fucking chore. It was getting annoying to the point where I stopped caring about the story entirely until Dean dumped some exposition on me at basically the fucking end of it. Dean's cool though, wish we could bring him out of the DLC. Easily the best companion I've met so far.

The holograms can also be turned off fairly easily with terminals or you can just destroy the projector. They're basically just mobile turrets and were far easier to deal with than the ghosts, aside from the singular segment against the vera hologram where you're forced into stealth.
