I think the main difference is Pokemon like the other media juggernauts has been able to consistently funnel in new generations into their ecosystem, Sonic never was able to do that so it’s relying almost exclusively on fans who never let go.

A ton of kids watch and consume Sonic content made for children you might not care about, like Prime and the movies, and there's always ever growing teenage and young adult fans who stick around. Sonic and Pokémon are very similar in that regard. The major difference is that mainline Sonic games have dwindled in relevance as people become fans of Sonic in a broad generalized way for the entire franchise now, which is actually quite similar to Pokémon fans.

I feel like Pokemon's a bad point of reference due to its competitive scene, which helps with its audience retention and outreach. This is something Sonic doesn't have. Sonic as a franchise is also wildly inconsistent, it radically changed gameplay and tone every few games making it hard to get people into the series. Pokemon evolves it meta, but its base gameplay hasn't really changed since gen 3 over 20 years ago.

Yeah, and both Knuckles and Shadow are the types to not express or show attraction to anyone without some major character trait specifically blocking that.

Knuckles is bad with women, and will respond with rage when flustered. Shadow is cold, distant and dismissive to anyone so he's completely unfazed, likely doesn't recognize flirting anyway, or is suspicious of everyone so much that he'd view it as some kind of trick anyway.

I don't ignore nuance. I just describe the general overview of how these things relate to each other.

The point with Knuckles is that he is this "immovable mountain", to such a degree that any instance of Knuckles not doing that job without any explanation is a direct contradiction of that. Using those as examples of him being more lax in his duties contradicts how Sonic Team supposedly wants him to be characterized in general.

And overall, it becomes another case of Knuckles' character as described flat-out doesn't exist in the actual media he appears in.
